A month at the top for Olivia Rodrigo
Olivia Rodrigo remains at the top of the singles chart for a fourth week. Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds have another number one album.

Olivia Rodrigo extends her run at the top of the singles chart to four weeks. Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds top the albums chart with a compilation.

There is still no sign of Olivia Rodrigo relinquishing her grip on the top of the singles chart as Good 4 U finishes well ahead of all rivals to get a fourth week at number one, Rodrigo’s thirteenth week at the summit this year. She is also at number five with Deja Vu while Traitor falls to number eight.

The Weeknd spends a second week at number two with Save Your Tears. Doja Cat and Sza’s Kiss Me More complete an unchanged top three at number three. Ms Cat also has a new entry at number 37 with Need To Know.

Galantis, David Guetta and Little Mix climb to number four with their Heartbreak Anthem, a song England fans will be hoping will apply to Scots later this evening (Friday). Little Mix’s Confetti (something not associated with heartbreak) also stays in the top ten.

Mimi Webb’s Good Without gets its fourth week in the top ten. Next week it may be joined by her new single Dumb Love. For now, that song is at number twelve. One song that has entered the top ten this week is Måneskin’s I Wanna Be Your Slave at number seven. It is something of a cliche to say that nobody would have predicted a particular event but I think it is safe to say that nobody at the start of the year would have predicted a top ten hit for an Italian Eurovision-winning rock band.

Lorde’s last top forty hit was with Green Light in 2017. That title could be used to describe light powered by a renewable energy source which brings us neatly on to her newest hit, Solar Power, a new entry at number seventeen. It is only her fourth top forty hit in a career that started with the chart-topping Royals in 2013. That song remains her only top ten hit to date.

Will Smith’s daughter Willow had her first hit around the time of her tenth birthday in 2010 with the excruciatingly awful Whip My Hair. She has released three albums since then but the British public has largely chosen to ignore them. She now returns to the UK charts after an absence of over a decade with Transparent Soul at number 33. It features Blink 182’s drummer Travis Barker.

For a long time, football-related songs were generally ranked as rubbish, whether they were in support of individual clubs (Blue Is The Colour, Come On You Reds) or national teams (Ally’s Tartan Army, This Time We’ll Get It Right). That started to change in 1990 when New Order recorded England’s song for that year’s World Cup, complete with a rap by John Barnes.

The song that really caught the public’s imagination, though, was 1996’s anthem Three Lions by Baddiel & Skinner and The Lightning Seeds. Instead of being full of the usual false optimism, it was more about the agonies of being an average England fan with it’s “Thirty years of hurt” line.

Such is Three Lions’ popularity that it has been a regular visitor to the chart when football tournaments come around again. It even topped the chart again when England did better than expected at the last World Cup in 2018. Now that the 2020 European Championships are underway (a year late), it is back in the chart at number 22.

There are very few acts (excluding those who have only released one or two albums) who have seen every one of their studio albums top the chart. There are even fewer people who have achieved this with two different bands. One such is Noel Gallagher who went to number one seven times with Oasis (six studio albums and a Greatest Hits set) and then notched up a hat-trick of number ones with High Flying Birds. The latter band has now released a Greatest Hits set of their own, Back The Way We Came - Vol 1, and that too has gone straight to number one to give Gallagher, N an eleventh chart-topping album in total. The second of those Oasis albums, (What’s The Story) Morning Glory, is at number 25 while their Time Flies compilation is at number 22.

Olivia Rodrigo’s Sour stays at number two for a second week. Last week’s number one, Wolf Alice’s Blue Weekend, is at number four.

Rapper Polo G released his debut album The Goat last year. That album reached number six but the follow-up, Hall Of Fame, outperforms it by entering at number three.

Some bands’ choice of name can come back to haunt them, generally because it is seen as a sign of over-inflated egos. American band (with a Scottish singer) Garbage avoided that while still giving journalists plenty of opportunity to have fun with their name. They got off to a fairly low-key start with a few modest hit singles and an album that just missed the top ten before tumbling out of the chart fairly rapidly.

Garbage’s fortunes changed with the release of Stupid Girl, the fourth song from that eponymous debut album. Stupid Girl went into the top ten and the album soon followed. That boost meant that their second album, Garbage 2.0, went straight to number one. The next two albums went into the top ten but 2007’s Absolute (see what they did there?) missed out by one place. Not Your Kind Of People (2012) saw them return to the top ten but their next release, Strange Little Birds (2016) spent its only chart week at number seventeen. Album number seven, No Gods No Masters, is at number five.

Over the last several months we have seen a number of albums which have been released in lockdown conditions. Most of them, though, have not directly addressed the issue with the notable exception of Van Morrison’s anti-lockdown ranting. This week sees another of the exceptions in the shape of Inside (The Songs) by American comic Bo Burnham at number six. The album is based on a show addressing the subject of day-to-day life indoors. The show was a mixture of songs and sketches; as the title suggests, the album just has the songy bits.

Jessie Ware’s fourth album What’s Your Pleasure was nominated for Best British Album in this year’s Brit Awards, losing out to Dua Lipa’s Future Nostalgia. Thanks to the release of a Platinum Pleasure edition with six new tracks, it re-enters this week at number seven.

Not so very long ago, the idea that the lack of a vinyl release would have a significant impact on a new album’s opening chart position would have been considered laughable. How times have changed. Such is the demand for vinyl that there is now a long waiting list that some acts are delaying the release of their album until the vinyl version is available in order to maximise first week sales and benefit from the publicity attached to a high chart position. My commentary on 1 October this year will probably refer to this tactic again, including the fact that some acts are completely open about their release strategy.

In the meantime, we have two examples of albums that have almost certainly suffered from the lack of a vinyl version in the shape of Marina’s Ancient Dreams In A Modern Land and Maroon 5’s Jordi. Marina’s first four albums all reached the top ten but this one limps in at number seventeen.

As mentioned above, 3 Lions was written for the European Championships 25 years ago. One of the stars at that tournament was Jordi Cruyff, son of the Dutch great Johann. His success at that tournament saw him secure a move to Manchester United but he could never really avoid being seen as Cruyff Junior even when he insisted on having Jordi on the back of his shirt rather than Cruyff. Maroon 5’s new album Jordi is not a concept album recounting the career of a former footballer. Instead, it is named after the band's former manager Jordan Feldstein who died in 2017.

The album has been a long time coming. Maroon 5’s last album, Red Pill Blues, was released four years ago and the first single from Jordi came out nearly two years ago. Now that it is here, its chart performance is rather disappointing. It enters at number nineteen and so looks likely to be their first album not to reach the top ten unless the physical release gives it a boost.

Meteora, released in 2003, was Linkin Park’s second studio album and their first UK number one. A new vinyl edition of the album was released last weekend for 2021’s Record Store Day which sees it re-enter at number 30.
