Hey all!

Yes there's always a risk of me doing these countdowns in the Eurovision off season but thankfully this isn't a huge one, and slightly different hopefully. In anticipation for MelFest over the past few weeks I've been listening to more and more schlager, so for those who aren't totally familiar with pre-2000s Eurovision I thought I'd post some of my very favourites here, in the form of a countdown.

It was originally meant to be a top five but another song came on shuffle on my iPhone literally minutes before I got to the computer so I had to include it!!

You won't find Charlotte Perelli, Hero Bjork or Mans in here...there is no schlager-pop, schlager-rock or (and I'm very cut up about this) schlager-opera in this countdown: it is pure schlager only, so be warned, these six songs are extremely cheesy! I'd say only the hardcore fans will give this the time of day but they are all very very very catchy, and although there is only one song in English, you'll have them going round and round in your head.

They are all females, with an average age (at the time of the songs being made) of 42! Yes the schlager queens tend to be quite old as these songs were probably quite dated even at the time. Four songs are from the 1980s and two are from the 2000s. Two of the songs are Swedish, two are Danish, one is Norwegian and one German.

I'll post the first song shortly...I hope somebody replies

Oh...and one singer appears twice in the countdown! As does one songwriter. Just thought I'd throw that in

6. Kikki Danielsson - Bra Vibrationer

Quite possibly the best title of a Eurovision song ever!! It means Good Vibrations when translated, but really who cares about that! Kikki has participated in Melodifestivalen an astonishing total of nine times and once in Melodi Grand Prix in Norway (so naturally, this isn't the last you'll hear from her in this countdown!), most recently in 2006 where perhaps inevitably she finished last in the final with only 2 points, despite Thomas G:son's contribution. Her recent career has been somewhat overshadowed by problems with alcohol and battles with her weight, but call it a silver lining if you want; she participated in the Swedish version of reality television programme "You Are What You Eat."

Anyway, Bra Vibrationer finished 3rd on home turf in Eurovision 1985, is still extremely popular in Sweden and she still performs the song today. Enjoy!!

Well, looking forward to all the names being revealed, which shouldn't be long now :D

The fact it's ESC downtime probably has something to do with this too...

usually I don't even listen to ESC songs during July-December but I still regularly put on the MF and MGP 2009 CD's, I listen to them far more than the Eurovision compilation if I'm honest...

I've just heard a very MF-like song actually, I reckon it might be one of the songs that was up for contention in 2009 but wasn't picked for the semi-finals...it's 3 minutes exactly, and sounds very much like an MF song, I'm considering sending it to BJSC XXII, but have three other songs I quite fancy sending too

5. Hot Eyes - Det Lige Det

Hot Eyes are Kirsten Siggard and Soren Bundgaard, and entered the Danish Melodi Grand Prix every year from 1983 to 1988. They made Eurovision three times, the first being with this song. The national final performance below is famous in Denmark and indeed for hardcore schlager fans for the gimmick, which unfortunately they weren't able to bring to the Eurovision final in Luxembourg. Still, they came 4th overall.

I love both of these, total 80s classics

There's a difference?! :o

Well for example I'd not call "Hero" or "Invincible" pure schlager, because there's modern pop influences in there.

The lines are blurry obviously but hopefully there won't be much debate about the ones I've included...I think they're pretty extreme :D

4. Wenche Myhre - Alt Har En Mening Nå

One for Jerick now :) Wenche Myhre was born in 1947 and her Eurovision record spans a massive 45 years, attempting to enter the contest for the first time in 1964. Despite numerous attempts for both home country Norway and Germany in the 60s, 80s, 90s and 2000s she has only actually made it to Eurovision once, for Germany in 1968, finishing 6th. She made a comeback to the Norwegian Melodi Grand Prix last year, and although she didn't make it to the final, it was fun to see some genuine old fashioned schlager present in a modern day Eurovision selection.

We all know how the Norwegian selection went last year, and I suppose things would have turned out very differently had this made it to Eurovision, I was just glad this guilty pleasure was in the selection. 62 year old Wenche even had a bit of a dance routine going on!

oh dear  I wasn't a fan of that at all, one of only 3 or 4 I ever skip on the MGP album

just like that disasterous Thorliefs song was one of my least favourite MF songs, hopefully it's not in your top 3!

Haha it's not, but it is definitely one of my guilty pleasures from this year's selection!!

Omg that song is amazing tbh! the lyrics is really cool and.. she is just so wonderful

I really hope we will have some of these in MGP 2010

I love Wenche  Fab song. I want her back next year too, or failing that, Kikki Danielson for MF :kink:

3. Chips - Dag Efter Dag

Next up is a last minute addition to the selection! Chips are Eurovision stalwarts Kikki Danielsson and Elisabeth Andreasson, and were sort of a pre-cursor to the Bobbysocks it seems! They won Melodifestivalen 1982 and went on to come 8th in the final in Harrogate. I loved the catchyness of this instantly! It sort of sounds like pre-Eurovision Abba, except ten years too late!

a couple of these I recognise from that Absolute Schlager album I got in Stockholm! great purchase that was

I guess my mention of Kikki reminded you of that Peter? :kink:

on a separate note, I'm GUTTED this never came out here;

although, since when was My Number One schlager :heehee:
