Ever since Monday’s announcement of David Bowie’s death at the age of 69, his albums and singles have been bought and streamed in large numbers. His latest album Blackstar, released on his birthday last Friday, was already all set to top this week’s chart, but it will now be joined by much of his back catalogue.
In the singles chart, Heroes, which only reached number 24 when it was released in 1977, has proved to be the most popular of his old songs. That looks certain to reach a new peak in this week’s chart, announced on Friday. Based on sales and streams up to 23:59 on Tuesday, it is at number eleven.
Four other Bowie songs are in the top forty in today’s update. Life On Mars? is at number eighteen, Starman is at twenty, Let’s Dance is at number 22 and Space Oddity at 28. Lazarus, the single from his last album, is just outside the top forty.
By the end of Tuesday, Blackstar had sold over 100,000 copies, guaranteeing it the number one spot on Friday. Nine other Bowie albums are in the top forty. Two compilations are the most popular so far. The most recent set, Nothing Has Changed, is at number five, with Best Of 1969-74 at number twelve. A different Best Of collection is at number eighteen.
Of the studio albums, The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars is at number sixteen in Wednesday’s update, one place ahead of Hunky Dory. Aladdin Sane is at number 28, with Low at number 31. His 2013 album The Next Day is at number 32 and Diamond Dogs is at number 40.
