Seven weeks at number one for Drake
Drake's God's Plan tops the singles chart for a seventh week. The Greatest Showman soundtrack spends a ninth week at number one in the albums chart.

The chart-toppers remain unchanged for a seventh week as Drake stays at the top of the singles chart and the Greatest Showman soundtrack still cannot be shifted from the top of the albums chart.

While relatively few people can be persuaded to part with actual money for the dubious privilege of being able to listen to Drake’s latest dirge, God’s Plan, there are still plenty of people listening to it on streaming services. It therefore gets a seventh week at number one without ever being the week’s highest seller.

Rudimental, Jess Glynne, Macklemore and Dan Kaplan remain stuck behind Drake in second place; These Days spends a fifth week at number two. It has been the best-selling song for each of those five weeks making it particularly unlucky.

Dua Lipa’s IDGAF spends a third week at number three after her four weeks at number four. I wonder if she cares. After a stumble last week Portugal. The Man climb back up two places to match their peak of number four with Feel It Still. After entering at number five last week with Friends, Marshmello and Anne-Marie are non-movers this week.

Jahseh Onfroy, known for no good reason as XXXTentacion, had a minor top forty hit last year with Jocelyn Flores. That was the name of the song, not a featured artist. He comes from the Florida town of Plantation which may explain why he has a haircut like a pineapple. He enters at number 26 with a song called Sad! which may, or may not, be a tribute to his president’s tweets.

South Londoner Dave made his top forty debut last year with No Words. Knowing no words would be a serious handicap for anyone playing Hangman, the title of his new single which enters at number 30. Among the tracks from his album to enter the chart last year was one called My 19th Birthday. As it failed to reach the top forty I missed a chance to mention a union card and a wedding coat or, for that matter, the Vietnam War.

Bebe Rexha gets her sixth top forty hit (her first as lead artist) with Meant To Be at number 33. Four of her previous five top forty entries have reached the top ten although only the first, Take Me Home, made it as far as the top five. She is joined by Florida Georgia Line, one of the many featured artists on Hailee Steinfeld’s current hit Let Me Go.

The return to the chart of Florida Georgia Line could have given us two artists named after a railway line in the chart. If Keala Settle’s parents had been able to spell Carlisle correctly, she would have been named after one of the most spectacular railway lines in England.

The featured artist on Dave’s aforementioned No Words was rapper MoStack. This week he gets a hit in his own right as What I Wanna enters at number 37.

Texan singer-songwriter Khalid had two top ten hits as a featured artist last year as well as a lesser hit on his own. He enters this week at number 38 with Love Lies. The song features Normani Hamilton who becomes the first Normani to have a chart hit.

George Ezra’s Paradise climbs eleven places to number nineteen. Sigala and Paloma Faith are also up eleven places, to number 21 with Lullaby. Zedd, Maren Morris and Grey climb thirteen places to number eighteen with The Middle.

There is still no stopping the Greatest Showman soundtrack which gets a ninth week at the top of the albums chart. Its run has now matched the initial run of Ed Sheeran’s ÷ last year.

It is by no means uncommon these days for the list of new entries in the albums chart to be dominated by artists whose career started before many of the acts in the singles chart were born. This week provides a prime example.

The highest new entry comes from UB40 who had their first hit single in 1980. They eventually had seventeen top ten singles (including three number ones) and fifteen top ten albums (two number ones). Their first chart-topping album was Labour Of Love in 1983 which included hit singles Red Red Wine (written by Neil Diamond) and Many Rivers To Cross (penned by Jimmy Cliff) as well as covers of songs by Bob Marley and Isaac Hayes. Further Labour Of Love albums followed in 1989, 1998 and 2010. Now they have added a fifth, A Real Labour Of Love which enters at number two, their highest chart position since Promises And Lies spent seven weeks at number one in 1993.

Ed Sheeran’s ÷ and Dua Lipa’s eponymous album are each down one place, to numbers three and four respectively.

UB40 are one of many bands to have included brothers as members. As with so many other bands (Oasis and The Kinks being just two examples) the relationship between those brothers those brothers has not always been an easy one. However, there are other examples where the relationship has been rather less rocky. One such is Embrace featuring Danny and Richard McNamara from near Brighouse, a town best known for its brass band. They had their first chart success in 1997 and their debut album, The Good Will Out, reached number one the following year. In 2006 they recorded the official England World Cup song; there is no sign of them doing the same this year. They enter at number five with their seventh studio album Love Is A Basic Need. All seven of their studio albums have reached the top ten.

From brothers to step-sisters. Tanya Donelly formed Throwing Muses in 1989 with her step-sister Kim Deal. They went on to form The Breeder while Donelly was also a founder member of the brilliant Belly. Last week they released their first album for ten years, All Nerve. Like UB40 they get their best chart position since 1993, entering at number nine.

Tracey Thorn’s first chart appearance was in 1983 as half of Everything But The Girl alongside her eventual husband Ben Watt. They had two number three singles with a version of I Don’t Want To Talk About It (previously a hit for Rod Stewart) and the wonderful Missing. Thorn had released a solo album before charting with Everything But The Girl and then waited 25 years before releasing another one. That second album, Out Of The Woods, was a minor top forty hit but the next two releases both fell short. Now, after an eleven-year wait, she finally gets a second solo top forty album as Record enters at number fifteen.

Moby had his first hit single in 1991 but didn’t have a major hit album until Play was released in 1999. Even then it was not an instant hit. It entered the chart at number 33 in May before leaving the top forty. It finally returned in January 2000 and topped the chart in April that year, staying there for five weeks. None of his subsequent albums have had anywhere near as much success although the follow-up, 18, did go straight to number one. He enters at number thirty with Everything Was Beautiful And Nothing Hurt.

Even one of this week’s chart debutants is hardly a spring chicken. Alan Titchmarsh, 68, better known as a television gardener and latterly as a novelist, has released an album of music inspired by some of his poems. The music is written by Debbie Wiseman, composer in residence at Classic FM apparently, and performed by the National Symphony Orchestra. The Glorious Garden is a new entry at number 31.

There are some younger artists with new albums in the chart this week. The list is headed by Canadian rapper Tory Lanez whose stage name sounds like the sort of place where Alan Titchmarsh is popular. He enters at number eight with Memories Don’t Die. Featured artists on the album include 50 Cent and Wiz Khalifa but not his countryman Drake. Perhaps the invitation got lost in the post.

It has long been the case that most bands have around four or five members. Record companies have never been too keen on larger band and that is even more true now. It is therefore, a rarity to see a new eight-member band enter the chart. That has happened this week as Superorganism enter at number 25 with their debut album, also called Superorganism.

Sneakbo, who is just over a month older than Tory Lanez, enters at number twenty with his debut album named after his home district of Brixton. Walsall’s Stone Broken enter at number 37 with Ain’t Always Easy.

First Aid Kit return at number 28 with Ruins.

Worth noting that Normani has had a few chart hits before as part of girlband Fifth Harmony.
