Paramore shifting 5,000 more than Madonna...which may have been slightly surprising, but then we find that the physical single slipped quite a bit too...

Time for the Flashback to...October 1984.

The Top TV, back then:

01 CORONATION STREET 16.60

02 FRESH FIELDS 16.30 the ITV answer to Terry And June with Julia McKensie aka Miss Marple, and the late Anton Rodgers on Tues at 8.30pm

03 DUTY FREE 14.70 the sitcom holiday to Spain with Keith Barron and co on Mondays at 8pm

04 THE BENNY HILL SHOW easy comedy with the late Benny on Weds at 8pm

05 JUST GOOD FRIENDS 13.80 the never ending will they won`t they sitcom with Paul Nicholas & Jan Francis

06 TENKO 13.70 Stephanie Cole and co, in the World War II Singapore drama. Due to costs, after 2 series...it was filmed in Dorset!

07 PAUL DANIELS MAGIC SHOW 12.90 pulling them in, on a Saturday night

07 PLAY YOUR CARDS RIGHT 12.90 Mr Forsyth on Fridays at 7.00

09 GLORY BOYS 12.80 Terrorism drama (probably not allowed today) with Rod Steiger and Anthony Perkins

09 TRIPPERS DAY 12.80 Leonard Rossiter`s last sitcom in a Supermarket. Ironically Tripper was replaced by Slinger, as Bruce Forsyth took on the role in 1986

11 CROSSROADS 12.60

12 ME AND MY GIRL 12.50 Richard O`Sullivan/Tim Brooke Taylor...Daughter/Father sitcom on Fridays at 8.30

12 GIVE US A CLUE 12.50 Thursday evening along with Michael Parkinson/Lionel Blair/Una Stubbs playing charades. Michael Aspel now presented "Child`s Play"

14 THE A TEAM 12.00 Saturday Action with Mr T, and co

15 JULIET BRAVO 11.90 Anna Carterat as Kate Longton in Saturday police drama around 7.30

16 THE KRYPTON FACTOR 11.50 Monday at 7pm, with Gordon Burns and the grueling superperson quiz come physical workout

17 IT`LL BE ALRIGHT ON THE NIGHT 11.30 Sunday night bloopers with Denis "Mr Clipboard" Norden

17 DES O`CONNER TONIGHT 11.30 Des` first series for ITV after leaving BBC and swapping with Bob Monkhouse

19 WE LOVE TV 11.10 Gloria Hunniford hosted this tv quiz on ITV at 8pm on Fridays

19 BLANKETY BLANK 11.10 Les Dawson on Tuesdays on BBC...In my honest opinion, not as good as the days of the great Terry Wogan!

A typical Saturday on BBC 1 looked like this Bob`s Full House/The Late Late Breakfast Show (Noel Edmonds/Mike Smith)/Paul Daniels Magic Show/Juliet Bravo...the BBC winning the ratings on a Saturday night, although Noel Edmonds struggled to get 10 million for the quite dire/ill fated "Late Late Breakfast Show". Unfortunately we were stuck with Edmonds for nearly 25 years on a Saturday! What a shame Jimmy Tarbuck turned down "The Generation Game" in 1982! As Parky replaced Aspel on "Give Us A Clue", you may remember that the first 3 series used the theme "Chicken Man"...this was the theme to "Grange Hill", but "Give Us A Clue" used a remade version. For some reason this particular series on Thursdays, was more popular than "Top Of The Pops"...now down to 8 million viewers. "Emmerdale Farm wasn`t doing so well, either. Keith Barron not only played "David" in "Duty Free", for he was also in a dire Carla Lane BBC Sitcom "Leaving"...the divorce sitcom with Susan Hampshire, and Richard Vernon. Good job it only went out on BBC 2! The previous mentioned Terry Wogan was taking over from Michael Parkinson on Saturdays at 10pm...where he claimed he relaunched the career of Cilla Black, put the sparkle into Omar Shariff`s love life, and put Neil Kinnock on to the path of leading the Labour Party! Shame on him, for all three then! I`ll give you ten points if you can tell me...Who was originally going to present "Blind Date?" Quick, quick, quick...It was Duncan "Chase Me" Norvelle (the camp comiedian). What a shame the producers didn`t go for his unshown pilot version. You may have worked out from this that I don`t particularly love Cilla Black, or Noel Edmonds let alone Neil Kinnock (well Neil did appear in a Tracey Ulllman video)!!

40 33 WHITE LINES - GRANDMASTER & MELLE MEL

Well, Kid Jensen said those immortal words "On the Independant Radio Network, welcome to Britain`s fastest music survey" for the first time. Was he right? At this point...Yes! Sales, and Airplay were added together to make the chart, up to 2 weeks ahead of the rest. Much better in those days, because Independant stations, were just that...independant on the music they played. I mean looking at that top 30, in today`s formatted playlists...Shakin` Stevens, Adam Ant, Big Country, Malcom McClaren, Kraftwerk, Dio, and Grandmaster Melle Mel would all be way, away from the playlist! The top 30, was not much away from Radio One`s chart on the following week. Although a slight midweek sales period of the 10th October 1984, placed Culture Club`s "War Song" at #1...and by the time the week ended Stevie Wonder overtook, thus not making #1 on Radio One. The only one with an airplay problem was "Agadoo" from Black Lace...far too cheesey for airplay! Only 43 here, but still managed 25 on Radio One. As time moved on, Radio One began to lose listeners. With the Radio One Top 40, being behind plus Richard Skinner and producer Dave Price, trying to cram in 40 records in 2 hours! By 1985, the Network Chart had stolen a great deal of the Top 40s listeners. Even more ironically in March 1986, Richard Skinner quit Radio One and joined the headquarters of the Network Chart (Capital Radio). By then, listeners to Capital were getting an extra hour of the Network Chart between 4 & 5pm. Kid Jensen played the new entries between 75 & 31 in that hour. With Radio One still cutting records, and beginning at 4.30, with a strange new release show called "Chartbusters". Did Radio One get any listeners back, when they started to countdown the new chart on a Sunday in Oct 1987? Well, not really. Even though Radio One was ahead of the game, they still skipped records and Bruno Brookes did shout a lot. Also, trying to fool listeners thst the new chart was still coming in! How could it be? As he started the countdown at 40, so it couldn`t change and locked off at midnight on the previous night! So, maybe the Big Top 40 were not the first to insult our intelligence.

Especially when the Independant Radio playlists still include "Broken Strings" along with James Morrison. Yes, Independant Radio`s strings are definately broken beyond repair!

04 THIS IS IT - MICHAEL JACKSON 12th Oct

Looks like we are getting this as a proper single after all. I knew they wouldn't make it album-only. I doubt it'll be #1 though what with it having no promo whatsoever, and Alexandra and Robbie are both out... didn't realise both were out so soon tbh! Chip will be easily #1 next week anyway.

Yay for The Saturdays pre-orders

Good to see know Leona climbing too! Cheers Dave!

Thanks Dave

Loving the retro... I Just Called To Say I Love You is my mum's fav song ever

Great retro

And LOL at Cliff Richard the #1 physical single climbing to #1 physical singles must be very low, at least Cliff got his decade #1 but only in physical format

By the way :) Combined Madonna, Dizzee and KoL sales are pretty high in iTunes despite being relatively low for the highest of versions of their songs. It just shows that nothing has changed and iTunes is still dominating: there are just multiply versions which confuse us.

Also... If we knew year-to-date physical chart with sales... :( It would be very interesting, entertaining and cognitive.

To be fair, KoL were in the 14-23 region all week with their higher version, they are at #22 now... I'm surprised it's as LOW as #18 for the week! Will be interesting to see if they can hold top 15 this week, though I reckon Paloma will knock them out, and maybe also The Veronicas.

Here comes the big finish with the combined physical/downloads this week...A few have emailed recently to how this chart is compiled, and are impressed by the "closeness" to Sundays Top 40. Well, the top 20 is based on Chart Show tv minus videoplay with added sales. The 21 - 40 is a mish-mash of physical sells & downloads, where as the 41 - 60 is purely based on downloads making it as close to Radio One, as possible.

= Position on Chart Show tv (Chart can be seen Saturdays at 9am/Sunday 11am, Sky Ch365/Freesat Ch500)

Everyone`s ganging up on me, about figures!!! I`m not giving them away though, because it is quite close at the top really...certainly in the top 3. As we anticipate a re-entry from Toto and "Africa".

Don`t forget the Christmas comp is still running until 11th Dec. Only 18 entries so far. All you have to do is give me 3 acts that will appear in the top 10 on the Christmas Chart on Radio One 20th Dec. X Factor winner not allowed! The winner gets the top 10 singles on CD. Where the song is download only, you get a corresponding album, that contains the track. Email answers to davericktaylor@yahoo.co.uk

Thanks Dave, really happy for Paloma Faith and Temper Trap on singles :)

Jay-Z's Young Forever only #39? Surely gotta be higher than that.

I REALLY hope Empire State Of Mind can go up to #2 now it is iTunes #1.

There have been 22 physical number ones, so far this year.

The top 5 sellers:

01 JLS - BEAT AGAIN

02 COMIC RELIEF - ISLANDS IN THE STREAM

03 BLACK EYED PEAS - I GOTTA FEELING

04 BLACK EYED PEAS - BOOM BOOM POW

05 RIGHT NOW - FLO RIDA

I can`t confirm sales of those, but to note on 8th Feb, the lowest sale of a week`s physical ever went to Alexandra Burke...selling just 981 copies, that week. The following week, "Just Can`t Get Enough" Sugababes did 11,087.

There have been 22 physical number ones, so far this year.

I can`t confirm sales of those, but to note on 8th Feb, the lowest sale of a week`s physical ever went to Alexandra Burke...selling just 981 copies, that week. The following week, "Just Can`t Get Enough" Sugababes did 11,087.

quite confused by this statement Dave - Was alexandra the lowest physical #1 ever with that figure? And was it Saturdays Just can't get enough or Sugababes Get Sexy which shifted 11,087 at #1? thanks. think we'd all be keen to to know physical sales figures and to what extent they affect things now, particularly at the higher reaches

Saturdays 11,087. I suddenly confused myself there...I`ve got this printed sheet, that credits Sugababes, that is totally wrong!

Thank you so much for this info!!!! It's very-very interesting. By the way, talking about Sugababes? Do you know / Could you tell what are the physical sales of 'Get Sexy' (Sugababes), 'Beat Again' (just to see how much the strongest physical is sold) and 'Right Round' (Flo Rida). I think many of us would be very thankful for this info. If it is allowed, of course.
Ugh, I'll be over-the-moon if LoveGame gets another week in the top 20, still selling fabulously on physical and if Paparazzi gets another week in the top 40, which could be quite likely after it being covered on X Factor. All will be revealed tonight :drama:
