Posted November 19, 200915 yr an interesting idea, an hour long spectacular paying tribute to the talented carpenters. i only saw half the show, switching over for waterloo road, but those who i saw demonstrated just how bloody GOOD karen carpenter was. they all failed to do their songs any justice, the saturdays were bland (no surprise there then) and if on the radio youd never know it was them!, ronan as ever whined his way through his track, that bint out of the veronicas was AWFUL, bad song choice for someone with no depth to her voice at all, something karen had, and not even chrissie hynde (still looking good ) could rescue the show. the half i saw didnt do the carpenters justice, who at their best were brilliant, built on karens deep, pure vocal ability. but they also produced pop pap... 'mr postman' was awful and 'jambalaya'.
November 19, 200915 yr Only saw the first half and then switched over for Waterloo Road. Some of the ones I saw were awful and what's the point as no-one can match Karen's voice.
November 19, 200915 yr It was predictably grim.... there were few singers who could compare to the "rich white bread" voice of Karen Carpenter...... and their was no one on that show even worthy of being in the same ballpark as even Chrissie Hynde was disappointing ... mind you I agree she looks good for her age.
November 19, 200915 yr Yeah like with X Factor on Saturday the abysmal attempts to sing Freddie songs highlighted just how good Freddie really was and same last night really with Karen Carpenter, no one could hold a candle to her vocally who was on the show
November 21, 200915 yr I was going to watch this originally (for a certain someone) but after hearing how abysmal it was supposed to be, I skipped everyone but Beverley. I may be biased because I'm a huge fan of hers, but I found that it was a good rendition of "We've Only Just Begun". I think it sounds slightly better with the effortless, almost spoken, delivery of Karen but Beverley did it justice. It was always going to be a different sound when you give a soul singer like Beverley a Carpenters song. They both have deep, rich, elements of their voices yet they're totally different. I heard Noisettes and Dionne Warwick (though she did a song she'd sung before the Carpenters?) were supposed to be alright too? I suppose not?
