Elena: Bashment Ladies
Reviewed by Urbanfairy on 22 Nov 2013
The worst thing for a reviewer to be faced with is the unimaginative, the lazy and the bland. Luckily, this was far from the case when I gave Elena’s ‘Bashment Ladies’ a listen. Elena was born in Jamaica and has lived in the UK for over a decade. She has been able to successfully combine her Jamaican heritage with a UK and USA sound. This all adds up to a refreshing new single.

‘Bashment Ladies’ utilizes dancehall, hip hop and r&b influences. The chorus is a catchy declaration of girls wanting to have fun. The simple bass melody allows for Elena’s fantastic vocals to really shine. Her Jamaican heritage has a strong and unavoidable impact on Elena’s vocals, adding a richness and brevity to the track.

The video suits both Elena and the single perfectly. The vibrant and frenetic video helps to convey the frivolity that makes the single so appealing. The colour palette for the video greatly nods its head to Elena’s Jamaican roots.

‘Bashment Ladies’ is a great single with a strong video. Elena has been able to successfully create an interesting and distinctive sound, which this single truly highlights.
