Fireflies still the number one single and Alicia Keys tops the albums chart
Owl City stays at number one for a third week in the singles chart while Alicia Keys has her first UK number one album

No change at the top of the singles chart and Alicia Keys climbs to number one in the albums chart.

Owl City holds on to the top spot for a very welcome third week, the first three week stay at number one since Taio Cruz last October. Timbaland and Katy Perry climb 14 places to number three and the number two spot is an embarrassment.

For Queen fans this is one of the bleakest weeks since Freddie Mercury died with awful cover versions of two of their best songs entering the chart. Almost inevitably, it’s the worse of the two which finishes as the higher new entry. Jedward will need no introduction to most people. They are the twins who entered a talent contest despite having no evident talent. If they did have any talent it might be possible to have some sympathy for John who gets just one letter of his name in their chosen moniker while Edward gets all of his. It might have been better if he had been called Dave (or Darragh as they’re Irish) thus giving us Dedward. Their demolition job on Under Pressure / Ice Ice Baby looked like challenging Owl City at the start of the week. Thankfully, common sense prevailed and they fell away as the week went on and they finish at number two. Any shrewd publican running a karaoke night would save Jedward until last. After all, their appearance on stage would clear a pub far more effectively than any number of shouts of “Time gentlemen please”.

The other Queen cover also has a karaoke connection in the shape of karaoke as drama conglomerate Glee Cast. Their victim is Somebody To Love which was the first single from A Day At The Races, the follow-up to the classic A Night At The Opera which gave the world Bohemian Rhapsody. The original version made number two in 1976; this new version, for the time being at least, has to settle for number 26.

Glee Cast’s other “song” drops to number four and Alicia Keys’ gorgeous version of Empire State Of Mind climbs another two places to number five.

Kesha and 3Oh!3 combine for Blah Blah Blah, giving both acts their second entry in this week’s top 40 at number 11. Sadly, the song is every bit as irritating as Tik Tok. Marina Diamandis follows the current trend for using a stage name which sounds like a band. In her case, it’s just a play on her name leading to Marina and the Diamonds. She finished second in the BBC’s sound of 2010 list and now has her first hit single with the very catchy Hollywood, a song about many Britons’ obsession with the US, entering (on the day of the yawnfest that is the Superbowl) at number 12.

Calvin Harris enters at number 38 with You Used To Hold Me, a song which sounds exactly like a Calvin Harris song. Lady GaGa’s Telephone (featuring Beyoncé) called in to the top 40 briefly last December. It returns this week at number 39 with the physical release due on 22 February, a date which will see many major physical releases although not from Owl City as that has been cancelled.

Cheryl Cole’s Fight For This Love drops out after 15 weeks while Alexandra Burke’s Bad Boys does the same after 16. Black Eyed Peas are still there though with I Gotta Feeling now up to 32 weeks.

Alicia Keys’ album The Element Of Freedom initially looked like performing fairly modestly. However, it’s proved to be a bit of a slow burner and has climbed to number one this week in a chart run which reads 17-17-23-11-7-8-2-1. This is her fifth studio album (there has also been an Unplugged album) and her first chart-topper. I’ve never been a fan of hers but the singles from this album have been stunning, showcasing a terrific voice. Andre Rieu continues to climb, making it to number two this week and Paolo Nutini drops back to number three. Florence + The Machine also fall two places to number four.

The highest new entry in the albums chart at number five is from Corrine Bailey Rae. The Sea is the follow-up to her highly successful eponymous debut album released in 2006 and marks a return of the singer two years after the death of her husband. Three places behind, at number eight, is Kesha’s debut album Animal.

We’re a week away from Valentine’s Day and that has its customary effect on the albums chart. It’s difficult to imagine someone announcing that the thing they most want on the 14th is a Peter Andre album but it seems there are some strange people about. Perhaps boosted by his latest publicity tour complete with blubbing about how unfair life is, Unconditional Love Songs is a new entry at number nine. There’s also a return at number 28 for Celine Dion’s My Love - Essential Collection which spent ten weeks in the top 40 from November 2008. It is not known how many of these albums were bought by John Terry. Alternatively, they may have been bought by Mrs. Terry who now forces her wayward husband to listen to them on endless repeat whenever he’s at home. George Benson also enters the chart, at number 30, with a Classic Love Songs collection and Marvin Gaye is at 38 with Love Marvin - The Greatest Love Songs Of Marvin Gaye.

In the week when it was announced that the club in which they were formed is to be knocked down and replaced with a hotel and retail complex, Hot Chip have released their new album, One Life Stand. And it enters the chart at number 11.

Journey have a new entry at number 12 with their Greatest Hits album although it would have been more accurate to call it “Greatest Hit And Some Other Songs”. It thus becomes their second highest peaking album behind only Frontiers which reached number six in 1983.

The Courage Of Others is Midlake’s third album but, at number 18, the first to make the chart. Lil Wayne has his second chart album in the shape of Rebirth, this week’s number 24.

Ocean Colour Scene have been releasing albums steadily since 1992 although it was the highly acclaimed follow-up Moseley Shoals in 1996 which propelled them to fame. Saturday, their ninth studio album released in time for their 21st anniversary enters this week at number 35.

The other re-entry is by Taylor Swift whose Fearless album is back in at number 33 following her success at the Grammy awards.
