Gracie Abrams goes back to the top of the singles chart after giving way to Wham for a few weeks. Ed Sheeran's hits collection climbs to number one in the albums chart.
Gracie Abrams resumes her run at number one after a Christmas break. Ed Sheeran’s greatest hits collection tops the albums chart for the first time.
Last week’s top forty had 37 Christmas songs. The three exceptions make up this week’s top three. The highest non-Christmas song in last week’s chart was Gracie Abrams’ That’s So True. This week it climbs twenty places to resume its run at number one,.a run that was interrupted by Wham last month. It has now spent six weeks at the summit. Abrams re-enters the top forty with Close To You at number 37 and I Love You I’m Sorry one place higher.
Rose and Bruno Mars jump back up to number two with Apt, matching its previous peak. It is still awful. Lola Young’s Messy was at number seven in the Christmas chart before being pushed down to number 33 last week. This week she rebounds to a new peak of number three.
Unlike in recent years, one Christmas song has been streamed enough to get one last week in the top forty, and it is one of 2024’s new Christmas songs. Sam Fender’s It Can’t Be Christmas falls 27 places to number 30. His People Watching returns at number nineteen.
With almost all of the Christmas songs gone, that means we have a total of 36 new or re-entries. Disappointingly, the split is 34 re-entries and two complete newcomers. One of those newcomers isn’t exactly a new song. An act going by the name of The Adventures Of Stevie V had a number two hit with Dirty Cash back in 1990. Now it has been given a makeover by London DJ PAWSA and the new version lands at number twenty.
The other new song is another one of those whose title looks like an incomplete football result, Push 2 Start by Tyla. How many did Start score? The song entered the lower part of the chart last year but was soon pushed out by you know what.
Listing all the re-entries would be rather time-consuming and, frankly, a little boring. Therefore, I shall confine myself to the more notable ones including the songs that complete the top five.
Chrystal’s The Days didn’t really get a chance to take off last year. It was released in June, but didn’t reach the chart until it was re-released in October. Even then, it only reached number 24 in December. Now it is back at number five. Gigi Perez is back at number four with Sailor Song.
Noah Kahan’s Stick Season bounces back in at number 31. Last week it was named as the biggest song of 2024 but, at the same time, it narrowly failed to last a full calendar year in the top 100. Ironically, a song that mentions Christmas was kept out by the onslaught of Christmas songs. Put that in your song Alanis Morissette.
Unlike Stick Season, Teddy Swims’ Lose Control did manage to spend the whole of 2024 in the top 100. It was very close though. It was at number 100 last week. This week it jumps back up to number 23. His Bad Dreams returns at number seven. It got one place higher before festive songs got in the way. Similarly, he is back at number six with The Door, also one palace short of its 2024 peak.
Myles Smith’s Nice To Meet You is back at number thirteen, just one place below its previous peak.
As usual, very few new albums were released over the CHristmas and New Year period, leading to a distinct lack of new entries in the chart. One of the few releases last week was a new edition of Ed Sheeran’s +–=÷× (The Tour Collection). Confusingly, this new edition now includes live performances although you could be forgiven for thinking that “Tour Collection” meant that the original version was a live album.
The new edition sees the album climb to number one for the first time having previously stalled at number five on three separate occasions. It becomes Sheeran’s eighth number one album and gives him a 49th week atop the albums chart, adding to his 61 weeks topping the singles chart. His combined total of 22 number ones matches that of Westlife, Eminem and the Rolling Stones and behind only Elvis Presley, The Beatles and Madonna. Only The Beatles and The Stones have spent more weeks at number one than Sheeran’s combined 110. Thanks to Colin (zeuss at Buzzjack, orthon at Haven) for some of the information used in this paragraph.
Sabrina Carpenter’s Short ‘n’ Sweet is at number two yet again. It has so far notched up 13 weeks in the runner-up spot. The rest of the top five is also unchanged. Szas’s SOS is at number three, Chappell Roan’s The Rise And Fall Of A Midwest Princess at four and Charli XCX’s Brat at five.
Finally, a Happy New Year to all readers. We are now a mere 500 years from finding out whether Zager and Evans were right.
