I don't like it. There's not much variation to it. No money notes at all. It's a show off I can sing faster than you piece with huge elephant traps.

When you run through the youtube versions by some of the finest singers in the world, the comments are stingy. All the recognisable names get slated.

It's a complete change of style for Darius. His usual interpretations flow but this is more staccato, more rhythmic.

The only song he's done which reminds me of the right sort of style is the one from the drunken scene in GWTW which he had to sing at odds with the band to highlight the tension. It's too late at night - I can't remember the title. Completely different emotionally though.

However, Darius's classical voice has a natural brightness which could be an advantage for him with this aria.

As someone said earlier, Darius has the bit between his teeth. He is always up for a challenge. He will work his socks off. He doesn't need to learn a new language system so he can concentrate on the aria.

If he can get to the point where he's nailing it every time he sings it by Thursday, he has Friday to give his interpretation the Darius sparkle, using some of those Meisner techniques he learned in LA.

Lyrics

DON GIOVANNI

Finch’han dal vino calda la testa,

una gran festa fa preparar!

Se trovi in piazza qualche ragazza,

teco ancor quella cerca menar,

teco ancor quella cerca menar,

cerca menar,cerca menar,

Senza alcun'ordine la danza sia,

ch'il minuetto chi la follia,

chi l'alemanna farai ballar,

ch'il minuetto farai ballar,

chi la follia farai ballar,

chi l'alemanna farai ballar,

Ed io frattanto dall'altro canto,

con questa e quella vo'amoreggiar!

vo'amoreggiar! vo'amoreggiar!

Ah, la mia lista doman mattina

d'una decina devi aumentar!

Ah, la mia lista

d'una decina devi aumentar!

Se trovi in piazza qualche ragazza,

teco ancor quella cerca menar,

Ah, la mia lista doman mattina

d'una decina devi aumentar!

Se trovi in piazza la danza sia

ch'il minuetto chi la follia,

chi l'alemanna farai ballar,

Ah, la mia lista doman mattina

d'una decina devi aumentar!

doman mattina devi aumentar!

doman mattina devi aumentar!

devi aumentar! devi aumentar!

devi devi aumentar! Hahahaha!!

I also think hes been stitched up. It is too wordy wont show off his voice I feel and he will have to keep up well with the orchestra to pull it off. Even so it is not well known to the general public. I dont like it for the reason Baytree says, there is no variation. I can imagine the others being given an easier ride.Re the darius interpretation giving it his sparkle, will he be allowed to this week.

They can stick Darius behind a static mike but they can't stop him using his very expressive hands and face.

And he's got something in his corner this week to encourage him to give it his all ............

Avril!

Not at all what I hoped he would sing.

all I can hope is thathis wonderful tone will bring it to life, as said if professional opera singers are getting stingy commnets..

you would hav thought they would have given all teh singers a song that brings out their best for friday, semi finals and all.

I just know Darius will give it his all, I was hoping for something powerful and emotive. I suppose it depends which part, and how long he has to sing..and if they slow the tempo, which they have done for others....

mind you on a plus side, I can see Darius in character, in all the videos I have seen the performers are very dashing, I see Rhett again, I hope Darius has been doing breathing techniques though, got breathless just watching them

If they slow it down, the panel will tell everyone it's slowed down. I can't see any advantage in him having this piece. It's a joke bit really - just a see how fast you can sing. It's not about quality.

The folks on ds don't seem to like the piece either

"Murderous enough for a professional opera singer. There is virtually nowhere to breathe in the entire piece. If the producers want to see Darius writhing on the floor, blue-faced and begging for mercy they might give it to him. Otherwise, probably best avoided."

"Agreed - hyperventilation fodder (and I'm not keen on it either)"

"I think it's more acrobatics than art....

Probably one of my least favourite pieces from Giovanni(?) "

" Poor s*d - if it's not just a rumour, God help him - it looks as if it was trying even for Terfel! "

Why give him two Mozart arias on the trot?

Why are they keeping him in the same character box all the time - roguish womaniser. Escamillo from Carmen, Figaro and now Don Giovanni. Darius is capable of more.

May be among the best pieces to give him to get him out. I just find it so hard to believe they'd do this. I'd say that people would notice they're gunning for him but I've just spoken to someone who believed everything the panel said. She's convinced that Danny could be the next Mario Lanza.

Danny had one simple aria with loads of repetition and 3 songs, all 4 in Italian. Nobody else got as easy a ride. His effort was great but what he produced in 3 out of 4 weeks wasn't and the judges definitely overpraised him.

You just feel drawing any kind of compliment for Darius from the judges (except Katherine) is like drawing teeth and always grudged.

Apart from John Sargeant on Strictly, I've never seen judges so visibly disappointed that a contestant went through, as that panel last week. I just hope Darius didn't notice.

Well they've done exactly what we expected they would. Can't vote him out, so sing him out! I feel so annoyed, I can almost see them huddled together thinking of the worst possible song for him. Why does he have this affect on some people? Is there some reason that we're missing as to why they don't want him to win? Some 'behind the scenes' reason? I wonder when the other songs will be announced for the girls? Darius will give his best shot as always, but if the professionals can't master it, what chance has he got? :( If he doesn't succeed, this just gives the judges one last chance to vent their poisonous comments on to him. Sue

I have had two phone calls from friends who hadnt watched the proramme but caught the repeat on tuesday, they absolutely raved about Darius and yet had not taken much notice of what I said before. One is very much into good music and she said, you wont like this, he is wasted on pop music, his voice is so good. She thought he would be better doing crossover and she said what a shame the last six years had been for him in not showing his bass voice and why hadnt he done this before. She couldnt understand why not and I said it was probably the record company amongst other things.. She was bowled over by his performance. I do agree with what she says because I feel the last at least 6 years have been in the wilderness to some degree when you have a voice like that. although I know he has been doing MT but even that didnt show the public what he was capable of.I feel a bit sad at what might have been sooner recognised.

My thoughts on the champagne song are that if the well known bass singers on you tube are getting stick for it what are the judges going to say on friday re D.and I do agree with what everyone is saying re this.

was just looking for something on it too, I do know now though that Don Giovann wasnt a very nice man and the aria is when his servant cals a party for him? - so rather than Rhett, Darius can be pulling on the itialian baddy's character he played in Hotel Babylon..

would be interesting to know more, it is meant to be a very famous aria according to wikipedea.

I don't think the last 5 years were wasted. Perhaps Darius was meant to take the scenic route instead of the motorway.

Darius learned a great deal when he trained in the Meisner technique in LA. It teaches actors how to really get into their character and also how to keep thinking and reacting all the time, really listening to what other characters are saying and what is going on all around. I distinctly remember Jill paice saying there was always something going on behind Darius's eyes.

Could he have carried off Rhett without it? Not nearly as well I'm sure.

You could see it on Friday the scheming little smile as he moved down from the mirror platform, a tilt of the head when he was seated, all kinds of tiny movements - subtle acting.

Gareth Valentine ( Chicago & GWTW) and William Brohn (GWTW) taught Darius how to look after his voice and how to use his full range to convey the whole gamut of human emotions.

And he kept writing his own songs!

From what I can make out the song is about Don Giovanni's desire to take advantage of a dance in the square to garner more conquests (about ten) to add to his list - (Leporelli's List). He's in the mood for love but not in the mood for wooing.

Yes, rotter Gennaro Fazio sound s about right.

I have always thought Dairus was too good for Pop..especially the trite rubbish in the charts!

that voice does need ot be aired, would lvoe some classical crossover - would be a crime for them to overlook his talent

I still want a new album of songs written and felt by Darius. I'd prefer them not to be opera but beggers can't be choosers.
I would be quite happy with classical crossover but I do like him interpreting parts, I would even enjoy him doing opera if it was arias known to me like last weeks, cant get it out of my head, a dvd of him doing crossover/classical/opera mix would be even better but I just have that feeling yet again that someone is going to put the block in.
