NO STOPPING BOYLE, BUT ALICIA HAS KEYS

Syco/Columbia Crooner To Top Chart for Fourth Week in a Row, Keys at 330-350k

December 16, 2009

The Susan Boyle phenomenon just keeps gathering momentum.

Don’t look now, but her Syco/Columbia album I Dreamed a Dream is on target for another 500-600k next week, which would catapult her well over double-platinum in a month, and keep the Midlands Mama at #1 for the fourth consecutive turn.

Decca’s Andrea Bocelli My Christmas album also remains steady, probably good enough for #2.

Big release this week is J/RMG R&B ruler Alicia Keys’ The Element of Freedom, which includes her version of the Jay-Z hit, “Empire State of Mind.” Based on reports from one-day retailers with egg nog hangovers overdose at the office party, the album is in the 330-350k range.

Star Trak/Interscope’s Robin Thicke is next at 100-110k for his fourth release, Sex Therapy.

CHART PREVIEW

December 18, 2009

No big surprise at the top of the chart next week, as Susan Boyle logs her fourth consecutive week at #1. This is only the second time this year an album has remained at #1 for four consecutive weeks—Taylor Swift's Fearless held onto the top spot for seven consecutive weeks beginning on Dec. 14, 2008. Swift has been #1 a total of seven non-consecutive weeks this year, and 10 non-consecutive weeks overall. As for debuts, the big question is: Will the next two days be strong enough for Alicia Keys that she’s able to catch Andrea Bocelli for #2? With the final weekend before Christmas upon us, next week's chart is a welcome present for the industry. Here's how it looks seven days before the big holiday:

  • Susan Boyle (I Dreamed A Dream) - 600-650k
  • Andrea Bocelli (My Christmas) - 400-420k
  • Alicia Keys (The Element of Freedom) 370-390k (NEW)
  • Taylor Swift (Fearless) - 250-270k
  • Carrie Underwood (Play On) - 130-150k
  • Michael Buble (Crazy Love) - 130-150k
  • Lady GaGa (The Fame) (original & deluxe) - 125-135k
  • Justin Bieber (My World) - 125-135k
  • Glee (Vol 2) - 110-120k
  • Michael Jackson (This Is It) - 110-120k
  • Lady GaGa (The Fame Monster) (EP) 110-120k
  • Robin Thicke (Sex Therapy) - 110-120k (NEW)
  • Glee (Vol 1) - 100-110k
