Not a fair comparison. There was no iTunes in 2002-2005 and you needed huge airplay (which Britney never had) to reach the top of the charts. Now, you need to sell well on iTunes which makes it easier for popular non-Urban artists (like Britney) to reach good positions in the Hot 100.

Britney used to have great airplay in the beginning of her career, but she lost it once she started the 'Britney' era (which is mostly to blame because of a deal with Clear channel going sour). She started to get it back after Toxic and Everytime were huge radio hits, and then her image affected her radio play up until the Circus era.

 

So I stand by my statement. :P

 

Regardless of itunes, radioplay is the key to longevity in the US... which is what I was getting at.
