Lucy May: Whirlwind
Reviewed by Urbanfairy on 1 May 2015
As a fully self supported and funded artist, Lucy May is precisely the kind of singer-songwriter that music fans should be throwing their weight behind. Totally independent, May still manages to write full tilt pop songs which would fit snugly into any mainstream playlist alongside the likes of Taylor Swift, complete with the full production values enjoyed by contemporaries with far more backing.

New album, 'Whirlwind', is out on 17th May, boasting 11 country-pop tracks which are by turns infectious and touching - summed up perfectly by the lead single and the follow up. In lead (and title) single 'Whirlwind', Lucy May flexes her upbeat, catchy muscles with a trqack which seeds its own momentum and grows into a huge, catchy chorus. New single 'We Got It' meanwhile, sees the songwriter in a different mood - baring her soul in full romantic love song mode.

Critics might point to a touch of cheese on the part of one or two songs, but when it comes to country-pop music - a genre built on generations of folk and country traditions - there are bound to be moments that are less forward looking than others. More important is the fact the Lucy May's lyrics are clear, modern, and get to the heart of their subject. Country music has always made its way telling tales, and the fact that Lucy May has many to tell that we can all relate to stands her in good stead.
