Five weeks at number one for Taylor Swift
Taylor Swift spends a fifth week at number one with Anti-Hero. Dermot Kennedy tops the albums chart.

Taylor Swift still rules the singles chart. Dermot Kennedy gets his second number one album.

There is still no shifting Taylor Swift from the top of the singles chart as Anti-Hero spends a fifth week at number one. The top two remains unchanged once again with Sam Smith and Kim Petras’s Unholy continuing to occupy the runner-up spot.

Megahn Rainor climbs one place to number three with her latest crime against music Made You Look. It swaps places with the far superior Miss You by Oliver Tree and Robin Schulz. Venbee and Goddard are still at number five with Messy In Heaven at the end of a week in which Lionel Messi’s team messed up.

The continuing success of D-Block Europe remains utterly baffling. It might even be said that it is a question that rivals rocket science in its complexity. This week they are back yet again, this time as a featured artist on Rocket Science by a London rapper going by the name of Clavish at number nine.

After four top 100 hits that failed to make the top forty, Meekz makes the broadcast part of the chart for the first time at number 35 with Fresh Out The Bank. He is joined by Dave who gets his 25th top forty hit. A song made by splicing together the good bits from those 25 hits would probably challenge the record for the shortest chart hit ever.

We come, then, to the re-entries. The first of them is rather more to do with the first ever winter FIFA World Cup rather than the upcoming festive season. Yes, it’s time once again to start chanting “It’s coming home, it’s coming home…” to celebrate the return of Baddiel & Skinner and The Lightning Seeds whose 1996 hit Three Lions is back at number twenty.

Naturally Baddiel, Skinner and Broudie have jumped on the chance to record a Christmas version of the song to tie in with the World Cup currently being contested in Qatar. Unlike the previous versions, this version is close to a complete rewrite and includes references to England’s triumph in the women’s European Championships earlier this year. The comedians insisted that Christmas songs and football songs are often rather tacky and, as two negatives make a positive, this new version must be good. The new version is clearly not to be taken too seriously which means that some of the criticisms seem to have missed the point. It is currently unclear whether sales and streams of this version have been combined with all the others. The presence of only one version in the top 100 suggests that they have been combined.

One more vintage Christmas song returns to the top forty. Wham’s Last Christmas, originally a hit in 1984, re-enters at number 23. It joins Mariah Carey’s All I Want For Christmas Is You which climbs to number eighteen.

Also back is Ed Sheeran and Elton John’s number one hit from last year, Merry Christmas. That song is at number 40.

In 2019 singer-songwriter Dermot Kennedy became the first Irish act for two decades to top the UK albums chart with a debut release. His follow-up has now followed it to the top as Sonder enters at number one.

Taylor Swift climbs one place back up to number two with Midnights.

Bruce Springstten may have lost out to Louis Tomloinson in the race for the top of the chart last week, but he has outlasted him in the upper reaches of the chart by some distance. Only The Strong Survive slips one place to number three while Tomlinson’s Faith In The Future crashes to number 25. Drake and 21 Savage are at number five with Her Loss.

We’ve already had the annual Daniel O’Donnell album, now it’s time for the annual Andre Rieu album. The title of this latest set, Silver Bells, offers a strong hint of what buyers and streamers can expect. Sure enough, the track listing includes Santa Claus Is Coming To Town, Jingle Bell Rock and It’s The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year. It enters at number four to give the Dutchman a thirteenth top ten album.

Nickelback’s idea of rock is to have a singer with a voice like gravel. Some people like it, as evidenced by their presence at number eight with Get Rollin, their seventh top ten album.

Meekz enters at number twelve with the mixtape Respect The Come Up. He reached number 32 in 2020 with Can’t Stop Won’t Stop.

David Bowie gets yet another posthumous top forty album, this time with a soundtrack album for the highly-acclaimed biographical film Moonage Dream. The film uses unreleased material from Bowie’s archive and the tracks include a mash-up of The Jean Genie and The Beatles’ Love Me Do as well as live versions of Life On Mars?, All The Young Dudes and Warszawa which inspired the original name for Joy Division, Warsaw. The album is at number twenty, bringing Bowie’s tally up to 68 top forty albums.

Although it didn’t contain any of their best-known hits, Queen’s 1989 album The Miracle still spawned five top forty singles and also gave the band their sixth number one in the albums chart. It has now been granted a massive deluxe edition with a whole load of demo versions, backing tracks and assorted gubbins. It enters at number six.
