Posted July 4, 200619 yr ESC Today: Aussie-born singer tops poll Belgian fans vote: Anita Lixel! Visitors to belgovision.com have voted Anita Lixel as their favourite candidate to fly the flag for Belgium at the Eurovision Song Contest in Helsinki next year. Australian-born Antia beat acts Maria del Rio, Jess, Silvano and Yel to be the fans' favourite fantasy candidate for Helsinki. Speaking to belgovision.com, the flamboyant artist dubbed 'Belgium's Kylie' reacted enthusiastically "I think it's pretty cool that I won. I thought Lordi this year were pretty rocking!" But is a participation in Belgium's Eurosong on the cards? "I haven't really thought about it", continues Anita. "It could be pretty fun!" Australians at Eurovision If Anita made it to Helsinki, she would be following in the footsteps of fellow antipodeans Olivia Newton-John, Gina G, and more recently Jane Comerford (of Germany's Texas Lightning), who all stepped forward for countries other than their own at the Eurovision Song Contest. Until the EBU gives a green light to Australian participation - a issue which was very seriously and hotly debated in the 1990s - adopting another country at the contest offers an attractive platform for Aussie singers to reach a European audience. Fans keen to see the singer in action can watch Anita performing on 15th July at the Dour festival in Belgium, and will also have a live set at Brussels les Bains on Friday 28th July.
