To anyone who hates mainstream music - this is probably your nightmare.
Nonsensical rapper Will.I.Am teams up with the controversial twerker Miley Cyrus on a track about "feeling yourself"; intriguing. On the surface, this is definitely something to shake your head and think "really?". A year on from topping the charts with former teen icon Britney Spears - Will has moved on to another teen icon with this track that could potentially give him another chart topper. The beat and the style of the track doesn't stray too far from the Jennifer Lopez/Mick Jagger collaboration, 'T.H.E (The Hardest Ever)', which scored him a #3 in 2011. So with the added factor of Cyrus and her current high profile - could we be looking at a future #1?
A continuous deep bassline is played throughout the track which sees all of the credited artists rap over the top - yes, that's right, Miley Cyrus turns her hand to rapping. Sort of. Rhyming 'find me' with 'tiny' is scraping the barrel just a little, but somehow it works and adds an added element of 'cool' to what is already an incredibly chilled track. Add to that some bonkers lyrics from Will.I.Am who compares his touring to that of a "dirty pirate" (rhyming this with Irish, you really couldn't make it up) aswell as raps from Wiz Khalifa and French Montana to complete it and you've got the general gist of the track. I challenge you, like it or hate it, not to be singing "god dammit, god dammit I'm feeling myself" afterwards. I say this from experience of having it in my head for past week or so.
It sounds like a hot mess... it is a hot mess, but a pretty good one at that.
4/5.
