Australia has certainly produced some much-loved talent over the years. From Kylie Minogue and Delta Goodrem to more recently, The Veronicas.
Now there is one more to add to the list.
Lenka Kripac has certainly experienced it all; from her days as an actress to her time touring and writing with Decoder Ring.
Now as LA based Lenka prepares to hit the UK she chats to Buzzjack about her influences, debut album and reveals what song she is covering on Radio 1's Live Lounge.
Your debut single 'The Show' has just been released here in the UK, what is the song about? It’s about feeling out of control in your life. The metaphor is that your life is this crazy show going on separately to you, but maybe the best thing to do is just sit in the audience and watch!
The video for The Show is amazing. Who came up with the treatment and was it fun to shoot? It was written by the director, Moh Azima, but we developed it together. He wanted it to represent the invisible hand of fate.
You’re performing on BBC Radio 1’s Live Lounge soon, what cover are you going to perform or have you decided yet? We’re going to do Jump In The Pool by Friendly Fires!
You spent several years with Decoder Ring. Do you prefer being a solo artist, and if so why?
I do, I like being the boss! I’ve always had an affinity for girly pop songs and now I get to create my own version of them.
Did you always want to be in this industry?I always wanted to be a performer and a creative type. The industry is just a means to an end.
What influences your music? My own emotions and experiences, social observations, fairytales and nature, 60’s pop.
Do you miss acting or would you ever consider taking a role if it was the right one?I do miss playing characters and getting inside someone’s head, but I won’t take an acting role for a while yet. I don’t want to jeapordise my music right now.
I don’t know if you have seen Lady GaGa’s new video for Paparazzi but it is described as a short film and features some acting scenes. Would you be interested in mixing music and film to create a video like this?Yeah for sure. That’s what I was thinking – I could just do really elaborate videos with lots of different characters in them - that will keep me satisfied!
How would you describe your album? Who will it appeal to?It’s a feel good, up-beat album with a melancholy undertone. It’s a morning record. Hopefully it appeals to all types of people, anyone who needs cheering up.
What will be your next single after The Show? I think it will be Trouble Is A Friend.
Who is your favourite fellow Australian artist/group?Tough question! I really like New Buffalo, Sam Sparro, Dappled Cities. And I’ll throw INXS in there for an historic edge.
Is there anyone out there you would like to collaborate with in the future? Not specifically, but maybe a boy who makes beats – in a fantasy world; Gnarls Barkley or Gorillas or Prince.
Is there one song you’ve heard this year you wished was your song? Can it be an old one? The Way I Feel Inside by The Zombies. We do a cover of it actually.
Top 3 songs of the year?Lisztomania by Phoenix, We are The People by Empire Of The Sun, Single Ladies by Beyonce.
Who is the most famous person you follow on Twitter?Barack Obama
In one word describe:
• The UK -
rainy• Simon Cowell -
powerful• Lady GaGa -
ambitious• Twitter -
addictiveWhats next for Lenka?Loads of touring and promo in Europe and Asia. Hopefully a bit of songwriting and making art and craft, and then I suppose album 2!
What promo have you coming up in the UK?Radio 1 and Radio 2 live performances, some tv things and lots of radio and magazine interviews.
Do you have a message for your fans over on Buzzjack.com who have been looking forward to your release here for some time now?Hello my lovelies, thank you for your support!!! Can’t wait to do some time in the UK!
xxL.
