Beyonce holds on at number one
Beyonce gets a second week at number one. Rod Stewart helps Jools Holland get his first number one album.

Beyonce is still urging Texas to hold ‘em at number one. Rod Stewart and Jools Holland top the albums chart.

After gliding effortlessly to the top of the singles chart last week, Beyonce’s Texas Hold ‘Em gets a second week at number one. Her seven number one singles as a solo artist have now topped the chart for a combined 12 weeks. Her former group Destiny’s Child’s two number one singles each spent seven days at the top.

Teddy Swims floats up to a new peak of number two with Lose Control. Benson Boone’s Beautiful Things slips back to number three. Noah Kahan’s Stick Season climbs back up to number four. DJO climbs six places to number five with End Of Beginning.

SZA enters at number fifteen with Saturn, not one of her best songs. The only other hit song with the word Saturn in the title is Inspiral Carpets’ Saturn 5. That band’s main claim too fame remains the fact that Noel Gallagher once served as a roadie for them. The Saturdays were indirectly named after the ringed planet.

There are a lot of things this country needs. A new hit from Central Cee is not one of them. Nevertheless, that is what we have got. I Will is at number eighteen to give the talentless one a fifteenth top twenty hit. How has that happened?

A song called Kitchen Stove doesn’t exactly make it seem like essential listening. Maybe one day, somebody will record a fantastic song with that very titler, or something equally mundane such as Frying Pan. In the meantime, we have the dross that is Pozer’s Kitchen Stove, a new entry at number 29. There have been several previous hit songs with the word Kitchen in the title, including Jona Lewie’s second best-known hit, but none including the word Stove.

So far in the 2020s, Bryson Tiller has only had hit singles in even years. If he could change that to years where the final two digits are divisible by 97, that would be great. He has a new entry this week with number 31 with Whatever She Wants. If what she most wanted was for Tiller to go away, would he oblige?

Priscilla Hamilton, recording under the moniker Muni Long, enters at number 37 with Made For Me. If you like R&B at its most boringly basic, you may love this. Otherwise, you might be less keen. She came very close to making a top forty debut in 2022 but Hrs And Hrs fell one place short.

Almost every week, an act will make their UK top forty debut, marking a new era for that act. This week, the aptly-named NewEra make their first appearance in the top forty. The Irish production due are at number 40 with Birds In The Sky. Will the follow-up be called Tigers In The Jungle?

Last Dinner Party reach a very welcome new peak with Nothing Matters. It climbs to number sixteen. There is also a new peak for Calvin Harris and Rag ‘n’ Bone Man’s Lovefrs In A Past Life at number thirteen.

Justin Timberlake’s Selfish re-enters at number 39 after a performance on Graham Norton’s show last week. Tonight (Friday), Olly Alexander will be performing Dizzy, the UK’s Eurovision entry for 2024. Becky Hill and Sonny Fodera return at number 35 with Never Be Alone.

Regular readers will know that the number one album often goes to a veteran act. This is another of those weeks, although the performers, Rod Stewart and Jools Holland, have not recorded an album together before. Swing Fever, a collection of songs even older than Rod Stewart, is Stewart’s eleventh number one album, but Holland’s first. Holland’s former band Squeeze didn’t reach the top ten with any of their studio albums. However, three compilations did make the upper reaches of the chart.

Scottish band The Snuts get their third top three album with Millennials at number two. Although it is a good album, it is, at just a few seconds shy of 30 minutes, somewhat short.

The same criticism can be levelled at Red Rum Club’s Western Approaches, a new entry at number eight. Again, it is a very good album but it is only just over half-an-hour long. If record companies want people to carry on buying albums rather than streaming them, surely they should be making sure they offer value for money.

Noah Kahan’s Stick Season is back up to number three while The Weeknd’s Highlights is at four.

Two rappers from the London area have new entries. Barking-born Potter Payper is at number five with Thanks For Hating. It is his fourth top ten album. Plaistow-based rapper Ghetts’ first three charting albums all peaked between numbers 21 and 30 before Conflict Of Interest gave him a first big hit by going to number two. Normal service is now resumed as On Purpose, With Purpose enters at number 29.

Singer-songwriter Nadine Shah is at number 25 with Filthy Underneath, a new peak with her fifth album.
