The first ever single to reach #1 in the UK that was banned by the BBC at the time.

It reached #1 this week back in 1969.

It was also the first completely foreign language single to reach #1

The single was Je T'aime...Moi Non Plus by Jane Birkin & Serge Gainsbourg

You can see the video and the chart HERE

Why was it banned? Because it was French?

It had all this heavy breathing sexy stuff on it! Infact the chart compiled for Radio One did not actually have the 2 Record labels (Fontana/Major Minor) listed seperately. They were both listed together. The record didn`t really go from 16-1, it went from 2-1.

So, much was this heavy groaning stuff, that an Instrumental group called Sounds Nice did a version (that they did play on the radio) called "Love At First Sight".

It was also the only occasion that 2 Records on the top 20 were missed, because they were banned...The other one was Max Romeo`s "dreaming in the rain" song (I don`t think) called "Wet Dream".

There were a couple of prior #1s to be banned:

Ricky Valance - Tell Laura I Love Her (due to the fact that it was about death)

Don Cornell - Hold My Hand (had the words 'kingdom of Heaven').

Je T'Aime was a fantastic record, Gainsbourg was a genius in fact, in a way it's a shame that he's remembered here as a one-hit wonder... in his native France, he's considered a prolific and successful musician... and dirty old man

He even recorded a duet with his daughter called "Lemon inceste"...guess what it's about.

He is also remember as the author of "Poupée de cire, poupée de son" that won Eurovision in 1965.

The most famous #1 was "Relax"...

...and "God save the queen" was so banned that it was never officially #1!

Yeah, but still were played on the Light Programme. So, a partial ban.

Yeah and played whilst lower down the chart until Mike Read put his spoke in!
