The Weeknd is still at number one
The Weeknd gets an eighth non-consecutive week at number one with Blinding Lights and Dua Lipa spends a second week at the top of the albums chart.

The Weeknd gets an eighth week at number one with Blinding Lights. Dua Lipa remains at the top of the albums chart.

The Weeknd spends another week at the top of the singles chart with the brilliant Blinding Lights. It is the song’s third successive week and the eighth week in total at number one. Of the other songs to have had three separate spells at number one, two have spent longer at the top. Frankie Laine’s I Believe amassed eighteen weeks in 1953, completing its run (that remains a record) before the UK singles chart was a year old. Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee’s Despacito (with more than a little help from Justin Bieber) spent a total of eleven weeks at the top in 2017.

Saint Jhn returns to number two with Roses, swapping places with Drake’s Toosie Slide. If Drake’s latest snoozefest is losing momentum in only its second week in the chart, there is hope for the world.

Dua Lipa has two songs in successive positions for a fifth week in a row, This week, both of them are non-movers with Physical still at number four, one place ahead of Don’t Start Now.

Dua Lipa’s third charting song, Break My Heart, remains in the top ten, at number ten. Lil Mosey’s Blueberry Faygo is the only newcomer in the upper tier, at number nine.

Finding something to write about can be a struggle in a week with very few new entries. The problem is exacerbated when it is difficult to find much information about the songs that have broken into the chart. That brings us to Rover by S1mba featuring DTG at number 23. A quick look at the video tells us that it is about a car rather than a pet dog which is a start. It can also be ascertained that S1mba is a single bloke rather than any sort of collective. Beyond that, things get tricky.

DTG provides even more of a challenge with a Google search unearthing information about an accountancy firm, a digital television service and a printing process. Rover is the first chart hit for both artists. Perhaps there will be more information available if they ever get a second.

The other new entry presents a similar problem. Skechers by Dripreport might suggest an entry in a guide to dry-cleaning companies. It is, however, a song by one of those twenty-first century phenomena, youtube content creator. The one redeeming feature of the song that enters at number 39 is that it is less than two minutes long.

Nathan Dawe and Jaykae climb into the top twenty for the first time, at number sixteen. with Flowers in its tenth week in the top 100. The original version of the song, by Sweet Female Attitude, was in the top ten exactly twenty years ago.

World-renowned tenor Andrea Bocelli is one of many musicians to have streamed a live performance to attempt to keep people entertained. His performance has proved to be one of the most popular. Nathan Dawe missed the opportunity to ask to be allowed to pay tribute to his mother in a duet. They could have called it Nathan Dawe’s Ma.

After four weeks in the bottom quarter of the top forty, Jax Jones and friends jump to number 21 with Tequila.

Dua Lipa spends a second week at the top of the albums chart with Future Nostalgia. It is the first album this year to spend a second successive week at the summit (Lewis Capaldi has spent three separate weeks at number one in 2020) and the first by a British female solo artist to do so since Adele’s 25 in March 2016. The album that stopped Future Nostalgia entering at number one, 5 Seconds Of Summer’s Calm, has left the top forty after just two weeks.

Lewis Capaldi spends yet another week at number two with Divinely Uninspired To A Hellish Extent.

New York band The Strokes were formed in 1998 and released their debut album in 2001. Is This It received widespread critical acclaim but was somehow beaten to number one in the UK by a Slipknot album. Is This It is regularly included in lists of the all-time great albums whereas the Slipknot album has probably been forgotten by most of the people who bought it.

The Strokes’s second album, Room On Fire (2003), also stalled at number two, beaten this time by Dido’s Life For Rent but they finally made it to the top with album number three, First Impressions Of Earth, in 2006. The next two albums also made the top ten and this week they make it six out of six with The New Abnormal at number three. The album has not yet been released on vinyl. With the increasing popularity of vinyl, particularly with fans of bands such as The Strokes, that decision may have kept them off the top of the chart.

The Strokes’ members include Albert Hammond Jr, son of British-born songwriter Albert Hammond. Hammond Sr had a hit of his own with Free Electric Band in 1973 but his main success has been as a writer for other artists. Among his co-writing credits are Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now (Starship), The Air That I Breathe (The Hollies and, indirectly, Radiohead as he is credited as a co-writer of Creep) and One Moment In Time (Whitney Houston) as well as the gloriously silly Little Arrows (Leapy Lee).

Canadian rapper Tory Lanez gets his fifth top twenty (and third top ten) album with The New Toronto 3 at number four. Of New Torontos 1 and 2, there is no trace.

Blaine Johnson’s sole top forty hit, under the name Cadet, came with Advice in 2018. Just a few months later he was killed in a road accident. The song returned to the top forty immediately after his death and it entered the top twenty for the first time. He left behind enough material to put together an album and The Rated Legend was released last Friday. The album, a new entry at number thirteen, includes contributions from Krept (Cadet’s cousin), Chip and Wretch 32.

After five successive top ten albums Laura Marling enters at a relatively lowly number 22. with Songs For Our Daughter, As far as I know, she doesn’t have a daughter. Or a son. The album is currently only available to download or stream, having been released earlier than planned, so it may yet achieve a higher peak.

Selena Gomez’ Rare re-enters at number 26 following the release of a deluxe edition. The other re-entries add to the tally of greatest hits and classic albums in the top forty. George Michael’s Twenty Five is at number 35 and David Bowie’s Legacy is at 39. Oasis’s 1994 debut album Definitely Maybe re-enters at number 38.

Twelve of the top forty albums this week are greatest hits compilations. Eleven of the forty have spent at least one hundred weeks in the top forty.

Spotify is quite useful for getting information on obscure artists if you have it. If you search for DTG and then click on 'about',it gives you a few paragraphs about him.

I must admit I try to avoid those biogs as they tend to be promotional puff. I do look occasionally although not so much for new featured artists.
