Right, I'm gonna do something different for my end of year countdown this year. Usually I'd work it out on points from weeks spent on my chart. But this year I've done it a little different, basing it on chart runs and my Last.FM top 500 played songs of 2009. This means a song didn't have to be a single or chart for it to be included here if I've played it enough.

The points system explained a little:

The charts points were worked out as a multichart usually would (40 pts. for a #1 etc.) but I worked it out by combining all my charts. Then for the 'airplay' side of it, I picked all of the songs from 2009 (or 2009 albums in the UK e.g. Lady GaGa/Little Boots/Keri tracks that were leaked/released in 2008 are included) and multiplied their playcount by 10. Then I added it to their chart points. I didn't do the airplay bit for songs released in 2008 to try and keep the focus on 2009 songs.

For example: If a song entered my last chart of 2009 at #2 (39 points), but had already accumulated 40 plays on my iTunes (400 points), it'd get 439 points in this chart. ^_^

Got it? Good.

98. Lady GaGa – Bad Romance [38-25-16-11-06-03-01-01] [8 wks.] 377 (227/150)

99. Noisettes – Don't Upset The Rhythm [34-22-17-15-17-18-18-21-27-31-39-OUT] [11 wks.] 372 (192/180)

100. Röyksopp – Happy Up Here [31-16-14-12-13-20-26-35-OUT] [8 wks.] 371 (161/210)

At the foot of the top 100 we have a, perhaps unexpected, appearance from Röyksopp with "Happy Up Here". It's a pretty uplifting almost-instrumental. Noisettes at #99, a song that I think I under rated because it was over rated. :s My current #1, Lady GaGa, sneaks in along with another current charter, Ellie Goulding. Both would have done better if released earlier in the year. Songs that reached #7 in my chart, but didn't stick around, from Jade and the Freemasons also appear. Jade would have been a bit higher on airplay if I'd played the original version a little bit more, it's airplay points here are from the version featuring Bashy. The superior version of "The Climb" makes #96, a song I thought I'd have played a little more actually.

The first songs to appear, without charting, are "100%" by Beverley Knight and "She Ain't Got..." by LeToya, both great for different reasons. The production on "100%" is divine and the song itself is rather classy. In contrast, LeToya's song is much more of an uptempo and a bit of a trashy guilty pleasure. I'm not familiar with any of her previous material, but I knew she was an ex-Destiny's Child member, so a combination of Jark, Jonjo and Aled raving over this and "Not Anymore" made me decide to check it out. So glad I did, I love the album, but this is the highlight.

Featured in the video is the song at #91, "Turned To Stone", also from "100%". This is also an album track, but it charted for two weeks after the album was released as I found it one of the strongest cuts from the album. It took me a while to get used to the gospel style chorus, but I love how this song sounds uplifting, but the lyrics are telling a different story. Check it out.

90. Keri Hilson – Energy [15R(42)-11-14-22-32-OUT] [5 wks.] 421 (111/310)

Well isn't this just the height of variety?! Half of the this group is made up by Keri Hilson and Britney Spears! "Circus" looks to have had a chart run that doesn't tell the truth of how much I like it, being the least played song in the top 100 with only 13 plays. "Radar" does well to make it, seeing as I first fell in love with it in 2007 and wanted it to be released over "Break The Ice". It's a shame she left this so long to be released, it would have been a big #1 in my chart, had she released it late 2007/early 2008.

Keri Hilson's entries are made up of "Energy", a song I first charted in 2008 (where it peaked at #6) but makes the countdown due to remix/albums plays and album tracks "Alienated" and "Tell Him The Truth". I've selected the former as the 'featured video' of this section, but my favourite changes frequently, both are lovely ballads that struck a chord with me a great deal, great enough to make the top 90 without charting. "Alienated" is really quite something though, I'd advise it to any R&B fan who hasn't heard it.

Other songs here come from moderate hits by Pussycat Dolls and Katy Perry (funnily enough, Katy is mentioned in said PCD song), a beautiful flop from P!nk, a dreamy ("Kylie Minogue - The One"-esque) one from Saint Etienne and a soft release from Chew Lips. I was hoping Chew Lips would appear on the Sound Of 2010 list, they seem great so far, check that one out as well.

Oh, so you did actually realise Bad Romance was amazing in the end then? :smoke:

Yes. I have Buzzjack-itis, meaning every Lady GaGa song has to eventually go to #1 in my chart. :(

75. Shontelle – Battle Cry [27-16-06-09-12-16-23-28-33-OUT] [9 wks.] 479 (199/280)

76. Little Boots – Symmetry [DNC] 470 (0/470)

77. Shontelle – T-Shirt [26-12-08-03-03-06-08-14-17-21-29-38-OUT] [12 wks.] 467 (307/160)

78. Paloma Faith – Stone Cold Sober [28-08-05-04-10-12-16-25-30-37-OUT] [10 wks.] 465 (235/230)

79. Beverley Knight – Moneyback [DNC] 460 (0/460)

80. Little Boots – Meddle [DNC] 450 (0/450)

Two tracks from Little Boots here. You've got, Phil Oakey duet, "Symmtery" which instantly stood out as an album highlight (with it's whooshy electroness and amazingly cliché lyrics) and the older track, "Meddle". The former makes it because of combined plays of the original and the lovely Designer Drugs mix, which I have linked to. Neither of them charted this year (though "Meddle" peaked at #18 after a 'soft release' in 2008) but Victoria has been a major part of my iTunes library this year, so they both chart highly.

Another song that appears, without charting, is "Moneyback". I'll be honest, it's one of my least favourite on the album now, it mostly made it this high because Beverley gave away the demo (practically two thirds of the final version) back in late March and obtained a load of scrobbles from that. (the first proper new Bev since 2007, can you blame me?)

Shontelle also has two entries, you see, I was actually really fond of her before. (why'd ya do it to me? ;_;) Actually, I still love her album. "Battle Cry" rightfully becomes her highest song in this chart, it underperformed in my chart, but shone (aha) on my plays. "T-Shirt" achieved the reverse of this. Their chart runs would have been better swapped imo, "T-Shirt" is so much more generic than the rather lovely "Battle Cry".

"T.O.N.Y.", "My Life Would Suck Without You", "S.O.S. (Let The Music Play)" and "Stone Cold Sober" all appear in this batch. They all seem to have been songs that got as high as the top 5 in my chart but, for different reasons, didn't stay around for so long. Perhaps it was because they all followed a similar pattern in the real chart, only "T.O.N.Y." didn't chart at all. In fact, I've included (a LQ version) of the official video as the featured video of this section, simply because it's practically impossible to find. Something you have to see to believe it exists. They're all extremely different, but great tracks anyway.

The highest in this group is "Telephone". The highlight from "The Fame Monster". Let's just say this'll be one to watch. I love it so much that it's made my end of decade shortlist. Amazing.

Hoping to see some actual SOLO males in 'the Top 40 :smoke: Otherwise it'd make you Year End Chart SEXIST. :(

A pretty chart friendly section, all but one was at least a minor chart hit, some major. Unfortunately for them, the only wasn't a hit is the highest one in this list (and the featured video), a collaboration between Röyksopp and Robyn. You'd be forgiven for not hearing it, but it's been unavoidable on Buzzjack, at least in the BJSC forum. (where it won a contest and was also voted the best entry of the year) It's a spine tingling track that was, unfortunately, ignored and I think this may have affected my chart run for it. I can't explain why it only made #7 otherwise, at least my plays made up for it.

Speaking of songs that under peaked here, "Bulletproof" and "Say It" both suffered. The former for being released in a tough period and the other for being held back for months. I usually dislike La Roux, but "Bulletproof" was an anomaly, being one of the few tracks she sings normally on. "Say It" was great, but I grew tired in the end. It's the sort of thing the Sugababes should have recorded instead of "Get Sexy". (which is still to come, so maybe not?)

Keri Hilson pops back, with a track I under rated in my chart as it was slightly dwarfed by my love of her next single. VV Brown appears with an uplifting track, that most saw as her best, but it didn't click with me in the same way. She still has a track to come. Black Eyed Peas also have another track to come, but "Meet Me Halfway" makes #66. I was glad to see it picked as a single choice, the amount of Fergie on the track made it stand out as an album highlight. Flo Rida, with the help of Wynter Gordon, made one of my worst 1999 songs into more of my thing and scored a top 5 hit in my chart. Wynter has such sexy vocals, I can't wait for her to finally get her own record out. Britney Spears has her highest entry this year at #62 with "If U Seek Amy". It's such a fun sounding song but, eventually, the novelty kicks in and it got a bit tiring. But that seems to be the general theme for me and Britney.

Alicia Keys features on the two tracks at #64 and #65. At #65 we have her comeback single, a track that has been stuck at #2 in my chart for 5 weeks so far, 4 of them in 2009. This beautiful track would be a lot higher if it were released earlier in the year. Gotta love a bit of AK on the piano. The higher track is the anthemic Jay-Z single, "Empire State Of Mind". I've gone through a cycle with this. At first it blew me away, then it got old. But when it left my chart, my love for it was revitalised by the beautiful Alicia-only version on her album. A bit disappointed that "Run This Town" is yet to come, this is much better.

All of them haha! Although I have gone off La Roux & Black Eyed Peas majorly recently. And I prefer Alicia Keys' 'Empire State Of Mind pt. II' tbh.

I love your commentaries as well, so well thought out. Looking forward to seeing the rest. ^_^

All of them haha! Although I have gone off La Roux & Black Eyed Peas majorly recently. And I prefer Alicia Keys' 'Empire State Of Mind pt. II' tbh.

I love your commentaries as well, so well thought out. Looking forward to seeing the rest. ^_^

Yay! Thanks for commenting. ^_^

Yeah, "Bulletproof" is pretty much the only La Roux song I like and "I Gotta Feeling" being so huge is almost enough to put me off BEP. I still like "Meet Me Halfway" and "Boom Boom Pow" though. I rate both versions pretty equally, though the original needed hers to get me back into it. I do love her version at the moment.

Aww thanks, I always wonder if people actually read them.

Even though I rate most of your BJSC entries for some reason I didn't think I'd like that much in here, but unsurprisingly I do!

I expect the amount will decrease as it gets to the higher ends, it's probably the stuff I love the most that you're not keen on!

Good to see you liking a fair amount. It could be forgiven for missing out that Bloc Party track, it was a bit of a "did that happen?" release. :( I think it's probably my favourite song by them, should have done better in my chart.

This is probably the last bunch of ten that shows a wide (ish) range of variety from me. A foreign language track, an all male track, rap, M.I.A., Bat For Lashes and my usual Pop/R&B tastes.

At #60 is P!nk, with "Sober". It took me until I saw her live, where it was performed on trapeze, to really appreciate this track. The emotion of her voice really shines through. Another track that should have peaked higher is "Paparazzi", but it suffered from being released far too long after I'd got the album. It's still my favourite from the original album, but it's her lower than two of them here.

Jennifer Hudson, Jay-Z and The Veronicas all have their highest entries here. Earlier I said I preferred "Empire State Of Mind" to "Run This Town", but the level of sheer attitude on this track is still amazing. Rihanna's whiny vocals just killed it off a bit soon. Two places lower, at #55, is Jennifer Hudson's follow up to "Spotlight", a song that was always going to be hard to follow. It didn't do too well in the chart, but it made #3 in mine. Personally I think "Pocketbook" would have been the best choice to follow up, but this was a nice enough track. The Veronicas finally decided to unleash themselves properly on the UK with a 2007 track last year, followed by a 2005 one. Good one girls. It worked the first time, at least, and "Untouched" was a smash. It's hard not to like really, much like the girls, though I prefer "This Love".

This section also contains my first #1 with the majority of its chart run (it charted at #32 for one week in 2008) with Kevin Rudolf. Out of my 51 #1 songs, this remains to be the only one to feature no female vocals. I still love it, makes me do a little dance, haha. For someone I initially hated, Lil Wayne really adds something with his rap as well. This isn't the last time he appears on this countdown. Speaking of someone who'll be back later, Mariah appears at #54. Technically this is a 2008 song, it had a separate top 10 run and 7 weeks of charting in 2008, before it climbed back up in 2009 to reach a peak of #5. The reason for its climb was down to the Jody den Broeder edit, which has built up its 32 plays from 2009. I can hardly listen to the original anymore, it sounds like it should have always been a dance song. I've linked to the remix, if anyone's interested.

Others songs that I've linked to are "Daniel", "Manos Al Aire" and "O... Saya". "Daniel" was a minor hit last year, while there others made no impact on the charts. All three are lovely songs. Bat for Lashes was someone I always felt I should listen to, so I was eager to hear "Daniel", and it didn't disappoint with its haunting vocals and beautiful production. "Manos Al Aire" was much more of a surprise though. I don't like foreign songs and it'd be generous to say I liked Nelly Furtado, but I LOVE "Manos Al Aire". Apart from the title, I have no idea what the lyrics are. It could be a racist chant for all I know, but it sounds so uplifting and I love singing along with my made up lyrics. Lastly, the featured video, from Slumdog Millionaire. "O... Saya" makes it strictly from me playing it. I think this is where the system is flawed as I've only played 10 songs on the whole list more than this and it's only #51. OH WELL. Anyway, I can't explain my love for this song. Everything about it is amazing. The build-up to M.I.A.'s part especially. <3 Listen if you haven't. NOW.

Oh yes, that must have gone over my head last night, fixed. This list is a bit messy because some are made from Last.FM tags, others from my chart, that was a Last.FM one. It used to be playable if you tagged it as just M.I.A.

Agreed, they're probably the three I'd be most inclined to play at the moment from that section.

50. Mariah Carey – I Want To Know What Love Is [29-27-21-14-10-07-05-05-09-14-19] [11 wks.] 581 (290/291)

Well, quite a well known batch here, lots of the Buzzjack blockbusters. Lady GaGa has her last two entries here, "Just Dance" slightly edging "Poker Face" by one point. Both of them did well in my chart last year, they're great songs, but their plays let them down as I'd already had the album since the day it leaked.

One of my stars this year has to be Little Boots. "Earthquake" gets this high with only 8 weeks on my chart in 2009. By the time it came around to charting it, I'd already overplayed it, but it was never my favourite track of hers, hence it's peak at #4. My love for it was rejuvinated after seeing her live, she was really sweet and good to watch. The performance of this was particularly great, she used her laser harp! :o Mariah is also particularly great, but her cover of "I Want To Know What Love Is" was disappointing by her standards. It 'only' makes #50 here, not bad for a song I've always hated though, just a bad single choice.

There's also a quartet of #3 hits in this batch. The lowest here is the third single from Alesha's album, "Let's Get Excited". This song is a lot of fun, like Alesha, I always think I'm bored of it until I put it on. Next is the gorgeous "New York" from Paloma Faith. At first I wasn't sure what to think of this, I much preferred "Stone Cold Sober", but it grew and grew and it's easily her best song now. Then there's "Battlefield", it sounded like a song of the year contender on first listen, but it wore off pretty quickly. I've gone full circle now, it still sounds pretty epic when I play it. Lastly we have the unlikely (and possibly Sugababes-ruining) collaboration between Tinchy Stryder and Amelle. When I first heard it the chorus and production sounded huge, it was bound be be massive. I actually thought it'd be one of the year's biggest hits, but his N-Dubz collaboration outsold it. :( But not here!

Speaking of Sugababes-ruining, the last 'proper Sugababes' single makes it to #47 here. "Get Sexy" was a bit of a slow-grower-quick-dropper with me. When I first heard it I thought it signalled the end of the Sugababes sounds, where were the harmonies? It sounded like Amelle featuring Keisha and Heidi, not a group. It eventually grew, but I still resented it a bit. Then I heard "About A Girl" and faith was restored...then Keisha was kicked out. Just above the Sugababes at #46, from play counts alone, is a much better club-feel track by three random girls. (Keri Hilson, Keyshia Cole and Trina) When I saw the line up for this song, I knew I'd fall in love with it and it was so much better than I expected. I know it's a played out word, but it has tons of swagger, I love the beat and the clapping throughout the song. Fabulous. Play it.
