Great album. I like the way the songs are like a more "angry" Depeche Mode-esque sound, and it's different to the rest of their stuff. I'm gonna have to dig this out again soon.

on my second listen today. This is such a great album, hence it being my favourite album ever, some real genius songs, and ahead of it's time. Head Like A Hole, Terrible Lie, Something I Can Never Have, Sin, Ringfinger

Bloody hell! 20 Years!

All the formative albums from my late teens/early twenties are reaching 20 now!

Next month Ministry's The Mind Is A terrible Thing To Taste reaches 20 and these two albums will go together forever in my mind.

Absolutely fantastic record.

Funny you should say that, but I've always seen NIN as being a "less angry" Skinny Puppy in a lot of ways.....

But, I think that the idea behind what Trent was doing was to give the dehumanizing nature of Industrial a more human face, and more of an emotional aspect to the genre... In that he almost certainly succeeded, there are very few songs as nakedly emotional as "Losing Something I Can Never Have"..... I can honestly say that in certain circumstances this song has had me shedding tears and has also been a comfort to me.... Pretty Hate Machine is one of those albums I go back to time and time again, because it IS an absolute, bona fide CLASSIC, it deserves to be seen in the same terms as the true greats such as "Revolver", "Exile on Main Street", "Four Symbols", "Hunky Dory", "Electric Ladyland", etc....

I so agree with you there, every household should have a copy, I would literally put this album on the same level as Pet Sounds.

I listened to the album 3 times in full yesterday, such great lyrics all the way through, Trent's shouting is amazing, and there is some brilliant use of samples all through.

Really shows rock doesnt need to be dominated by guitar.

Truely is my favourite album ever, and I wouldnt have it any other way.

Absolutely a classic album. Saw NIN 3 times this summer - twice at the Molson Ampitheatre in Toronto, and once at one of their small-venue shows in New York (at Terminal 5). The NYC show was the highlight of my summer, by far. Sad they're gone for now, they could sure put on one hell of a show.

I hate you.
