February 2, 201015 yr Author How does the German single chart work? Do you need to have a physical CD released to chart? No, singles can chart on downloads alone, but (and there is a big BUT), record labels can decide if they want their singles charting on downloads alone, or they want to wait until the physical release. This happens a lot of time (for example: Madonna - Celebration was number 1 if I remember well on iTunes but couldn't chart only when it got the full physical release, that happened also with Lady Gaga - Bad Romance and now with Owl City - Fireflies) BTW the German chart is compiled by revenue and not by sales (units), it doesn't matter how many units a single sold, only its revenue that matters, so for example a cheaper priced single can sell lots, still its revenue will be a bit lower than a more expensive single with the same units sold.
