Hello guys

I'm afraid I've set up one of those Facebook chart campaign things that are bothering some of you so much. I'm guessing some of you will think this is interesting, some of you will think it irritating, and that nearly all of you will tell me it's doomed to epic failure.

This is it:

But, I'm concerned about something I really hope some of you might be able to advise me on. I've been assuming that if a track was purchaseable from, say, iTunes, that any sales would automatically count towards the chart (if they were in sufficient numbers, obviously). However I have just received an email from an artist asking if I am including albums too (I'm not) because he has an album for sale there and "the distribution deal included chart registration".

So three questions really -

- Does this mean that "chart registration" will also need to have been undertaken separately for every track we choose? Or if a track sells lots there, does it automatically count for the chart?

- If chart registration is a separate thing, does anyone know how *likely* it is that a given track from an artist on a tiny label or who's submitted the track themselves has been chart registered? ie should I expect to see loads on there that aren't already chart-registered?

- If a track *isn't* already chart-registered, how easy or difficult is it to do that, once a track is already purchaseable there?

edit: Doing a bit of internet research I've established people need to be registered with the ppl repertoire database, formerly catco. So I've established that much. Any more advice anyone can offer much appreciated.

Apologies in the event of success to anyone who absolutely hates my project anyway.

What a strangely worded question.

There is NO such thing as chart registration.

If you buy a single from an official download site it counts(There are a few OCC clauses but they are unlikely to apply). Buy enough of the singles and it will chart.

If anyone buys an album that goes to the album chart, if you buy the single from an album that goes to the single chart.

All rather simple.

Does that answer the above questions?

Hi Ricky. It would be a great answer to my questions, it would make everything far easier, but it seems to contradict the information I found this morning.

http://www.theofficialcharts.com/infopack.php :

"Chart Rules - Ensure that your release complies with the chart rules for both physical and digital formats

Registering Formats - You must ensure that you register your physical formats with Millward Brown and your digital formats need to be registered with CatCo [Catco is the old name for ppl - Wes]. This is to ensure that all sales are tracked and allocated to your release correctly."

http://www.ppluk.com/en/Record-Companies/repertoire/ :

"Benefits of PPL Repertoire Database

...2.Your digital releases will be available for inclusion in the Official UK Charts... "

I've emailed both the occ and ppl though so hopefully they'll be able to advise as well.

Yes there is, that's why those dodgy versions of hits on Itunes don't chart

I stand corrected.

I thought one of them dodgy version did chart. Maybe that was BigTop40 or something then.

There was a "dodgy" version that officially charted of "When love takes over" if that counts
I stand corrected.

You're right, it did but only after it was registered
