February 12, 201015 yr Moon for best Brit film without a doubt... One of the best films of 2009 as far as I'm concerned, and with more ideas and intelligence in its script than Cameron's bloated Avatar.... Quite why Sam Rockwell hasn't been nominated for an Actor award in BAFTA and Oscar is quite puzzling to me... I think his performance is MUCH better than Jerry Renner's in Hurt Locker....
February 12, 201015 yr Here's my choices from the nominations. Best Film An Education (Haven't seen any of them this year - saw most last year - but this is the only one I considered seeing :)) Outstanding British Film Fish Tank In The Loop Moon Three way tie - they're all brilliant. Haven't seen An Education so it's out and Nowhere Boy just wasn't as good as it should have been. Outstanding debut by a British writer, director or producer Duncan Jones (Moon) 100% to Zowie - what a triumph. Director Lone Scherfig (An Education) Again not seen any of them - and you can't give Tarantino an award, he'll just make some bizarre speech. Original Screenplay Joel Coen, Ethan Coen (A Serious Man) Only seen Up and the screenplay for that was definitely not worth being nominated. Going for the Coens as they're usually very entertaining. Adapted Screenplay Jesse Armstrong, Simon Blackwell, Armando Iannucci, Tony Roche (In The Loop) Not sure what it's adapted from though - apart from "The Iraq War" as Iannucci recently quipped. Film Not In The English Language A Prophet Let the Right One In is very good but I saw this on Tuesday and it's cracking. It should be in the Best Film category. The pace is very similar to Goodfellas and the story is excellent. Animated Film Up A great film and, like Ratatouille, proof that genuinely enjoyable CGI films are possible. Not good enough to be considered outside animation though - it's a long, long way away from the animation heyday of early Disney. Leading Actor Andy Serkis (Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll) So scarily accurate - I really hope he wins this, Serkis IS Ian Dury in a decent film which is becoming a bit of a sleeper hit. Leading Actress Audrey Tatou (Coco Before Chanel) I haven't seen any of these, so I'll give it to Audrey Tatou on aesthetic grounds. Supporting Actor Christian McKay (Me And Orson Welles) Again, this is an award for a less-known actor who makes a part his own. McKay is brilliant as Orson Welles and even makes Zac Efron look good on screen. Supporting Actress Kristin Scott Thomas (Nowhere Boy) She played Lennon's aunt brilliantly yet subtley. Music That Clint Mansell's soundtrack to Moon is not nominated is a f***ing disgrace. I'm abstaining. Cinematography Avatar Oh go on, I'll let it have one. The Orange Rising Star Award (voted for by the public) Nope, don't know any of them. Why the f*** isn't Katy Jarvis nominated? Stupid public.
