A wonderful song from the solo-Animal Collective member Panda Bear that deals with his overcoming of substances. WOO. Never has an 'anti-drug' song made me want to do them more, though...still, it's a wonderful experiment with noise and pop mixed into one. An epic track.

You probably think I'm jking with this. I'm absolutely not. Seriously. You're probably thinking that I'm doing this to be IRONIC or HIP. I am NOT. This is a f***ING AMAZING SONG.

No, really, believe me. Lyrically it's just a powerhouse of a song. "Don't you hate a shy bitch? Yeah, I ate a shy bitch. She ain't shy no more, she changed her name to my bitch." Yeah, it's crude. Yes it's vulgar. But that's some really clever wordplay. Something that neither I nor you could do. And the beat is hot seriously.

I know you think Lil Wayne is $h!t because he's RAP, but give it a shot. He gives a pretty hilarious and rewarding experience. He's got a great control over the English language, and the subject matters he raps about makes everything even more LOL worthy and awesome. Seriously, he has song that references GEESE ERECETIONS. Geese! Erections!

Ah, Animal Collective. <3 By far their most accessible yet wonderful and nostalgic track. This brings me back to summerrrr. Lovely times. In general, it's a great composition plus fun, in general. It just puts wonderful thoughts into your head. If you don't like this song, you'll sadly probably never like Animal Collective.

Ah, Xiu Xiu. This band brings out the emo in me, this song in specific. It's really intense and noisy. And emotional. But in a really, really great way. Perfect for sad days / bizarre moods. Xiu Xiu are a bit hard to chew on, but if you can really get into it, it's a rewarding experience.

Ah, one of my favorite 2009 releases. I'm such a Kate Bush nerd that it's not huge surprise that this is here. But it's just a wonderfully made pop song. Khan is a great storyteller, and emotionally this song just has so many high points. Images in mahhh mindddd yerzz. Give it a listen if you STILL have yet to. It's been all over for the whole year.

Ah Rihanna LOL. <3 This song is another one that brings back so many good memories, as I am sure it does for a lot of people reading this. Another one of those universal pop songs that EVERYONE loves and EVERYONE can't get out of their heads. But with good reason. Rihanns sounds so goddamn sincere in this song. It could have easily ended up being cheesy and awful, but something about the way she sings this just makes it heartfelt and one of the greatest pop songs of the century.

Understaded, minimalist, yet incredibly powerful. If you're willing to give a 9 minute opus a try, do it. I still can't get over how good this song is.

Hercules and Love Affair made me love disco again, plain and simple. Antony's vocals are just lush on this, and it's incredible to see the range he can do (especially considering he just charted a few songs up with one of the most HEARTBREAKING songs ever). FUNKY. Give this a listen. as well.

"I ain't here to argue about his facial features / or here to turn atheists into believers." I'm a pretty secure atheist. Yet, for some reason, I adore this song. It's atmosphere is incredible and I admire that it's so openly faithful, however it doesn't feel like he's shoving anything down your throat. If you think Kanye sucks / has no talent, listen to this incredible track. Amazing video, too.

James Murphy's first single was a song parodying hipster attitudes and also self parodying his own internalized fears of losing his 'hipness and constantly worrying over if he was cool or not. Great, great track filled with Murphy's usual humor.

Sleater-Kinney

Jumpers

2005

Sub Pop

This song is intense and heartbreaking. It's about people who commit suicide by jumping off the Golden Gate bridge, and they took the title from a famous article called 'Jumpers' which detailed the events. Around 22 people jump off it every year. People as young as 14 have. One girl, who was around 14/15 and in high school, jumped around the time Sleater-Kinney were writing the song. She left her school during second period, took a taxi to the gate, and jumped immediately. Hence some of the most chilling and amazing lines of the song: "I took a taxi to the gate / I will not go to school again / Four seconds was the longest wait." It takes roughly four seconds to hit the water.

Heartbreaking.

Radiohead

Idioteque

2000

Parlophone

Pretty much sums up the feelings of paranoia and intensity present during the early 21st century. Another incredibly intense song. It deals with the idea of natural disasters, apocalypses, and the fall of man kind ("women and children first / and children first / and"). We were all thinking along these lines after 9/11. The tension between countries was unbelievable around the time. And this song perfectly captures that dark, dark time and is still incredibly relevant today, what with global warming. An incredible song.

After the intensity of the last two songs, this just felt fitting. Because, despite all the $h!t that's gone down in this decade, we're all still here and things are improving. People are optimistic. It's a good thing. And ultimately, this song perfectly sums up every positive emotion or moment in my life. I have vivid memories of listening to this in middle school and even in high school, as well as covering it with friends acoustically at coffee houses. "You all don't wanna hear me; you just wanna dance." Really, it's all we want to do in life (at least most of us). Enjoy ourselves, have a good time, dance. This song is LIFE basically. Love. <3

Don't shake a Polaroid picture though, it could damage the film.

Amaze chart.

Surprised to see "Promise" here. I do like a bit of Ciara and anything black female, but I find it one of her most 'nothing-y' songs. I can listen to it and forget how it went not long later. Perhaps I need to give it more, but it just strikes be as not that good.

Ooft at Brandy, Missy and (to an extent) Beyoncé in the top 10. <3 I think "Crazy In Love" is over rated, but still good, the other two are amazing though.

very R&B top ten :o of the seven songs that I know there, I'm not a great fan of any of them, Hey Ya has been overplayed to the extreme to the point that it completely ruined anything I ever felt for the song :( not that I ever loved it that much in the first place, but I was astonished that something so quirky could be a decade defining worldwide hit! great countdown overall though, very high quality :D
Any chance of posting a full recap.... a very interesting countdown, as I knew you liked a bit of Urban music, but not as much as that.
