YolanDa Brown: April Showers, May Showers: Live Sessions
Reviewed by Urbanfairy on 29 July 2013
Yolanda Brown is double MOBO award winner and has also won “Best Jazz” at the UMA’s. This album exemplifies why we are to thank artists like Yolanda Brown for the rebirth and revival of Jazz music. Be sure to keep a look out especially for Yolanda Brown’s signature improvisations, particularly in “Good Morning” which inevitably leads to you finding your hips swaying.

The album as a whole is illuminating and has the power to brighten up any atmosphere. Its endearing melody can radiate all rooms. Whether it is live in Broadway or in your garden, Yolanda Brown is a must listen to. Her music is open to different interpretations and this album shows that there is beauty in ambiguity.

“Yesterday” aptly named, is a nostalgic song which will leave us all reminiscing. It is rather bleak in comparison to other songs in the album such as “Tokyo Sunset”, but conveys how the album is as soothing as it is diverse. “Tokyo Sunset” will take you back in time to the 1920s and conjures an image of the Harlem Renaissance. It’s funky and fresh and definitely creates that “Great Gatsby” atmosphere..Yolanda Brown’s music is also very personal and this song makes you feel right like you’re strolling in the midst of her Jamaican roots.

Regardless of the lack of words in the album, it still manages to have the ability to speak the ineffable. Each song tells its own separate story, yet still manages to blend and interlink; making the album feel like a sort of series. This strengthens the album as an album should not just be a collection of songs, but a selection, and it is clearly visible that care has been taken into this album.

“Without you” will evoke pathos within its listeners as they think about one who they cherish. It plants a vivid feeling of compassion within the listener, whilst creating a theatre like feeling as you engage with the voice of Yolanda Brown. She starts off weak and then finds her inner strength as her self-awareness and ‘individual voice’ gradually increases. As do many of the songs in the album, it serves as a remedy to a sombre atmosphere; relaxing and enticing.

The album has a preternatural force and it is no surprise that Yolanda was honoured to become a Celebrity Ambassador for HRH The Prince of Wales and His Prince’s Trust Charity. This album truly strives to encapsulate the emotions that are dear to one. The omnipotence of her urban music acts as a way to diversify and unite us all.
