Gracie Abrams remains at number one in the singles chart. Elton John scores a ninth number one album.
Gracie Abrams stays at the top of the singles chart. Elton John gets his ninth number one album with his Diamonds collection.
After returning to the summit last week, Gracie Abrams’ That’s So True gets a seventh week at number one in the singles chart. The last song to spend exactly seven weeks at number one was Sabrina Carpenter’s Espresso. Like That’s So true, Espresso had a run of five weeks at the top before being interrupted and returning for a further two weeks.
Rose and Bruno Mars spend another week at number two with Apt. Lola Young is still at number three with Messy. Gigi Perez remains at number four with her Sailor Song which continues to sound good.
Jimin had a number four hit with the appropriately-named Who last summer. It fell fairly rapidly before making a brief return to the top forty. This week, for some reason (it certainly can’t be lots of people suddenly discovering the song and loving it), it is back at number five.
Sza gets her sixteenth top forty hit at number 21 with BMF. Best Monkey Forever? Blue Moon Fever? Bingeing Monday to Friday? It restores the balance between her hits as lead artist and as a featured artist at eight each.
Doechii enters at number 39 with a dreadful song going by the name of Denial Is A River, not exactly the most original; of puns. If there are follow-ups such as Eva Rest Is A Mountain and Hot Togo Is A Chappell Roan Song About A Country, I hope they are of better quality than this rubbish. Who is Doechii? She is a rapper from Florida.
Chappell Roan’s Pink Pony Club was released in 2020, but didn’t become a hit until last year after Good Luck Babe had launched her chart career. The song was written for an album that was never released after she was dropped by her record label. This week Pink Pony Club returns to the chart at number 22. Despite having two top ten hits last year, she was announced this week as the winner of the BBC Sound Of 2025 poll. It is understandable that the rules should allow for an act that has taken time to receive serious attention, but surely this award is meant for acts that even a large proportion of music fans will not have heard of.
Sam Smith’s chart debut was in 2013 as the featured artist on Naughty Boy's chart-topping La La La. Thanks to something on Tik Tok, the song returns this week at number 32. Whether it hangs around for as long as some of the other old songs returning to the chart recently remains to be seen.
Elon Musk took time off from floating the idea of invading a key ally and overthrowing its government this week to promote an unlikely Greatest Hits album, Diamonds. At the start of the week, it looked like it might succeed as the South African / Canadian / American was at number one in the first update.
Oh, hang on, it’s Elton, not Elon. Let’s start again. Elton John and his record company spent time this week promoting his Greatest Hits set, Diamonds. At the start of the week, it looked like it might succeed as the veteran singer was at number one in the first update. He was still ahead in Wednesday’s update, but by a very narrow margin. Would the various physical formats (vinyl, cassette, playable pizza) be enough to take the album to number one for the first time?
The answer to the above question is Yes. The album reached number five when it was released in 2017 and, thanks to the fact that he has several songs that pick up significant numbers of streams every week, has been in the top 100 every week since then. It reached number two in the summer of 2023 but now gets to the very top for the first time in its 326th week in the top forty. It is his ninth number one album in the UK.
Elton John has now spent a combined 59 weeks at number one in the singles and album charts, matching Madonna’s total. That puts him in joint eighth place in the all-time list, one week behind Take That. Thanks, once again, to Colin for the list which I also used last week.
Sabrina Carpenter’s Short ‘n’ Sweet continues to refuse to leave the number two berth. Sza is at number three with SOS and Ed Sheeran’s Tour Collection falls to number four after a week at the top. With Ed Sheeran and Elton John topping the chart with hits collections in the last two weeks, The Weeknd’s The Highlights is now the highest placed hits collection not to have topped the chart. It spends its 205th top forty week at number five.
Lil Baby has the only new entry in the albums chart. He is at number twelve with WHAM. Apparently that is an acronym for Who Hard As Me, so a tribute to Roger Daltrey’s band rather than George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley.
