Posted January 24, 201015 yr What are your Oscar Predictions? (Nominations and Winners wise) I think that Jeff Bridges, Mo'nique and Christoph Waltz all look dead set for awards now, but there could be some suprises! As much as I love Meryl, now that Sandra Bullock won the SAG award I think that she'll win the best actress award (even though she hasn't been nominated for a Bafta!) - though Carey Mulligan could be a suprise winner! :o As for best film, I personally would be suprised if 'Avatar' won, even though it did win the Golden Globe - but the field is wide open tbh (Up In the Air, The Hurt Locker, Precious, etc...) So, what are your predictions? Please Share! :cheer: :w00t:
January 24, 201015 yr I think and hope Jeff Bridges wins best actor, and Chris Waltz supporting. I am pretty sure Sandra Bullock will get the Oscar, afterall the reason she wasnt nominated for a Bafta is because 'The Blind Side' is not being released until March. I cant see Avatar winning Best Picture as the Oscars are usually made up of snobs that wouldnt pick a blockbuster to win. The last one was LOTR in 2003. The Best Picture favourites are nowhere near as strong as the last few years imo.

February 11, 201015 yr I cant see Avatar winning Best Picture as the Oscars are usually made up of snobs that wouldnt pick a blockbuster to win. Bull... As Titanic (an even bigger pile of sh!t than Avatar in terms of the story, acting and script..) and Forrest Gump (totally fukkin LAME) unfortunately proved somehow winning over vastly superior films (Pulp Fiction and LA Confidential....) <_< If Avatar wins out over the vastly superior Hurt Locker or District 9, then I reckon they're either sucking Cameron's dick or he's just bribed everyone.....
February 11, 201015 yr I am really hoping for Jeff Bridges Nah, no way... Colin Firth.... Brilliant, perfectly nuanced and subtle performance in "A Single Man".... Streets ahead of Bridges IMO.... Oh but of course, there's nothing the Academy likes more than an actor (over)playing a drunk/junkie/abused single dwarf mother, or a cannibalistic serial killer of course...... Colin's fukked, he's playing a gay man in the 1960s..... -_- George Clooney has also done a damn fine acting job....

Nah, in general blockbusters get ignored. Just look at the Dark Knight not even getting nominated - it was vastly superior to Slumdog imo, which after watching it again is easily one of the most overrated films in decades. The Hurt Locker is also vastly overrated - is it nowhere near in the league of the classic war films. Okay, it is probebly the best film made about the Iraq war so far but that is nothing saying much is it? A very good film, yes, but best of the year? Not a chance. Moon, District 9, Up In The Air and The Road were all far better, but only two of them are nominated. As I said I have no problem with Avatar winning - it is in a league of it's own in so many ways and will be a hell of alot more infuential to the future of cinema in terms of how films are made than The Hurt Locker. And the storyline is nowhere near as bad as you are making out, if it was, the film wouldnt be as crititcally acclaimed as it is. I mean compared to the vast majort of blockbuster films, the storyline is actually very good, as are the characters. Just compare to with a few of the others from 2009, the utterly appauling Transformers 2 and the awful 2012. When it comes to escapism and cinematic gold, Avatar is a great film, and will easily be the one that wil be the most influential 20 years down the line. The others nominated are very good films, but let's be honest, there is nothing remotely as good as Pulp Fiction or LA Confidential this year, which is why I could care less if Avatar wins. Just compare to with a few of the others from 2009, the utterly appauling Transformers 2 and the awful 2012. Not much of a comparison mate.... Come on, those films are so P!ss-Poor in terms of their plots that even a sixth-grader could come up with a more intellectually stimulating plot.... Howabout you actually compare Avatar to the landmark, incredibly influential Anime films such as Akira or Ghost in the Shell which it clearly wants to be seen as.... Avatar is absolutely LACKING in every department in comparison to those, and the facts are there is NOTHING discussed in Avatar that hasn't been done in some form or other by the Japanese Anime-makers, 20-odd years ago  , nice of Cameron to finally catch up to what the likes of Mamuro Oshii and Katsushiro Otomo have been doing for about the past two or three DECADES... In fact, I'd say it's lacking in comparison to the first "Matrix" film in terms of the story/plot/characters and the fact that The Matrix created an epoch in terms of film-making, The Matrix was a TRUE landmark (and yeah, fukkin' IGNORED by the Oscars too, I mean, sh!t on me, can anyone even tell me what one the Best Film Oscar in 2000?? <_< ) at the end of the 20th Century which brilliantly captured the anxieties/pre-millennium tensions of the era... Avatar is really NOTHING new, it actually rips off the whole idea of "avatars" from The Matrix, ie, the way that Neo, Trinity and Morpheus jack into the system to become something/someone else "more human than human".. In fact, you tell me in what meaningful way it differs to the themes Cameron has already explored in films such as The Abyss, Aliens, Terminator even....? The whole tension between the scientists and the military - Abyss The absolute nutjob Marine character who tries to destroy the aliens - Abyss The scientists trying to understand the aliens and communicate with them - Abyss The whole corporate conspiracy thing - Aliens The Gung-ho Marines who think they can destroy everything in their path and then get a serious wake-up call - Aliens Even most of the characters are, in a lot of ways, surrogates/stand ins of characters from Aliens, Terminator and Abyss.... The Mad-eyed Colonel = Lt Coffey from The Abyss Michelle Rodriguez's character = Vasquez in a helicopter Jake Sulley = Hicks from Aliens + a bit of John Connor Netyri = Ripley + Sarah Connor (in a LOT of ways) Dr Grace Augustine = Lindsay Brigman from The Abyss with a hint of Ripley Parker Selfridge (Giovanni Ribisi) = Carter Burke from Aliens Avatar is unoriginal and rather trite, but yes, given a nice packaging which certainly merits it getting technical awards such as SFX, etc.... The Hurt Locker is up-to-date, relevant, and very finger-on-the-pulse... I'd say it's the best war-film in a LONG time... Bigelow's direction is superb, sure the script could have done with a bit of work, but there's only so much you can do with War films (unless you go down the "Apocalypse Now" route, which would be a little difficult with a conflict such as Iraq, let's be honest here..), whereas the possibilities with Sci Fi are limitless..... I think The Hurt Locker has set a benchmark for how future Films/TV shows will deal with or portray the Iraq conflict/War on Terror... This and the brilliant TV mini series 'Generation Kill' are the standard for others to follow, absolutely no doubt about it....
February 11, 201015 yr And by the way, you're wrong, Slumdog Millionaire is a damn good film.... But, personally, I'd've given the Oscar to The Wrestler or Milk last year.... Dark Knight should've had a mention though, correct, because it set the benchmark very highly indeed for how super-heroes are portrayed in films, and was, frankly, the best comic book adaption ever made....
February 11, 201015 yr Nah, no way... Colin Firth.... Brilliant, perfectly nuanced and subtle performance in "A Single Man".... Streets ahead of Bridges IMO.... Colin's fukked, he's playing a gay man in the 1960s..... -_- George Clooney has also done a damn fine acting job.... Urgh. If that was true Helena Bonham Carter should've at least been nominated for an Oscar for Sweeney Todd. I hate the Oscar panel, I don't understand why they blindly ignore her. I will personally beat them all up, if they snub her for Best Supporting Actress for The King's Speech next year. <_<
February 12, 201015 yr I hate the Oscar panel, I don't understand why they blindly ignore her. Indeed, only ONE nomination for an actress like her is just ridiculous.... She certainly should have had a nomination for "Fight Club" as well at least... But then, look at how many goes it took for Kate Winslett to get what she deserved.... http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000701/awards
February 26, 201015 yr From seeing a couple of the films and watching trailers and whatnot here're my top 5: 01. Precious 02. The Hurt Locker 03. An Education 04. Up 05. Avatar
February 26, 201015 yr After seeing 'Crazy Heart' I sincery hope the academy don't do what they did last year with Mikey Rourke and deliberately give someone else the award due to the favourite winning all the previous award shows. Jeff Bridges performance is simply remarkable and he is easily one of the most underrated actors in Hollywood - an Oscar is overdue to say the least and this is the perfect role for him to get it for. I recken Stanley Tucci is also deserving for his amazing performance in 'The Lovely Bones'. If the Academy have decided not to give Best Picture to Avatar, I hope they do not do the predictable thing and give it to The Hurt Locker - the film simply does not deserve to clear up at the Oscars like it did at the Baftas. Id actually love it if we had a suprise winner such as 'Up' or ' District 9' - and Tarantino winning Best Director would be excellent, just to see the look on some of the snobs faces
February 26, 201015 yr I would LOVE District 9 to get some of the effects gongs over Avatar, superb film although it is sort of true that the fight scene at the end is basically Peter Jackson making up for not making a 'Halo' movie  If Pulp Fiction couldn't get Best Picture I don't see how Inglourious Basterds will, but it would be fantastic if Quentin Tarantino could get Best Director. Although I wouldn't mind Kathryn Bigelow winning, it's one of three there. Would like to see one of the two BAFTA winners (Firth or Mulligan) bagging the Oscar but Carey looks more likely given how (comparatively) open the Actress race is. If Jeff Bridges doesn't win I'd probably bet on Clooney getting Best Actor, although I'd have liked to have seen Brad Pitt there for Inglourious. Oh, and it's an absolute ABOMINATION if Christoph Waltz doesn't win Best Supporting Actor, Tarantino has been quoted as saying the role was a) the hardest he'd ever written and B) virtually unplayable. That's some acclaim.
February 26, 201015 yr Kathryn Biggelow (The Hurt Locker) is only the fourth woman to be nominated for Best Director. The others were Lina Wertmuller (Seven Beauties, 1975), Jane Campion (The Piano, 1973) and Sofia Coppolla (Lost in translation, 2004). BTW, did you know that she also directed "Pointbreak", one of the coolest movies ever, IMO?
March 5, 201015 yr I love Sandra Bullock and Jeff Bridges. I hope they make a movie together some day. I do NOT make 6 figures, but I do make $30K working 4 hours a day. The internet has opened up so many REAL jobs! (snipurl.com/realjobs) has hundreds of companies listed like AT&T, Hilton, U-Haul, Convergys, VIP Desk, 1-800-Flowers and West. This list is FREE and is NOT A SCAM. These companies are offering employment positions. I can't post full links because of this forum. You have to cut what's in the parenthesis and paste it. Hope this helps!
