I'll settle for him being comfortable with the music and letting his feelings show in that.

Thanks. That Christmas wishes video was beginning to look a bit out of place on his website. This is much more appropriate.

Another review but Loose Women this time.

Popstar To Operastar #13 - Loose Women

This lunchtime, Popstar To Operastar contestant Darius Campbell appeared on the ITV lifestyle show Loose Women (watch it again here). He spoke with articulation about his experience on the show, weighted/diluted sensibly for this audience:

... we live in a temperate region of the world that can be quite cold... and we owe it to ourselves and to one another to be warm and expressive in our daily lives.

and responded with discretion to Lesley Garrett's typically straight-down-the-line assessment of the production team getting him to sing a tenor 'song' (Nessun Dorma, from Puccini's Turandot) when he is 'clearly a bass-baritone'.

As an aside, it was surprisingly good to see Lesley Garrett talking about this. One forgets that she was the original classical-to-the-masses artist, pre-dating both Russell 'The Voice' Watson and Charlotte Church. She is also the only classical crossover artist to have actually sung roles in staged productions. Her absence from the show's panel is (relatively speaking) a regretful omission.

thanks, good to read - makes a change.

I actually respect Leslie Garratt's opinions more than Katherine Jenkins. Why wasnt she involved?? perhaps she coudnt face Meatloaf

Just thought I would post a youtube vid of hopefully D's next song :) It's wonderful to have so many informed, intelligent people on this forum( god I wish I were one), but if there are any more bozo's like me, who didn't know what The Toreador sounded like just from the title without hearing it, here it is, with helpful basic English translation too :)

If this is indeed his next performance, I feel it's a song D could absolutely nail, so I'll keep my fingers crossed :yahoo:

I would say the same, but I didn't realise I was familiar with so many arias, though granted they are choosing the most widely known ones so far.

Thanks for the video link. He's a great bass baritone but I don't feel as comfortable listening to this particular aria because his French is so heavily accented.

The thing is this aria needs to be virtually complete to build up the excitement of the festival and the bullfight. Last week on Popstar to Operastar they were cut to one and a half minutes. It will lose all its impact.

Perhaps from after the first choral section until the second choral section - they'll have a bit more time without the intro. That section is about the best known.

A Darius tweet

Really enjoyed Loose Women yesterday, those girls are great fun and very naughty!!Anyway,in rehearsals today ahead of round 2 on Friday...D x

BT please don't highlight any more of my ignorance than is absolutely necessary :D

Do you think D could do it better than this guy then?

Frankly, no. I'm sue Darius will make progress and put in a good performance but what you have there is one of the most renowned bass baritone opera singers (yes he has done full operas) in the world. He has a very distinctive voice and style. It's only because I'm so familiar with French that I hear the strength of his own accent. It doesn't bother me when he sings in any other language.

There's a version of the toreador song sung by a French speaker somewhere on youtube which isn't as operatic as this.

Thanks BP for your post and I loved the video of Darius from Friday, he sounds so excited. Thanks Delphi.

Whilst traveling home this afternoon I was tuned into the local radio station and caught a panel of people discussing PSTOS. There was no mention of how hard everyone must have worked to achieve that standard of performance, oh no, somebody happened to say they thought Darius might win and suddenly they is this big discussion on why he has changed his name, followed by one derogatory comment after another, ending with 'feel the love in the room'.The presenter had the cheek to say she knew nothing about the name change but carried on after a break with her comments and ending with telling him to 'get a life'. Why does he provoke this reaction in some people? Needless to say a suitable email has been sent to the radio station. Sue
