Doja Cat is still painting the chart red
Doja Cat's Painting The Town Red remains at number one for a third week. Busted have their first ever number one album.

Doja Cat gets a third week at number one in the singles chart. Busted have their first number one album with a Greatest Hits album with a twist.

Doja Cat continues her run at the top of the singles chart with Paint The Town Red grabbing a third week at number one. Olivia Rodrigo remains at number two with the far superior Vampire.

Kenya Grace jumps onto the top five, at number three, with Strangers. One of the few Kenyan-born UK chart acts, Roger Whittaker died last week at the age of 87. Although well known as a great whistler, the only one of his big hits to have featured his whistling was a version of the Skye Boat Song alongside Des O’Connor.

Casso, Raye and `D-Block Europe are at number four with Prada, one place ahead of Fred Again’s Adore U.

Tate McCrae gets her third top ten hit with Greedy at number eight. She has yet to manage a run of top ten hits in quick succession - the previous ones came in 2020 and 2022.

Drake and SZA are at number ten with Slime You Out. The fact that this typically awful effort from Drake has only just made the top ten may mean that there is hope for civilisation at last. Another Canadian has helped Sza to have a re-entry this week. Snooze is back at number eighteen following the release of a new version with Justin Bieber. The Bieber-less version peaked at number 36.

In Afrobeats news, Burna Boy’s City Boys reaches a new peak of number 22 while there is a new entry (and a chart debut) for Tyla with Water at number 24. The superior PJ Harvey song Water will soon complete a 32nd year outside the chart as the b-side to her debut single Dress.

The Chase & Status revival continues. They enter at number 31 switch Liquor And Cigarettes. They are joined by Arrdee and Cambridge rapper Hedex who reaches the chart for the first time. The superior Oasis song Cigarettes And Alcohol reached number seven in 1994. Chase & Status now have three songs in the top forty.

There are more chart debutants just below Hedex.and co. Zach Bryan and Kacey Musgraves are at number 35 with I Remember Everything while Billy Gillies and Hannah Boleyn are two places higher with DNA (Loving You).

Zara Larsson and David Guetta get a second top forty hit together with On My Love at number 37.

Ulysses S Grant, who became the 19th president of the USA, was born in 1822. Remarkably, three great-great-grandchildren of his were still alive nearly 200 years later. This serves to illustrate the sheer absurdity of the lyrics in Busted’s second hit Year 3000 about meeting a present-day person’s great-great-great-granddaughter. That song, and many others, are included on a new greatest hits set Greatest Hits 2.0. There is also a Guest Features edition with the same songs with added featured artists such as Jonas Brothers, The Vamps, Wheatus and, inevitably, McFly. The album tops the charts this week to give Busted a first number one album.

Olivia Rodrigo’s Sour slips to number two after a week at the top. Rodrigo is also at number five with her debut set Sour. The Weeknd is at number three with The Highlights.

American singer-songwriter Mitski scored a first UK top forty album at the sixth attempt last year with Laurel Hell at number six. Just over eighteen months later, she is back and has achieved an even higher position. The Land Is Inhospitable And So Are We enters at number four.

Unlike some of the other 1990s bands to have had chart success recently, Ash have continued as a unit since that decade meaning why have now been together for over thirty years. They have even maintained the original line-up apart from the addition of a fourth member, Charlotte Hatherley, for a brief period. Their eighth studio album Race The Night keeps up their usual high standard meaning that the five-year wait since their last release has been well rewarded. It enters at number fourteen.

The Pretenders have been going for a good deal longer than Ash; they were formed in 1978, the year after the original Ash trio were born. Unfortunately, they have not been so lucky in maintaining their original line-up with two of those members having died. Their new album Relentless is at number 25.

Mitski was not alone in releasing an album with a longer than average title last week. Thirty Seconds To Mars decided that It’s The End Of The World But It’s A Beautiful Day was a suitable title for their latest set. If anyone tried to dissuade them, they failed. Maybe the absence of a mash-up between REM’s It’s The End Of The World As We Know It and U2’s Beautiful Day is the result of a compromise with their record company. It is a new entry at number twenty.

Corey Taylor, “singer” with Slipknot is at number seventeen with his second solo album CMF2. Other new entries come from Madison Beer (Silence Between Songs, number 28) and Sleepy Hallow (Boy Meets World, 32). The Who are at number eighteen with a re-issue of their 1972 album Who’s Next.
