Sheeran and Biebe spend eight weeks at the top.
This week’s commentary comes from popchartfreak. Many thanks to him for standing in.

8 weeks on top for Sheerber and Kylie tops on albums on your Suedehead2 Replacement Bus Service charts rundown. Simon will return in From Suedey With Love, work-stirred but not shaken.

Yes, it’s only 8 weeks on top for Ed Sheeran and Justin Bieber, and I Don’t Care. Honest. I don’t. Just when you thought the 2 noughties-chart-topper dominating popstars had had enough weeks on top with their pleasant ditty, they even go and keep Ed Sheeran himself off the top to boot. Not the first time he’s done that, but at least he can only dominate with 3 tracks, so phew! In at 3 with Khalid, and Beautiful People gives Ed 3 of the top 6 with Cross Me at 6 - Khalid is usually pretty good, and indeed he improves what might have been an otherwise whiney Ed ballad into Khalid’s 15th chart entry, or his 5th top 10, or equal-second-highest charting track behind 2018 chart-topper Eastside. Can’t we just Talk? Well, I can, anyway.

Senorita, with it’s Havana vibes, is also still sounding good at 2, so there’s still hope the previously-chart-topping-soloists duet (as we used to call them in the olden days) Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello can push off the current duet. Rapping up a Stormzy is up to 4 with his Glasto moment, for me his jewel in the Crown even if he insists on singing on it - totally forgiven cos he’s not sounding autotuned, a blessed relief to these ears. At 8 Mabel checks out her 3rd top 10, helped by yours truly buying Mad Love on itunes - no you don’t have to thank me, as I also bought Stormzy, Shawn & Camila too (among others) t’other day. Sigala grabs a 7th top 10, this time with Becky Hill at 9, and I Wish You Well, Bruce, I do. I wouldn’t have bought them all if I didn’t.

Two more new entries set the chart alight as Chris Brown sneaks in at 29, for an incredible 38th top 40 entry. Don’t Check On Me he instructs, presumably cos he hasn’t walloped anyone for a couple of years, being rewarded with other types of hits, this more acoustic effort dragging in Justin Bieber warbling over an equally incredible 38th Top 40. It’s as if they knew - one former fighter collaborating with a wannabe fighter (if you count women and near-pensioners as actual fighting and not bullying). Ink also lends a hand, err he hasn’t had 38 top 40 hits. He’s had an incredible 2 previous, one of them with Chris Brown, t’other with Fifth Harmony (see Camila Cabello). How incestuous! Ignore collaborations, though, and all of them drastically reduce their hit quotia.

At 36, Kygo is back, the man that gifted Tropical House on us was born in Singapore, in 1991. So fair enough, and he’s back for an 8th top 40 hit in 5 years, quite low considering less worthy longer chart-careers, cough, 38 hits, cough, cough. Joining him is Whitney Houston on Higher Love. Eh?! Yes, the late much-troubled singer gets a 31st top 40 hit a decade on from her last Million Dollar Bill. The original Higher Love was a fab 1986 hit for 60’s teen star Steve Winwood, aided by Chaka Khan (uncredited, as was the norm in those days long before you got a career-boosting “feature” for sneezing into a microphone), and Whitney released a bonus cover tagged-onto a Japanese version of her I’m Your Baby Tonight 1990 album. I guess UK Whitney fans don’t have the original cover, and Kygo fans aren’t too fussed about a cut’n’pasted amended updated version.

AJ Tracey is at 16 for the fourth top 20 track of his career, and Ladbroke Grove. Leo Sayer warned us of the traffic problems in Ladbroke Grove back in 1974, on his hit ode to buskers One Man Band - “you can lose your life under a taxi cab” he states “you gotta have eyes in your feet”. Poetry compared to the current waxing lyrical (woo woo) I swear. Facts. Woii oii! One of the better-produced London-related urban records though. Meanwhile at long last young Florida-born Dominic Fike, and his fab Three Nights, at last breaks into the top 20, at 20, long overdue for the catchy 9-weeks yo-yoing grower.

In the bottom 20, Young T & Bugsy manage to buck the trend and go back up to a new chart peak of 22, Strike A Pose! I should mention Aitch is featuring. I preferred his solo stuff outside Steps with Claire. Martin Garrix has some Summer Days good news as it at last breaks into the 30 at 26, helped by Macklemore and Patrick Stump, and the hot sunny weather. I bought it 3 months ago when it was raining a lot and it just didn’t fit the mood!

Meanwhile outside the 30, Mark Ronson’s album release has boosted his chart fortunes a bit, as Find U Again goes up to a new peak of 31, almost equalling the peak of fabulous previous single with Lykke Li, and this time helping Camila Cabello to keep 2 consecutive top 40 chart spots going.

We Step Back In Time as Kylie enters at 1 with her latest hits package, easily outselling the nearest challengers aided and abetted by a great Glastonbury key spot (14 years after she had to cancel due to her battle with cancer - I was in the audience at her last show that year) which boosted her back catalogue on itunes, and all formats except streaming. Streaming not keen on Kylie. No accounting for taste. Anyways it’s Kylie’s 17th top 10, and her 7th Number One following hot on the heels of her Golden studio chart-topper, her first back-to-back’s since her first two debut albums in the late 80’s, and her first hits package to top since 1994.

The Black keys also enter, at 3, with “Let’s Rock” (Quotation marks included), their 5th top-75-charting set spanning 15 years, with the last 4 all now going Top 10, since 2010’s Brothers hit 10, and the previous two El Camino and Turn Blue both peaking at 2. Sadly they’ve never got any higher than 57 in the singles charts, which is rather unfair, albeit not unexpected given the singles chart exclusivity of genres in recent years. Lewis Capaldi drops to 2, despite a Glasto boost, for which Kylie is grateful, and Bruce Springsteen is at 5 despite not even playing at Glasto, which is pretty impressive in itself, as Billie Eilish was and just sneaks past him going back up at 4.

Chris Brown enters at 7 with Indigo. his 6th top 10 in a career going back to 2005’s Chris Brown, which peaked at 29. Previous best was 2012’s chart-topping The Fortune. Hank Marvin, who had already been charting albums solo for 36 years before Chris Brown even started, and is on his 14th with new entry Gold, his 4th top 10 at 9, can beat that with his own records with The Shadows. 29 charting albums starting in 1961, including 4 chart-toppers. That’s nothing though, he also charted in various Cliff Richard & The Shadows albums going back to 1959 and intermittently over the decades after the first flush of Cliff’s success-filled years, and included multiple tracks on various Cliff Hits compilations. Just saying. To a generation of kids he’s the bloke with the guitar in specs who travelled round Europe with Cliff in a double-decker bus in the film Summer Holiday in 1963. I look forward to Chris Brown charting for the future-pensioners in err, 2075. Assuming I’ve just taken the World Record for longest-lived man in history at 117.

The Glasto effect brings back The Killer’s Direct Hits into the top 10 at 7, after a storming show 10 years on from their previous appearance, and 6 years since Direct Hits also peaked at 6 first-time round. Hot Fuss, their 2004 chart-topper also returns to the 40 at 39. I’ve been a fan since day 2 (Somebody Told Me sold me) and it warmed the cockles of the heart of a Pet Shop Boys fan, who guested along with The Smiths/Electronic’s Johnny Marr, Brandon Flowers two fave bands as a record-buying debutant back in the day. Suedey and I were both at The Royal Albert Hall with the charity gig with Johnny and the Pet Shop Boys t’other year. We didn’t wear our tuxedos. Other Glasto album boosts: Stormzy up to 14 and back into the 40 with Gang Signs & Prayer; The Cure Greatest Hits at 19, outdoing it’s 2001 peak of 33, and quite probably their first chart appearance in a decade; Oasis: Time Flies back in at 29 after Liam’s turn-up. Or should that be turnip, after his incessant bad-mouthing you-know-who. Billie Eilish’s EP Don’t Smile At Me also bounces back, while The Beatles ginormous world chart-topper from 2000 “1” is back T 26 due to the Beatles-based film Yesterday. I went to see their first actual film A Hard Day’s Night, aged 6, and Help! aged 7, in Liverpool in a cinema in the Waterloo/Crosby area which is still there, 154 years later. Talk about Yesterday! The Soundtrack, of Beatles covers from Himesh Patel, enters quietly at 40.

Finally, the remaining new entries: No Magic from K-Trap debuts at 33. He’s a drill rapper from Sarf Landon so I’d be willing to bet you can’t buy it in the remaining London HMV’s on old-fashioned CD. I hope I’m wrong, of course. Suedey will be back on normal duties next week, hoping no doubt to have a plethora of exciting new entries to relate in his usual fabulous links-galore style.
