Posted December 22, 200915 yr How can you reconcile their communist beliefs with their existence on a major label, and doing other things like going to the MTV Awards? I think their music is fairly good (nothing amazing most of the time) but can anyone take their lyrics seriously through this blatant hypocrisy?
December 22, 200915 yr To get their messages across, they need to use mainstream media, otherwise they are not heard. If they formed now rather than 1991 I think with the internet it might of turned out differently.
December 22, 200915 yr Author why did audioslave sign to a major then? they weren't political, but surely the RATM guys, believing so strongly in their politics, would have declined to work on a major?
December 22, 200915 yr How can you reconcile their communist beliefs with their existence on a major label, and doing other things like going to the MTV Awards? They're not "Communist", they're "Revolutionary Marxist", SLIGHT difference..... And, in 1991 they signed to Epic because, as Tom Morello put it at the time "They gave us everything we asked for".... Which obviously included the right to veto "cash-in" compilation albums, because I've yet to see a "Best Of" RATM album being marketed, and I just BET that sticks in Sony's craw right now..... Going to the MTV awards...? Why not, they wanna fukk sh"t up, where better to do it...? Bear in mind that KITN has been an INTERNET ONLY release, also bear in mind that the band have donated all their proceeds to charity, and also bear in mind that they're gonna put on a free gig for us here in London......

I guess it will be or do you have an actual source?
December 22, 200915 yr is it in London? I guess it will be or do you have an actual source? Kinda thought it WAS tbh... I mean, Hyde Park or the 02 would seem the logical choices.....
December 22, 200915 yr Kinda thought it WAS tbh... I mean, Hyde Park or the 02 would seem the logical choices..... Cant see o2 being their sort of venue, it isnt big enough either. Hyde Park would be good, or Wembley Stadium just to spite Louis Walsh for claiming RATM couldnt fill it. but yeah they havent said London just 'UK', would be surprised if it wasnt London though, I cant wait.
December 22, 200915 yr Author Going to the MTV awards...? Why not, they wanna fukk sh"t up, where better to do it...? Care to explain? Climbing on the stage equipment is "sticking it to the man" in the same way Kanye West interrupting Taylor Swift is.

I think their music is fairly good (nothing amazing most of the time) but can anyone take their lyrics seriously through this blatant hypocrisy? It's already been said and it's blatantly obvious that the band would've gone virtually unnoticed without the exposure Epic gave them in the early 90s. Far more people will have heard their message simply because of the exposure they gained. It may be an uncomfortable compromise but to have hundreds of thousands of uninitiated people hearing what you say is better than talking to a few hundred mostly converts.
December 22, 200915 yr Care to explain? Climbing on the stage equipment is "sticking it to the man" in the same way Kanye West interrupting Taylor Swift is. No, it's not sticking it to the man but if it gains headlines then people will pay attention. Some may even learn something.
December 22, 200915 yr Author How about having their music in video games and films? I don't know if that's their decision however, so don't get angry if I'm wrong. It just seems to me they preach about hating capitalism then do everything that non-political bands do. They're as much a part of the "machine" as the next band really... December 22, 200915 yr tbh They are on Tony Hawk games, who wouldnt want to be? It basically moulded my music taste. as for part of the machine... Is this way Tom Morello co-runs organisation Axis of Justice, and why Zack de La Rocha has lived and thought with the Zapatista's? I could list you more things but I cba, but RATM cant do all these things just because they are a product of the machine, because they arent.
December 28, 200915 yr It's already been said and it's blatantly obvious that the band would've gone virtually unnoticed without the exposure Epic gave them in the early 90s. It may be an uncomfortable compromise but to have hundreds of thousands of uninitiated people hearing what you say is better than talking to a few hundred mostly converts. Exactly, RATM were/are a LOT bigger than Dead Kennedys (a band with a similar "Anti Establishment" ethos), Epic helped them get that big... I think that RATM have more proved through their actions and their message that they're not just the "next band".... Public Enemy signed up to Rick Rubin's Def Jam/Def American/American records in the mid-80s, a big label who certainly helped PE get their message out there and they certainly never compromised their politics either... System of a Down signed to Rubin's label too.... All three of these bands have used their fame and the exposure they got in a positive way, that's the bottom line....
January 2, 201015 yr I don't see what is wrong with a band wanting to get their music across to the buying public? They only want people to hear their music!!
January 2, 201015 yr Author yeah but when someone like Ian Mackaye talks about not liking corporations I can take it more seriously than Tom "I released non-political music udner a mjaor with Audioslave but trust me I really hate corporations!" Morello.
