017 Interpol 'The Heinrich Maneuver' (#2 of 2007)

After two fantastic albums producing some equally brilliant singles it was always going to be difficult for Interpol to do it again. But it's Interpol, so of course they managed it! More upbeat than most of their previous material and heavily reliant on a riff it was a comeback which stuck to the typical Interpol sound but was still different enough to say they'd progressed. I can't see it being as far towards the top of a lot of Interpol fans lists, but I adore it. It's a shame they didn't release 'Pioneer to the Falls' at some point, they'd have had two of my top 3 in 2007 and 3 songs in my top 20 now.

019 The Horrors 'Who Can Say'

After the 8 minute masterpiece 'Sea Within A Sea' album 'Primary Colours' was always going to be top of my 'To download' list. I wasn't really expecting it to be of the same quality and same sound, but surprisingly it was. The instant standout from the album was this, 'Who Can Say', and I was delighted that this were to be the second single. After I'd been charting this for a few weeks and it had started to fall again I thought to myself "I might regret this not being a number one". It didn't have a bad chart run, 9 weeks in the top 5 (05-03-02-02-03-03-04-04-05) is pretty exceptional. But its kept growing on me throughout the year and I certainly do regret it now. It's something that I always pay close attention to the lyrics when listening. It's so wonderfully heartfelt, nothing more so than the lyrical sample from Jay & The American's 1962 single 'She Cried'.

And when I told her I didn't love her anymore

She cried

And when I told her her kisses were not like before

She cried

And when I told her another girl had caught my eye

She cried

And then I kissed her with a kiss

That could only mean goodbye

amazing track, amazing album, so many good songs on it.

the only songs I can think of that might be top five are One Day Like This and With Every Heartbeat, hopefully the latter will be higher...

016 Peter, Bjorn & John 'Young Folks' (#1 of 2006)

Towards the end of summer 2007 everyone was whilstling this song, if not out loud but in their head. A year earlier, it was constantly going around in my head and spent 5 weeks at the top of my chart. I did tire of it a little the following summer when it was everywhere but in the two years since its regrown on me. Great lyrics, great combination of the male/female lyrics. Victoria Bergsman.

015 Deerhunter 'Nothing Ever Happened' (#3 of 2008)

Last October I downloaded this almost randomly. It sounded simply ok to start with but the more I listened to it the better it got, it's rare something grows on me so much in such a short space of time. By the end of November it had completed its rise and reached the ascent of my Personal Chart. It's only got even better since. It's almost a song of two halves, with vocals in the first half and then they stop as the instrumentation is allowed to build in to something so utterly joyous. It's easily my favourite of the two 'halves', but at the same time it wouldn't work without the other.

love Young Folks, although admittedly I didn't hear it until its 2007 release

Both good, I think i have heard The Heinrich Maneuver but can't remember.

014 The Temper Trap 'Sweet Disposition' (#3 of 2009)

A bit recent? Well perhaps, but I do feel it's a deserving position for the song. I remember seeing them at Glastonbury in the summer but not this song. I thought they were alright so when their album leaked later on in the summer I downloaded it. As soon as I heard this song I knew it was something special. I spent a lot of time listening to it and I've not even begun to tire of it, even though I've massively overplayed it in such a short space of time. And with a recent chart run for me of 08-02-01-01-01-01-01-02-02-02-02-03-04 it doesn't look like I'm going to be tiring of it anytime soon. Some people like their little known acts to remain little known, but I was absolutely delighted this became a sizebale UK hit, especially at a time when this type of music isn't faring so well. God bless Jose Mourinho.

013 Franz Ferdinand 'Take Me Out' (#2 of 2004)

Their breakthrough hit from 2004, this has always remained my favourite Franz Ferdinand song. It started the wave indie music to become commercially popular and they're one of few bands from that time who've remained consistantly good, even if not many others do.

014 The Temper Trap 'Sweet Disposition' - Amazing

013 Franz Ferdinand 'Take Me Out' - Good

Awesome chart so far. Especially The Knife being in there. Heartbeats is  x 100!

Also, I have the Fatboy Slim remix of Gossip Folks, its about 3:30 mins. Would you like me to upload it?

012 Camille 'Money Note' (#2 of 2008)

A song about the 'Money Note', a part of a song usually regarded as the most dramatic or emotional moment, often when reaching the highest note. As such she parodies the likes of Mariah, Celine and Whitney ("and Dolly Parton wrote it, and Whitney Housten stole it" referring to her cover of 'I Will Always Love You', one of the most well known and more obvious money note's) to perfection. Why this didn't hit the money note and become a massive hit I've no idea, it's so wonderful and truly random, six minutes or pure brilliance that only feels like three. The video is amazing but I don't feel the short version does it justice. Meh, I'll post it below anyway, she's fabulous!

011 Animal Collective 'My Girls' (#2 of 2009)

A year ago I'd heard very little of Animal Collective (one song infact, a short radio edit on a Domino compilation). Their album from the beginning of the year was getting a lot of hype so I had to get it to see if they were worthy of it. They certainly were. This was the first single off it and the most instant for me to begin with, its so incredibly addictive and joyous. I've seen them described as headphone music, and I think that would be a fair judgement. This song sounds so great loud through earphones, all the noises in it make it fantastic. 'Sweet Disposition' and 'The First Days of Spring' (title track of the recent Noah & The Whale Album) come close but there's only one song I've heard all year that's better than this. Coincidentally, this song isn't my favourite on the album....

come to my Asda, I always play it over the speakers at work

I so would. I hope you get people asking what it is. I've spent the whole year waiting for it to become a massive hit. It's just not going to happen is it? :(

Money Note is great, went top 5 in my chart  the parent album's brilliant too, topped my chart no less!

had never heard of it before BJSC if I'm honest though :o

As my #1 songs of 2007 and 2008 it's probably fair to assume they're still to come....

with a bit of a push and Radio 1 a-listing it could easily go top ten in my opinion

it's on iTunes, maybe somebody should perform it on X Factor

I can remember Robyn topping your 2007 chart, had forgotten about Elbow being #1 in your 2008 end of year but seeing as you still have it in your sig I assumed you must still love it
