surprsingly fantastic top ten this week, minus Gossip and the song with the bizarre chart run at #9 that I haven't listened to yet
Great debuts for Madonna and Shakira, I thought they would be the other way round, but seeing how huge Shaki has been in Germany I guess not
Germany must have been having a joke of a week when Ray Of Light peaked at #28 :/

Ray Of Light was actually a relative flop in Europe ;)

But these kind of "oh my god so low" peaks are common in countries like Germany and France. In the UK, all the big artists were guaranteed to have successive top10 hits and never once miss the top20.

shame, as it's such a great song, I prefer it to Frozen personally, both are brilliant though

I guess that definitely doesn't happen anymore here...Miles Away was a massive flop here, and even Cliff Richard can't get himself a top 20 single in the download era now!

I actually never liked ROL, deffo my least fav single of that era, with Power Of Goodbye and Nothing Really Matters being my favs

I agree about the download era changing the UK charts when it comes to peaks. I think people are starting slightly to change their minds about missing the top10 being a huge flop for big artists, as more and more of them seem to struggle beyond their 2nd single.

yep Power Of Goodbye and Nothing Really Matters were both excellent too :D can't believe they've been left off Celebration 2 Disc :(

agreed, although obviously there are acts of the 'moment' who seem to hit with everything like David Guetta, Black Eyed Peas, Mika (album 1), Fergie, Mark Ronson, Timbaland, Beyonce, Tinchy Stryder, Dizzee Rascal, and obviously Jay-Z looks set to be the latest one

I agree about the top ten not meaning a flop thing..for example I wouldn't call Take That's Up All Night a huge flop, even though it missed the top ten, but if they'd had a #14 in 1994, it would have been a disaster for their career

Indeed. I think the UK chart looks more European with the download era. What made the UK chart so different were all the many debuts in a single week, most of them high up in the chart, reaching their peak position on its first week. With the rest of europe, even in the physical era, most songs climbed to their peak, meaning for a lot of them they'd have decent chart runs, but low peaks. The illusion of many artists that had hits in the UK is that the peak position counts the most, yet if you look at its full chart-run, many had a terrible overall performance.

Another thing that caused low peaks in other european countries was the competition, especially for countries like Germany. Being in the middle of Europe, and a relatively easy market to crack, most european artists released their singles there, making it very tough for established artists to compete.

looks like the UK is quickly returning to the old way though, this will be the third week in a row with two brand new entries in the top 3! give it a couple of years and it will be back to how it was before probably, with the exception of 2nd, 3rd and 4th singles still climbing to their peak. record companies just seem to have taken a few years to have learnt how to adapt to the download market...

I do wish that we'd get more new songs here though, it pains me to see only 4 or 5 new entries a week in the top 40 :( most music I listen to isn't music released here, I'd get incredibly bored if I limited myself to what I'm forced to hear on the radio/TV here

I know what you mean about that... considering how easy it is to release stuff on download, I don't know why we still don't get half of the European stuff...

Glad to have a return of the high debuts that said, but with the download era, it should mean that most songs, good ones at least, where there isn't more hype than talent, get decent runs AND high peaks :)

I just want more open mindedness when it comes to promotion! foreign songs really could be hits here if they had Radio 1 A-listing etc...but they don't get the chance :( thank god Agnes got signed up, Release Me was far too good not to see the light of day here
