Five weeks on top for Lewis Capaldi, a new album chart-topper for Michael Ball

Your regular Chart-tutor Suedey is busy training up the next generation at the mo, so your substitute teacher is here to let you have a bit of a muckabout instead of learning stuff.

It’s five weeks on top for my third fave singing Capaldi - after the fab 60’s band Traffic member Jim and his great 70’s songs like Eve and It’s All Up To You, and Lewis’ distant cousin Peter who’s in the video, obviously with more time on his hands since the Doctor Who gig. The song comfortably held the top yet again from the bridesmaids Calvin & Rory, 5 weeks unfairly in runner-up spot, despite the Lewis vocal style adopted during his training at the James Arthur School Of Constipated Singing (Est. 2012). The decent Tom Walker reaches a new peak of 3 on his 11th chart-try in the week we lost the wonderful Scott Walker (not related, but worth studying for anyone looking for tips on how to sing dramatically), while the fab Portugal.The.Man-ish Sucker gives The Jonas brothers a new career-best of 4 after a mere 12 years of attempts (they were admittedly toddlers at the time and probably had minimal input creatively). Ariana is meanwhile still feeling a bit bored at 5 as Mabel runs into the track barrier of ACR and takes a tumble.
As the chart show is revealed I’m taking a car trip to Liverpool (hoping to see The Cavern) with Dave. Not the same Dave who’s up to 6 with Burna Boy, though they both are Location-based, I suppose. Highest new entry is in at 7 for Steel Bangelz, who I preferred back inthe 80’s when spelling properly was a thing - Who could forget Manic Monday or Eternal Flame? - but he is these days aka Pahuldip Singh Sandhu, 32-year-old grime/hip-hop act and comfortably outperforms his 2 previous top 50 tracks, with an assist from AJ Tracey who gets his 7th and biggest hit, & MoStack. P!nk is also back up, to 9, with her 22nd top10 in 19 years, that’s a real chart veteran in these 2010’s chartdays. Idris Elba is a multi-talented veteran, though principally an actor these days (and a fab one), but his own material has never charted before. That’s all changed as Boasty goes up to 11, as he guests on a very Sean Paul record, that also lists Wiley & Stefflon Don as joining in on the fun. Steffy is hot at the mo, while Wiley hasn’t troubled the top 40 for a surprising 6 years, 15 years after debuting, and including a chart-topper in 2012: Heatwave. No, I don’t remember it either (checks -ahhh the “put your hands upon my body” song that some in the music industry appear to have taken as a mission-statement).

Khalid & Disclosure climb with the fab Talk to 12, Sigrid ditto to 13 with the catchy Don’t Feel Like Crying, and Marshmello take CHVRCHES into the top 20 at long last at 14. It’s a shame their own track can’t manage that, but he ho better than nothing, hitting 15. Ava Max gets a second top 20 at 18, no longer largely Sweet But Psycho, though namechecking troubled murderer Sid Vicious & equally-troubled victim Nancy Spungen as “So Am I” suggests otherwise.

It’s a whopping week for new entries, as a second one pops in at 19 for American rapper RUSS and UK-rapper Tion Wayne with Keisha & Becky. Not on the record, I clarify, the melody-free booty-worshipping rap ponders the state of the world as a bunch of men stand around a group of women wearing nothing much and focus on the most vital thing about them. Bless. Health warning listen to this at your peril.

Production trio Meduza (featuring Goodboys) get an actual new entry with a non-rap track, it’s a dance track Piece Of Your Heart, and is bliss in comparison to RUSSTion, new at 32. George Ezra has been struggling to go top 40 with Pretty Shining People all week, last week’s 41, and looked like he was in at 36 at one stage. In the event he managed 38 which is still better then his brother has achieved with his terrific Ten Tonnes single.

Over in the albums chart, Michael Ball gets his first solo chart-topper since his debut 1992 self-titled effort, and his 4th in total after two with Alfie Boe. Waiting 27 years is quite patient, and I bet his Mother’s Day set-up timing for Coming Home To You didn’t hurt at all. Last week’s chart-topper Jack Savoretti is down to 2, while The Greatest Showman still gets enough people not bored with it to go up to 3, with Tom Walker down to 4, and George Ezra back up to 5.

It;s back to the 90’s for the next new entries: Sleeper haven’t released an album for 22 years since last charting in 1997, with the last of their 3 top tenners, Pleased To Meet You, their debut Smart in 1995 peaked at 5, like the follow-up, The It Girl. So, it’s a welcome return with The Modern Age at 18. Further behind another 90’s band returns: Mansun at 36 with Six, their 1998 second album now back in special editions.Their debut album, 1997’s Attack Of The Grey Lantern started a run of great singles and four albums which all fizzled out in 2004 with Kleptomania’s failing to break into the Top 100.

The Carpenters RPO revamp is back at 10 after some TV boosting from Richard Carpenter. Other new entries: RV &Headie One at 21 with Drillers xTrappers II. I must have missed the Drillers x Trappers I Mixtape. Critically-acclaimed Jenny Lewis has been releasing albums since 2006 (3 of ‘em) and finally breaks into the top 40 with 4th effort On The Line at 27. Canadian Rapper NAV has some Bad Habits at 26, troubling the UK charts for the first time following North American success in 2018 with his previous top 5 album Reckless

Bonnie Tyler is back some 42 years on from her 1977 debut The World Starts Tonight which peaked at 2. In Sweden. I rather liked Bonnie back in 1976 and onwards, so it’s good to see she’s following up on her 1983 chart-topping Faster Than The Speed Of Night with a 5th charting album, Between The Earth And The Stars, her first since 2013’s post-Eurovision Rocks And Honey managed 52. Singer-Songwriter Lucy Rose gets a  4th album chart position with No Words Left some 7 years after her debut hit Like I Used To peaked at 13, this time at 38 while 80’s band Motley Crue are back with The Dirt at 32 the soundtrack to the movie biog showing on Netflix. I haven’t seen it, as I couldn’t stand the tacky, cheap 2nd-rate Glamrock 10-years-late U.S. Band who somehow managed to chart 6 albums in the UK charts most recently their 2005 compilation Red, White & Crue.
The film must be good.
