Posted December 10, 200915 yr iTunes UK has revealed its top-selling albums and singles for 2009, with Kings of Leon taking the album top spot with Only By the Night and the Black Eyed Peas taking the singles crown with I Gotta Feeling. However, the album chart, compiled from downloads from the website over the last year, had some noticeable absences. Reality TV star Susan Boyle, whose performance on ITV’s Britain’s Got Talent led to 100m hits on YouTube, was one of the obvious exceptions. She did not figure in the top 50 album downloads chart. Boyle’s Syco album I Dreamed a Dream sold more than 715,000 copies in its first two weeks of release and sales continue to grow at a speed which may see her become the years’ biggest selling album artist this week. Figures released from the Official Charts Company show that 97% of her album sales were for physical product, compared to 3% of download sales. Other albums missing from the iTunes top 20 chart include JLS by JLS, which has sold 593,999 units so far, Crazy Love by Michael Buble, which has sold 539,553 so far, and 3 Words by Cheryl Cole which sold 382,952. In addition, the editorial team at iTunes UK has announced its choices for the year’s best album and best song for 2009. Deciding from a list of thousands of album and singles released on the music download site over the past year, the London-based team selected two winners. The Invisible by The Invisible won the iTunes best album for 2009 and In for the Kill by La Roux won the best song for 2009 accolade.
