I don’t think there’s a thread for this yet?

I just got back from the cinema and I thoroughly enjoyed it... but there were a few issues. Mainly the first 40–45 minutes which contain a lot of janky set up for the coming battle. The pacing is all over the shop and when you compare the first half to the second half it’s like two different movies. Cinematography & direction are fantastic imo there are some really amazing shots but it’s let down by the writing. Which isn’t a major issue as long as you go into the movie expecting “monsters versus monsters” and not “gripping storyline”.

But in saying that, Kong gets a decent amount of character development and he becomes a character you can sympathise with. And the story behind mechagodzilla is understandable but a tad rushed. I would’ve loved more about the ghidorah skulls and their interconnection but maybe that’s asking too much from a monster movie tongue.gif

They’ve said that the MonsterVerse will continue so long as this film is successful, which I think will happen despite lack of cinema screenings and the flack it’s getting purely for being a WB movie where people are boycotting WB because of the Justice League drama.

I’m happy to see more monster movies tbh, even if it’s just random monster v monsters with janky stories

It absolutely dominated the box office at the weekend, with over $120 million internationally. China was here for it.

It'll be interesting to see what numbers it does in the US. The pandemic box office bar is fairly low, but I'm expecting it to do big things, even with the HBO Max release.

I've not watched this but surely the numbers for this are showing there is a mass demand for cinema? Which is really good going forward and hopefully means the Studios don't wimp out! Doing some impressive numbers in the US above projections. Fingers crossed this means Studios are willing to take a small hit for the longer-term.

Yep. The box office success of this is incredibly good news! It's got 76% on Rotten Tomatoes, but I've really not heard good things at all! I've heard the action is fantastic, but the story is terribly written (again). I'm probably gonna watch it tomorrow or something. I rewatched the first (2014) Godzilla and I still really like it. It feels a bit longer than it actually needs to be, but it's still solid. Their biggest flaw was killing off Bryan Cranston!

'Kong: Skull Island' is my favourite of the 4 in this universe. I find that to be genuinely great!

I saw this at the cinema and I enjoyed. The monster battles were really cool but I’d say overall the film isn’t a completely top tier film.

Also I hadn’t seen all the previous films in the series, I only saw Godzilla in 2014 and when I went to see this I wasn't even sure what it was connected to chronology-wise but I saw the trailer and it looked cool and it’s the only film I really want to see at the moment, other than Cruella which I’ve already seen.

I cried at the end of the film as it was very touching.

I would like to see the other two films in the series I haven’t seen yet though.

I would give the film 7/10 as it has its moments and I like it but it’s not top top tier.
