Popstar to Opera Star

Not watched for a week or two so thought would give it a go this week. Two to be eliminated this week for the final next week. I hope Dancing on Ice is watching, where that programme has been on for ever and we seem to have as many people left in it as we started with!

Lawrence Llewellyn fop doesn't look too comfortable sitting next to Meatloaf - what a strange combination!

First up Kim Marsh - beautiful dress and the most glamours I have seen her look. Song choice Pie Jesu not the best song for Kim, there is nowhere to hide and we heard every flat note. More used to hearing Sarah Brightman sing is and a tough act to follow.

Next door's dog howled all the way through it! Noticed Katherine Jenkins said her performance was the best she had sung it all week - all you can ask I guess but its not the same as saying it was a good performance. Think it's your last week Kim.

Darius next up - nice little aria with lots of words in it. and an acting performance where Darius moved and sang at the same time, not a great baritone fan myself but quite enjoyed it. Darius for the final.

Marcella Detroit - nice performance and she gets to move around the stage this week and act as well as sing. From a distance i kept thinking she was Dot Cotton. Not sure about the frock - it looks like one of Betty Legs Diamonds cast-offs. I am sure I saw her wearing it on the blackpool stage giving her final performance before retiring from obscurity.

Last up - Another Nolan. Lovely aria from the Ball scene of Romeo and Juliet. Think Bernie is a little long in the tooth to be playing Juliet, mind you Orlando isn't much of a catch as Romeo. great performance and it pains me to say it but she should be in the final. As long as if she wins it doesn't mean even more Nolans will crawl out of retirement and make us watch them sing\dance\live in the jungle or anything else TV can dream up to get us to pay to dial in votes!

I could have done without a 'special' performance of 'Bat out of Hell' from Meatloaf as a 'special treat' Can't bear that tune and I think I have heard it as many times as I need to over the last 30 years. If you think the song hasn't been around that long - it has. Bat out of Hell was released in 1979. Meatloaf has made a career out of that one song ever since - not bad I suppose, but not for me.

Results in and the final for next week is Darius and Bernie - can't wait!

Found this on a google search. I have no idea who it is(though I believe it is a lady) but found her tweets(or whatever they were) quite amusing and well observed. Here are some of the most relevent ones to me!

21:56 I wonder if Darius really left his homework to the last minute or it's a contrivance for telly. Build up the drama #poptoopera

21:59 Damn you Darius. I like that but if I had to dissect it objectively it wouldn't pass muster. #poptoopera

22:00 I also like the way that Darius is being so constructive about getting the most out of it.

22:08 Marcella's Laughing Aria wasn't polished and a bit squawky. But I've heard worse singers in opera houses just this week!

22:09 And isn't it so much better now that Danny McFly's awful stupid screaming fans have gone?

22:23 Bernie full marks for trying in Je veux vivre but Darius and Marcella are streets ahead of her. And little Kymmy is nowhere. #poptoopera

22:27 And I'm sure it doesn't do Bernie any harm to perform last, week after week. Hastily recorded crossover album in time for Mother's Day?

22:40 I'm absolutely delighted for Darius Campbell but gutted for Marcella Detroit who was fab. Bernie Nolan...meh. #poptoopera

23:20 A colleague of mine, a huge Meatloaf fan, walked out of a gig several years back. Verdict: voice shot to pieces

Full list is here

Bernie's diction was poor again. I don't know why they keep giving her French because I agree with a tweet I read - she might as well be singing Klingon.

I nearly screamed at the early bits where she sang so slowly I could make out what she was attempting to sing. After that ......not a lot, i'm afraid.

How they could slate Darius so much and keep coming back to it, is a mystery to me.

it makes me so mad, darius is pulled up on his language, whilst bernie is praised with not a mention - so it seems to non french speakers that she must be great at the french, while darius is ununderstandable - how to twist and manipulate is the panels ploy
HORRORS......... I'm working nights Friday so wont be able to vote :snif:

Surely there's someone who could place a few votes on your behalf Spam?

wonderful, thanks megham. he really looks wonderful, just replaying the show - he was so good, llb really wanted to make sure he lost votes didnt he

He did. Reading some of the posts, I feel they just have no knowledge of Darius. It makes a difference when you are somone who expects to be stitched up. Because he looks confident, it doesn't mean he is. I know the thanking people gets on people's nerves but it's genuine and he has to acknowledge publically his appreciation of what people do for him.

Lovely thanks Meg :)

Darius wanting to change his song reminds me of Popstars when he wanted to sing 'You’ve Lost That Loving Feeling' which he felt demonstrated his range. He was told he couldn't sing it and asked to sing 'Never gone give you up' which he felt was a joke and refused to sing. They decided on 'Make it easy on yourself' which I loved, but that was the week he went out. He didn’t want to win Popidol and be tied into the contract, however he does want to win this show and I guess he feared the choice of song would see him leave.

I know we get a lot of twats on the internet putting him down but I really do think majority of the public have been and still are behind him, I think the votes he is getting prove that. It's the Media who try and influence the public against him but if his fans can see that so can others. IMO the public disregard the judge’s comments in most of these types of programs and I really think he may win this.

Thanks Meg. The staging reminded me a lot of Chicago and All I Care About.

But the presentation was all wrong.

Don Giovanni is an evil womaniser who only cares about adding notches to his bedpost and not always with consent. In this aria he's gloating about how many more he'll have on his list by the morning.

Darius couldn't put portray the dark Don Giovanni because the producers put all those women on the stage. He had to do the best he could and present him more innocently as a bon viveur. .

Changing Don Giovanni into a gigolo would no doubt have annoyed many opera lovers.

I think it worked ok, he was playing billy flynn a bit, who was a nasty bit of work. I beleived the character as he was singing that aria, it has a dark touch to it as well as the womanizer.

A lot taken from the Mail, I think.

Nigel Lythgoe: 'I've always liked Darius'

Friday, February 12 2010, 18:05 GMT

By Alex Fletcher, Reality TV Editor

ITV

Nigel Lythgoe has claimed that he has always been a fan of popstar and West End performer Darius Campbell.

Reality TV judge Lythgoe gave Campbell his first big break in 2000, when the aspiring Scottish performer appeared on ITV1 reality show Popstars. However, the singer was famously criticised and mocked for his rendition of Britney Spears's '...Baby One More Time' on the show.

"Its one of those things you look back on and laugh at. We all have bad hair days. My equivalent was a bad song day that happened to be seen by millions of people on TV," Campbell told the Daily Mail.

Lythgoe joked: "Even then, there was no question this man had something. We were as interested in crazies who would make good TV as in good singers. As it turned out, Darius fulfilled both criteria."

Campbell returned to reality TV for the first series of Pop Idol, but Lythgoe revealed that he warned the star against the move.

"I'd felt guilty about the way we'd belittled Darius on Popstars," he said. "I should have known he was thicker-skinned than that. But I'd made it my business to create this monster called Simon Cowell whose remit was to chop off the legs of contestants from below the knee."

However, the 60-year-old insisted that he always knew Campbell would go on to become a success, revealing that they have remained in touch for the past decade. "He was the housewives' choice, the sexy one," he said. "I think films will be on the horizon for him as he moves from celebrity status to being an established star."

Speaking about Lythgoe's future, Campbell said: "Nigel will be dominating the world in some way. He once gave me the best three words of advice ever: Less is more. He's been a sort of silent mentor to me from that day to this."

Campbell is taking part in his third reality series Popstar To Operastar tonight on ITV1, while Lythgoe judges the So You Think You Can Dance final tomorrow on BBC One.

As if Darius would have any women chasing after him!!!!
re BPs post again about those opera fans tweets, if you trace who they are tweeting backwards and forwards to, the comments are so interesting, they are so to speak experts..and are seeing the way the show is fixing it to try to oust Darius, they are all for Darius(albeit they say they arent voting..)and their comments regarding the other singers and the judges are interesting to say the least, good to know some better qualified than I in these things can see the same as me!! I think some of them were on the verge of voting for Daiurs LOL, I wish they would next week, as they arent impressed with Bernie
