Posted June 30, 200619 yr Colin and Edith radio show to end from bbc.co.uk DJs Colin Murray and Edith Bowman are to end their three-year Radio 1 partnership as part of an overhaul of the station's schedules. Bowman will now host their 1300 to 1600 weekday slot alone, while Murray is to present a show offering new music from Mondays to Thursdays at 2200. New shows focusing on particular music genres and presented by experts are to run at 2100 on those four nights. Most of the schedule changes are due to come into effect on 25 September. 'Evolution' Murray said: "I'm grateful to be given the chance to front a show that really hits those turned-on, engaged evening Radio 1 listeners." The programme would be "exciting and personal and it's going to show a blatant disregard for musical pigeon-holing", he said. Bowman, whose Radio 1 partnership with Murray began with the Saturday breakfast show in 2003, said: "I'll miss our daily banter but I'm on cloud nine at what lies ahead and the incredible opportunity I've been given." Her afternoon show would be an "evolution of the present one", she added. Other changes include: New signings Eddie Halliwell and Trophy Twins to present club music shows Chris Coco and Fergie to leave the station, though Fergie to continue to put together Essential Mixes A 1Xtra showcase to highlight the best new black music Specialist music output to increase by four hours a week overall Station controller Andy Parfitt said the changes to specialist programming would offer a "broader range of content". "We believe that this and the amazing talent line-up will help even more listeners to come and sample the wealth of distinctive specialist shows Radio 1 has to offer."
June 30, 200619 yr Well theres no huge changes, as no major DJ's are leaving but I doubt that Edith Bowman's show will be as good without Colin Murray.
June 30, 200619 yr Colin and Edith are the only ones I dont mind listening to on Radio 1 apart from Scott Mills. Either of those would make a fab replacement for the chart show :P
June 30, 200619 yr There need to be some radical change and quick, they are missing out more and more on the best music and big hits. The latest Shakira hit which seem likely to be #1 on Sunday is not even listed, they poorly c Listed Chicane that should of be A-Listed etc, the impact of Radio1 is becoming less and less as they loss listeners, or even have listeners to the JK & Jerk show but listeners are not impressed. Pull the flush and switch out the lights when you leave thank you! Basic problem is they are not capturing the young listener audience, they need to get trend and informed Dj's not comics that are out of touch.
June 30, 200619 yr Hopefully they will re think playing shakira. The existing management is dated and I really doubt they will start playing that until it's shown on the footy final.
June 30, 200619 yr The existing management is dated and I really doubt they will start playing that until it's shown on the footy final. They won't play Shakira, well they may eventually but I doubt they will. 40% of the music played on Radio 1 has to be from a British artist / band and this is normally around 45% - 60% most of the time, hence why they play British hip hop and RnB that barely scrapes the top 40 becuase Radio 1 is a Radio station aimed at all genres so there has to be a balance. They've chanhed there way with certian singer / songwriters like James Blunt because he was majorly succeslful and sold a bucket full of albums hence now why they playlist more British singer / songwriters like Pablo Nutinti and James Morrison.
June 30, 200619 yr Basic problem is they are not capturing the young listener audience, They are!. It only really caters for Teenies and Urban fans with a few indie bands thrown in. Fans of other music a hard done by in the main. What about fans of real Dance music , by that I mean those that are not just continual sampled loops. Also what about country fans. There's some good stuff out there. In fact it's the only decent stuff to come out of the US these days. In the meantime i'll stick with R2 in the car and European music stations on satelite radio at home.
June 30, 200619 yr Hopefully they will re think playing shakira. I know why they don't promote Shakira - it's because she's not British or American. Another great female singer Anastacia never gets playlisted. It's very rarely that they playlist European acts either. Same as going back 4 years. Remember Scooter - I know they're not everyone's cup of tea but Ramp (Logical Song) spent 3 weeks at #2 and 8 weeks in the top 10. Did it get even in the C-list - NOPE!. Neither did the top 10 follow-up, Nessaja, nor the followup, nor the followup, nor the followup. In fact they have had 10 Top 40 hits and not one was playlisted. Many other European acts such as HIM, The Rasmus, Rammstein, Juanes, Eros Ramazotti, and the great European techno dance of the 90s never got playlisted apart from 2 Unlimited. It's just not fair on people who don't like teeny boybands or urban. Are they trying to brainwash us or what? Edited June 30, 200619 yr by Euro Music
June 30, 200619 yr Its because Radio 1 is maiinly a Britsih . They play there fair play of American artists, but the majority of the music is British on the station and so it should be as after all British people pay to fund Radio 1 so its only fair that it mainly plays British artists.

June 30, 200619 yr They are!. [capturing the young listener audience] Rubbish! Did they play Crazy Frog - Axel F? No, they didn't not even when it was #1 for FOUR weeks!! Who bought the single to make it #1, almost entirely kids aged less then 16. Shakira is now #2 looking to be heading for #1. Who is buying it? Again it's the younger audience as can be seen from the lower sales of downloads compared to physicals. Radio1 have lost touch :lyear: Problem is someone in Radio1 has to take responsibility and make a decision about which records are good and which are not. Whether they play Shakira or not should be depending on whether it's great record or not, and as HDL clearly is that should be a no brainer. They don't have anyone that can make even those simple decision. It's not always a simple task to be honest. So they make bland rules like chosing British music over foreign. Such a rule just shows there inability to make good decisions and alienates the audience.

Radio 1 isnt looking for the under 16 audience, there lookin for the 16-25 audience, so if under 16s are buying shakira then they made the right choice, thats why they dont play alot of pop bands music unless there seen as fairly credible like the Sugababes. They mostly play music the appeals to the Uni students, which is Indie/rock, Dance & Urban, i actually dont mind R1, JK & Joel apart.
July 1, 200619 yr The whole of radio 1 is c**p. Not once have they played Shakira or Anastacia since both artists made there debut
July 1, 200619 yr I personally don't like Radio1, I find all you hear is the same old Indie $h!t, over and over and over and over, and that bores me. -_-
