Posted September 25, 200915 yr I know that this will be virtually impossible to get right, but I was curious to know what people estimate the Top 20 UK SINGLES ACTS of the 1950's were? Then the Top 20 Acts of the 1960's, 1970's, & 1980's? (Singles Acts only). Can anyone come up with any Lists? I realise that they have to be estimated. (And it may be going a step too far, to see if people can show actual estimated Singles Sales Totals, for the Top 20 Acts of those 4 Decades). For example - would Frankie Laine be the biggest UK Singles Act of the 1950's - or would it be Elvis Presley? Where would Guy Mitchell be? Or Pat Boone? The Beatles were easily THE Singles Act of the 1960's - but who was 2nd? Was it Elvis or Cliff? Or neither? Where would The Shadows be on their own? Where, with the Cliff Richard & The Shadows Sales added to their own? The 1970's? ABBA in first place? But, who would be 2nd? Rod Stewart? Slade? Queen? 1980's - Madonna? Followed by Shakin' Stevens, perhaps? Or would it be Michael Jackson in 1st or 2nd place? Where would Queen be? And Madness? What do YOU think? Edited September 25, 200915 yr by zeus555
September 27, 200915 yr Author These Decade Lists are based on the UK Top 10 Singles Chart. They are courtesy of a Poster called Taizu, at CHC Media Forums. Only a few Acts have made the Top 20 List for more than one Decade. And, only Elvis Presley, (1950's - 1970's), & Madonna, (1980's - 2000's), have been Listed for as many as 3 Decades. Notice that in the 1990's & 2000's, the Decade's No.1 Act Scored far less Points, than those from the 1950's to the 1980's. Here is how Taizu introduces his Lists:, This is based on the top 10 singles charts, with one point for each week at number ten, and ten points for each week at number one: 1950s: 20 Eddie Calvert 289 19 Winifred Atwell 305 18 Connie Francis 305 17 Ruby Murray 306 16 Frank Sinatra 340 15 Everly Brothers 343 14 Eddie Fisher 347 13 Nat King Cole 352 12 Dean Martin 353 11 Bill Haley & his Comets 369 10 Mantovani 402 9 Perry Como 419 8 Doris Day 452 7 Jonnie Ray 456 6 Lonnie Donegan 497 5 Pat Boone 504 4 David Whitfield 532 3 Guy Mitchell 681 2 Elvis Presley 861 1 Frankie Laine 1081 1960s: 20 Billy Fury 260 19 Seekers 265 18 Beach Boys 267 17 Del Shannon 276 16 Gerry & the Pacemakers 277 15 Helen Shapiro 278 14 Kinks 291 13 Adam Faith 307 12 Manfred Mann 333 11 Tom Jones 356 10 Frank Ifield 366 9 Hollies 372 8 Everly Brothers 373 7 Engelbert Humperdinck 408 6 Roy Orbison 414 5 Rolling Stones 536 4 Shadows 562 3 Elvis Presley 1022 2 Cliff Richard 1162 1 Beatles 1386 1970s: 20 10CC 255 19 John Travolta 257 18 Bee Gees 260 17 Mud 261 16 David Bowie 271 15 Bay City Rollers 279 14 Wings 282 13 Queen 285 12 Donny Osmond 292 11 New Seekers 303 10 Olivia Newton-John 313 9 Elvis Presley 317 8 Boney M 329 7 Sweet 332 6 Showaddywaddy 345 5 Gary Glitter 413 4 Rod Stewart 480 3 T.Rex 499 2 Slade 502 1 ABBA 666 (!) 1980s: 20 Jam 210 19 George Michael 221 18 Jason Donovan 234 17 UB40 238 16 Adam & the Ants 246 15 Duran Duran 272 14 Paul McCartney 274 13 Culture Club 287 12 Pet Shop Boys 287 11 Stevie Wonder 296 10 Madness 300 9 Cliff Richard 301 8 David Bowie 313 7 Frankie Goes To Hollywood 345 6 Phil Collins 347 5 Michael Jackson 349 4 Kylie Minogue 366 3 Wham! 370 2 Shakin' Stevens 378 1 Madonna 668 1990s: 20 KLF 185 19 All Saints 185 18 Prodigy 203 17 Oasis 225 16 East 17 232 15 2Unlimited 236 14 Snap! 245 13 Cher 247 12 Mariah Carey 254 11 Elton John 254 10 Whitney Houston 261 9 George Michael 277 8 Wet Wet Wet 295 7 Celine Dion 366 6 Bryan Adams 373 5 Spice Girls 377 4 Michael Jackson 382 3 Madonna 394 2 Take That 428 1 Boyzone 445 2000-2008: 20 Atomic Kitten 219 19 Pink 224 18 Take That 224 17 S Club 7 232 16 Kylie Minogue 235 15 Black-Eyed Peas 238 14 Akon 249 13 Robbie Williams 260 12 Nelly 287 11 Sugababes 297 10 Shakira 298 9 Madonna 301 8 Beyonce 305 7 Britney Spears 327 6 Timbaland 350 5 Girls Aloud 352 4 Justin Timberlake 361 3 Eminem 383 2 Westlife 419 1 Rihanna 447
