Oh dear I thought the show was awful, it's like a pantomime with Lawrence and Meatloaf on the judging panel, the show is really tacky. Darius sung well but I wish he wasn't involved :(

exactly what I thought last night.

But he's committed and he is learning new techniques :)

...it's not doing my blood pressure any good :(

Oh, I'm too old for all this.It was like PI all over again. I don't know how Darius can stand it, my nerves can't ! Loved Darius but didn't like the show. Can't stand Meatloaf. What on earth is he there for? Danny will probably win beause he has the biggest fanbase. So glad D didn't go out this week, it would have been so unfair. We just need lots of people to vote. My husband will also go mad when the phone bill arrives. :o Sue
I thought Meatloaf spoilt it, he was your face all the time. It needs pruning. Id get rid of meatloaf and alan titchmarsh. It wasnt as tacky as I expected being it was on ITV but BBC doing it would be better. Also the kids screaming in the audience got on my nerves, one got the feeling that if their hero sang the telphone book they would still be screaming.

I think the singers have worked really hard and so have the mentors.

I just didn't think the presenters or judges were right.

...and not keen on the idea but as I said last post....he's committed now and learning new techniques.

They have a lot of hard work to do next week :o

Darius did really well tonight. Thought he looked and sounded great!

No doubt Danny will do well, but I thought he was the weakest singer - apart from Alex!

I think Darius will relax a lot more from now on. He now knows he hasn't lost all his fans. He wasn't in the bottom two.

He looked very stressed about the whole thing but he kept it very tightly together when it mattered. Did you see his face when Meat Loaf was critiquing him.

If it was anything like last night in the studio there was a lot of noise and it was difficult to hear what was being said

He looked as though he thought Meatloaf was really putting him down. I liked the look of relief when he realised he wasn't. I thought most of them had improved since last night. Darius' singing at the very beginning wasn't as good - he was concentrating on the camera - as he would normally have to do. When he gathered himself, it was good. His performance was better though - he listened to the critique and it was no longer bland. Maybe not as good technically but better over all.

Vanessa sounded as though she just hadn't put the work in which is such a shame as she has a good voice.

I'm glad Alex went - and I think he was as well.

I think this program is terrible, not the fact of the subject, that is a good idea - but unlike other programs where someone is learning something, it seems rushed - there is no substance to the mentoring, no behind the scenes of the show, seeing what it actually takes to learn these songs..

6 programs, I just feel it is a wasted opportunity, when some shows go on for ever, this one seems hasty as if its a bit of fluff - and it could be so much more interesting, after all you have a famous tennor there..havent seen him doing much mentoring, I would like to learn something of the operatic techniques etc..but it feels like a hasty show for votes.

Danny will win, as said, he could stand and make funny faces and still the screaming and mass voting. I actually thought he was as bad if not worse than Alex, at least Alex made it entertaining, hubby agreed - oddly he thought vanessa was good- and Darius was OK, he liked JImmys performance best . I thought Vanessa was very raspy and breathless. but she obviously had a heavy pop schedule

and of course the pantomine antics of the sore throat etc of Kym, and the trouble they were all having..

and Meatloaf - ADD or what. I was worried he would reak havoc at the beginning

I wonder what songs they will have next week, after all they used the most iconinc ones, to give Dairus that tenor nessa dorma - phew, the range in that song is impossibley difficult, and it is so well known as sung by such huge tennor operatic names, Darius did really well tbh

I agree. They should maybe have split them into females and males over two shows like DOI and Strictly and really have taken you behind the scenes with nobody going out. I'm sure young singers would have liked to have seen for example the trick of singing doing sit ups that Danny talked about or shoving your fist in your mouth for vibration like Darius.

In the third show they could have sung the arias you'd seen them working on and then had a public vote.

I know. Such a huge aria only works in a tenor key or tenor-baritone range. It loses its impact transposed, no matter how well it is sung. What were they thinking? It's as if they had a little list of recognisable pieces from ads etc. all ready before they had their list of participants complete.

Toreador is just as well known and much more suited to Darius's range.

I also thought it was ridiculous to give Marcella Casta Diva which some trained opera sopranos can't handle. For me, they were the two with most potential but it was obvious they'd all taken the work seriously. It showed. Alex has to get kudos for his original performance with air guitar.

I wish someone would step in and shut the audience up while the singers are actually singing. I hated screaming etc. going on when Darius used to sing a soft emotional sung accompanied only by his guitar. It spoiled the moment and the audience last night ruined the show for me. i was so glad they announced Danny was through first.

video of all the performances is up on itvs opstar site

Darius attempts Paverotti

oh and I have no idea what the song Darius sung is about - as I have only heard it in another language,

to me most of these songs when sung in english have the most mindane lyrics..is it a sad song, or defiant? that is what I saw in the performance, but can only guess - I have seen Paverotti belting it out so got no idea of what the song conveyed. and heard it over football

Darius now seems to be not considered for a win. Obviously the bookies see how voting will be by fan base so I don't blame them.

McFly star 4/1 favourite to win ITV show Popstar to Opera Star

Friday 15th January – Boylesports have opened a market on who will win ITV’s latest reality/talent show ‘Popstar to Opera Star’, with Danny Jones from McFly the 4/1 favourite.

The program will see eight established popstars battle it out to become an opera performer and the firm are offering 5/1 that Vanessa White from girl band the Saturdays will go all the way, whilst former Blur bassist Alex James is the outsider at 10/1. The celebrities will receive coaching from mezzo-soprano Katherine Jenkins and tenor Rolando Villazon throughout the series, which kicks off this evening.

“I’m really looking forward to this latest take on the celebrity talent show and it’ll be interesting to see how the group can deal with the demands singing opera puts on their voices,” says Nicola McGeady, Boylesports Entertainment Spokesperson. “Some of the contestants have built fantastic pop careers with limited talent so I can’t wait to find how they get on – it should make for some entertaining TV.”

Popstar To Opera Star – Outright Winner

Danny Jones 4/1

Vanessa White 5/1

Marcella Detroit 11/2

Jimmy Osmond 6/1

Kym Marsh 6/1

Bernie Nolan 7/1

Darius Campbell 7/1

Alex James 10/1

sad, regretful and defiant - Darius did his job if that's what you picked up.

Who cares what a bookmaker thought yesterday before they'd sung a note?

Tbh, even we know Darius won't win unless lovers of good music and singing vote in sufficient numbers to outweigh the huge fanbases. How likely is that?

Edited by Baytree

well their odds on Vanessa werent correct were they.

I think everyone assumes Danny will win, its a fan thing, good luck to him, all the more raised for the charity - all well and good, and what do they gain from actually winning? its just a point to the program to get competition going on votes.

Having said that as soon as they mention ..may be voted out. you cant help but vote can you, .

I only voted for Darius last night because I'd no idea what the viewing demographics were like. In future I'd like to vote for any other outstanding ones too. I would have given Marcella a vote and also JImmy because he doesn't have the strongest voice but he sang really charmingly.

ah ha, well Darius did his job then! especially is the song is usually sung lower, so inevitably loses its well known sound if the range is changed!!!

I wonder what the viewing figures are for the progam?

I thought the programme was good and of course Darius was great and can't wait till next week
