I live in Australia but I follow politics quite closely, has anyone considered voting for Liberal Democrat in the upcoming election? If so or if not, why?

No as they're an irrelevance and have no chance of forming a Government. A Lib-Dem vote then is a wasted vote. Plus their leader is a nobody. The Conservatives will form the next Government with a good majority and the Lib Dems will have fewer seats than they have now.

^And there's a high chance there'll be a hung parliament, meaning the Lib Dems will get an influence in government (albeit limited).

Yes, I'm probably going to vote for them... they're who I'm closest to ideologically, and although I don't particularly like Clegg, the party is still a lot better than either Labour/Tories right now.

How are they irrelevant? Which was the only mainstream party to oppose the Iraq war? Which party leader was calling for reform of the MPs' expenses system in 2008? Which party was calling for action on climate change ten or more years ago? Which party runs most of the major English cities?

I very much doubt that there'll be a hung parliament. Mark my words, the Tories will have a working majority. :)

They're irrelevant because without Proportional Representation, which I'm totally against, they will never become the party with an overall majority or most seats and hence form a Government.

If you asked 100 people to name the present Lib-Dem leader then I doubt a third could do so.

So what? Are you seriously suggesting that it would have been a good thing if the people who opposed the Iraq war had no party in Parliament expressing their views? Most bands will never have a number one single. Does that make them irrelevant as well?

I won't bother asking why you oppose PR because I doubt you'd come up with a coherent argument against it.

PR works North of the boarder just fine.

I'll be voting Lib Dem at the next election, former leader Sir Ming Campbell is my MP. The Lib dems have held the seat in NE Fife for decades, everyone round here votes for them 1] because they are the best party and 2] too keep out the torries. Damn land owners love the torries, Labour is a wasted vote, nobody gives a $h!t about independence as their is a RAF camp in the consitituancy so the SNP don't get a look in.

It's far from a wasted vote they are the 3rd party, which suggests that in the event of a hung parliament they are the ones with the power.

A wasted vote would be for the SNP. I haven't quite understood why a party that wants independance is chasing after votes for westminster. They should be concentrating on not f***ing up the country further than they already have

They're the third biggest party in the UK, therefore any parties with even less votes are, by your definition, a wasted vote. So why did you once vote for the BNP?

Oh I only voted for them at the last GE for a laugh really!! It's not a crime anyway as they'r a legal political party.

Doubt I'll even vote this time and I've never voted in Euro or local elections.

Please don't vote then - what sort of f***ing arsehole votes BNP for "a laugh"?

I've voted Lib Dem at every opportunity for the last fourteen years and will continue to do so as long as their policies reflect my thoughts. At least they've remained consistent - New Labour and the Tories are virtually interchangeable - when one says white, the other says black and vice versa.

Some current poll results would return a very small Tory majority at the moment but this will be shortened by the time of election and I have no doubt we will have a hung parliament. Thank Christ...a government with a strong majority is a dangerous thing - what is the point in Parliamentary debate when the whip dictates you follow the party line regardless of your viewpoint? A hung parliament demands debate, demands compromise and will hopefully result in sensible leglislation.

I know it's off topic here, but for a politician, Nick Clegg is pretty good-looking.

That disturbs me slightly :P

Anyhow, when I finally get to vote (2 more years) I'll definitely be voting for the Liberal Democrats, despite living in a heavily conservative area, I feel that their manifesto is the strongest, followed closely by Labour, based on upbringing I should vote Conservative, but I think some of the reforms they plan to make, particularly in education, are just poor.

There will be a Cameron majority of at 100-150 IMHO, there is more and more discontent with Labour by the day and still another 4 months of Brown's regime left so 4 months of mass unchecked immigration, 4 months of stealth taxes, 4 months of bumbling and dithering, 4 months of dead soldiers (not that that will change under Cameron but each dead soldier weakens Brown)

As for the Lib Dems they are just a protest vote really, a political irrelevance who will never have any real influence and are more heavy taxing than even Labour are although I agree with them over Iraq/Afghanistan

Hate Labour ? vote Tory, hate Tory ? vote Labour

I predict a Tory majority of 60-80. Could even be that B.A. is right thought and it's 100-150.

Precisely the dim, short-sighted view I cannot stand. This is the only rule to follow.

READ THE POLICIES OF YOUR LOCAL CANDIDATES AND THE PARTIES THEY STAND FOR AT LARGE AND VOTE FOR THE ONE WHO WILL BEST REPRESENT YOUR VIEWS IN PARLIAMENT

Lib Dems are an irrelevance, in my lifetime they will not hold a position of power of an sort I can confidently predict that
