Wham have the Christmas number one again.
Just like last Christmas, last Christmas is the festive number one. Sabrina Carpenter is back at the top of the albums chart.

Wham have the Christmas number one again. Sabrina Carpenter returns to number one in the albums chart.

It was very tempting to copy and paste last year’s Christmas singles chart round-up with a note saying “This is almost right”. The influence of streaming playlists means that the charts immediately before and after Christmas look very similar each year. Only five years ago, there were only three Christmas songs in the top ten, including that year’s abomination by Ladbaby. This year there are seven. However, I decided against cheating, so here is an all-new 2024 Christmas Chart Commentary.

Wham’s Last Christmas is the Christmas number one for the second consecutive year. They are not the first act to have successive Christmas number ones, but they are the first to do it with the same song. Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody has been the Christmas number one twice, but not in successive years. There were sixteen years between its original chart run and its return to the chart shortly after Freddie Mercury died.

Gracie Abrahams spends another week at number two with That’s So True. Mariah Carey remains at number three with All I Want For Christmas Is You. It is the first song in UK chart history to spend one hundred weeks in the top forty, albeit over the course of thirty years. Tom Grennan has spent time this week promoting It Can’t Be Christmas in the hope that he could top the chart today. Sadly, it is only at number four. Rose and Bruno Mars slip to number five with Apt.

In past years, we have seen songs in the Christmas chart attacking the Tory government or individuals within it. A change of government this year doesn’t mean protest songs are no longer with us. A fictional band called Sir Starmer and the Granny Harmers has reworked Mud’s classic Lonely This Christmas as Freezing This Christmas to protest against the axeing of the Winter Fuel Allowance for most pensioners. It is a new entry at number 37.

One of the festive re-entries returns to the chart for a second time this year, thanks to a rigorous application of the chart rules. Ed Sheeran and Elton John’s Merry Christmas re-entered three weeks ago and climbed to number nine the following week. However, songs over three years old automatically go on to the Accelerated Chart Ratio (ACR) meaning that the value of each stream is halved. That led to the song dropping out of the top forty last week. This week it is back at number 33.

Slade re-enter at number 30 with Merry Xmas Everybody. It means that, as has become the norm, three songs originally released in 1973 are back in the chart again. As is also now customary, the one that is performing best, Elton John’s Step Into Christmas, is the one that did least well first time round.

Jose Feliciano’s Feliz Navidad climbs to number 21, matching its 2022 peak. Therefore, a first top twenty placing for the song, 54 years after it was released and four years since it first made the top forty seems likely next week.

One song that has reached a new peak is Laufey’s Christmas Magic which climbs one palace to number nineteen. She is performing on Graham Norton’s show tonight (Friday), so a further climb is likely next week. Sabrina Carpenter also achieves a new peak with a modern Christmas song. She climbs to number sixteen with A Nonsense Christmas.

In shock news, there is a new non-Christmas song entering the chart. Unfortunately, KSI’s Dirty is really rather boring. However, its relatively elevated position in the Christmas chart, number 31 means that it has a very good chance of becoming his tenth top ten hit in the new year.

The year 2024 has been a fantastic one for Sabrina Carpenter. After a few years of chart performances never really rising above mediocre, she has had three number one singles and a chart-topping album. That album’s run at the top was Short ‘n’ Sweet, lasting just one week, but it has spent eleven of the following fifteen weeks at number two with the rest at number three. This week it climbs back to number one.

Sabrina Carpenter’s success means that Michael Buble’s cheesy Christmas album is at number two. Chappell Roan’s The Rise And Fall Of A Midwest Princess climbs three places to number three. Taylor Swift’s The Tortured Poets Department falls to number four after spending the last two weeks at the top.

Twelve months ago The Rolling Stones had the Christmas number one album by releasing a live version of their Hackney Diamonds album. This year, The Reytons tried the same trick.

Their logic was reasonable. Even after downloads became the dominant form for buying music, physical albums sold in huge quantities in the lead-up to Christmas. As streaming took over, sales of albums over the Christmas period steadily declined until that part of the year became one of the worst sales periods. Therefore, a new album stood a chance of topping the chart without having to sell many copies.

As we have already seen, it didn’t work out for The Reytons. Their live album, Live LP Clifton Park, is at number five.

Dua Lipa released her live album, Live From The Royal Albert Hall two weeks ago and it entered the chart last week just outside the top forty. This week, following the airing of a live show on ITV, it climbs to number 40.

One of the most successful male artists of the year has been Teddy Swims with three top ten singles. His album I’ve Tried Everything But Therapy - Part I, released in January, entered at number 24 before climbing three places the following week. It has spent a further sixteen weeks in the top forty since then without breaking into the top twenty. This week, it finally does that by climbing to number twelve.

The Cure’s excellent Songs Of A Lost World album has proved itself to be surprisingly resilient since it topped the chart last month. This week, in its seventh week in the top forty, it climbs back up to number seventeen.

Snoop Dogg and Dr Dre have combined their alleged talents to come up with an offering called Missionary. Its first chart position is number 24.

?????

As has been the norm for several years, there will be no commentary next week. The first six days of the chart week will be the days leading up to, and including, Christmas Day. Because streaming sites are somehow incapable of providing data in a timely manner, Boxing Day streams for most sites will be estimated. If there is no assumption that streams of Christmas songs will fall significantly, there will be very few non-festive songs in the top forty. The first chart of 2025, and the first Suedehead chart commentary, will be swamped with re-entries. That will be on Friday 3 January.
