Pogues had the physical re-release in 2005/2006 (which went top 3) whilst Mariah was barely selling any downloads until the following year when sales increased so they had a good head start
December 10, 200915 yr xmas 2003 was packed with them looking back wasn't it; Darkness, Bo Selecta, The Idols, Gary Jules had a xmassy video...I'm sure there were a few more too would be nice to see more original xmas songs, by big artists...I really don't understand why more artists don't release them!?! it's kept Roy Wood in the money! Would anyone at all still care about Wizzard if it wasn't for I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday? No! By the same reckoning, if somebody at the height of their career now, like Take That for example, came out with a brilliant original xmas song, it could easily join the 'classic' ranks I really think that a lot of acts don't bother doing anything for xmas anymore because ultimately they know that it's effect will be completely dwarfed by the X Factor and it will go unnoticed :(
December 10, 200915 yr With all the fuss around the "original" and "new" Sugababes, I'm surprised nobody thought of reviving "New Year".

December 10, 200915 yr Some people think that Christmas singles are cheesy. Just look at some of the massive acts from the past that have had hit Christmas Songs Slade - Wizzard - Elton John - Queen - Kate Bush - East 17 - Paul McCartney - Greg Lake - Pogues & Kirsty MacColl - Mariah Carey - 3 different versions of Band Aid etc.

December 10, 200915 yr Every decade there seems to be one big year for Christmas songs...first it was 1973, Slade and Wizzard. Then 1984 had Band Aid, Wham, Frankie Goes To Hollywood, and would have had Shakin' Stevens but that was delayed a year. Then 1994 had Mariah and East 17 (not really a Christmas song but still gets played a lot) and this decade was easily 2003, after which everyone gave up. Best part about that list is seeing Bo Selecta in the top 5 :D

Slade - no way, they had masses of hits and were well established before Christmas 73. The Pogues is a completely different thing. They've been loved for years despite the fact pretty much the only song anyone knows by them is this one. That or the 'Irish Rover' cover...or 'Fiesta' - they know the song just not who does it.

You can say it was 1985 then, because not only Shakin' Stevens was #1 but the top 3 of 1984 (Band Aid, Wham, Paul McCartney) re-entered in the top 10 in 1985.

Theres not much thought going into them nowadays theres only songs that are released at christmas, so some would class them as christmas songs PS love these christmas emoticons
