Welcome back, Bramley. We've missed you.

If Darius had been weaker, B.P., we'd have voted more. I know I did during ABBA week on PI when the song just didn't suit him and on Big Band Night when the judges' spat could have been detrimental.

Many of the McFly fans genuinely don't like Darius's deep voice so they think he should have gone out instead of Danny. They thought he should have been bottom two last week as well. Of course they're deeply saddened.

Why are they so reluctant to give darius any even playing field?

Danny had a whole chorus of singers. You'd think they could have spared one for Darius to sing his aria to. Instead he gets a mirror and chair! just as well he has all that West End experience and Trevor Nunn made him improvise.

I just sincerely meant that, wether anyone voted 1, 100 or 1000 times well done, because we all contributed to D going through :) I hope that's how it came across BT :) (not that I could possibly know how many votes anyone has made in any case)

I have to say I wholeheartedly agree with you on the level playing field comment  Danny has so many support singers that you can't even hear his last note and they can't even spare D a body to perform against  My God he was good though wasn't he :yahoo:

Wouldn't it be nice if you didn't keep feeling it was fixed? I dread to think what they'll do to get him out next week. At least he's ended up the top male - and we get another performance next week. At worst, we'll only miss one possible week from him.

Edited to say he was brilliant.

quote B.P - Danny has so many support singers that you can't even hear his last note. I think maybe you have hit the nail on the head, if there is a supporting cast of singers then if they dont hit a note or last note, its covered. I think it was last week Kym had a supporting group of singers who came in on her very last high note and I have noticed this before in other programmes.Just my thoughts.
So glad he got through. Looking forward to seeing him singing on the repeat. Even though I didn't get to hear him, I managed to vote and hubby did too.

I can't help thinking the fuss that Meat Loaf and LL-B made over the zip that I certainly hadn't noticed, was designed to humiliate Darius and put off voters.

Anyway Darius is through and that's the outcome we needed this week.

Pretty tactless presenter remark from Myleene at the beginning - Darius is hoping for a happy marriage.

Edited by Baytree

At least Darius got through despite them.

yes, I noticed that marriage comment..insensitive to say the least

Darius just outshone them all IMO, and I agree, No help with that aria, while the others get choruses and others to play off against..ie Bernie this week.still it worked so much better without someone else up on stage with him - as said he can improvise so well, I could see the pageboy he was singing to in my minds eye.

just watcing it again, his voice is just so wonderful, I feel like I have been bathed in warm melted chocolate this morning again, such a richness.

and also, yup, more than one occasion the choruses have masked the weak big noted the otehrs were meant to be getting..

tbh, the danny fans are mostly foreigners, watcing on links - and they have been quite abusive, no loss tbh. I feel its a mistake to use teeeny popstars in this type of program,

Popstar To Operastar: 5th February 2010 liveblog

February 5th, 2010 by Lisa McGarry. Tags: itv, Popstar to Operastar

Popstar To Operastar is back and we’re only one week off the semi final.

After all the usual filler clips and introductions Bernie Nolan took to the stage and we can see why she is already favourite to win with the bookies. Not only did she sing amazingly well, she did it while dancing, flirting and managed to hit a high c sharp at the end of her song. She blew us away and the judges agreed.

Rolando: Chaka chaka chaka ( don’t worry, we’ve no idea what that means either!)

Meat Loaf: You owned that lady!

Danny Jones

Danny was in the bottom two last week and we could see that he was worried about ending up there again tonight. He made McFly practice opera songs with him during the week and we think it paid off. Danny always has a great stage presence which helps get him through each song. but we think he was vocally stronger this week. He has a bit to go before he reaches Bernie or Kym’s level, but there was a distinct improvement.

Katherine: It was really good performance and I kept you in last week because I could see the potntial. I’m glad because you are back

Lawrence: That was very much A side. You turned it into a football chant and I liked it!

Rolando: I’m very happy. Danny had fun with the piece and gave a good performance.

Kym Marsh

Kym cried during her rehearsal saying that the song reminds her of a certain somebody who means a great deal to her. She had to reign her emotions in a bit for tonight’s performance, while still making it believable. We like Kym and thought she managed the big notes well, but the bits in between were often shaky and slightly flat. She has a gorgeous singing voice, but Bernie Nolan is much more suited to an opera style.

Katherine: I know you struggled this week and I thought you held it together. I know it wasn’t easy for you.

Lawrence: That was extraordinarily effective. It was terribly moving.

Rolando: You started flat, I think the emotion and the breathing caused problems. You remained connected emotionally and that is very important for a performer.

Meat Loaf: I just love it when people just feel the song so much. You’re making me cry now.

Darius Campbell

It’s hard for us to concentrate on Darius’ singing each week, when we are so distracted by his chiseled features. But we’re giving it a go and because we’re not at all biased, we think it’s fair to say that he is by far the best out of all the male contestants who appeared on the show this year. We loved the comedy spin he put on his performance tonight and the tone of his voice impressed us greatly.

Meat Loaf: Three out of four weeks you have got the character. Check your fly I think it’s down!

Katherine: I wanna know why you were looking Meat! I really enjoyed your performance Darius, When you are singing in the right register it is so lovely.

Rolando: That’s where your voice should be singing. You created a performance out of it and thats very good. Congratulations.

Marcella Detroit

Marcella will be singing Ave Maria by Schubert and judging by the VT of her rehearsal, she’s going to nail it. Marcella started off a little shakily and her nerves definitely shine through. But she gained strength as she progressed. We didn’t think she was as good as last week, but still, she is up at the top with Bernie Nolan for us.

Meat Loaf: That was a really hard song because everybody knows it. You got the notes, you got the emotion and you had the angels from heaven standing beside you tonight.

Katherine: You did not need the fireworks this week and my worry about you in week one was that you wouldn’t be able to control your lower register. But you did, well done!

Rolando: I got a different quality in her performance. She controlled her vocal and it was a tremendous performance by Marcella

Lawrence: I liked the way you did that, it was bleeding, soulful and earthy.

McFly singer Danny Jones gets boot after coming in bottom two with Marcella Detroit

Kym Marsh broke down in tears last night as she performed a heart-rending song on Popstar to Operastar that reminded her of someone very close to her heart.

As she wept, the Coronation Street actress was hugged by presenter Myleene Klass who was also verging on tears as she comforted her former Hearsay bandmate.

It is thought the song, Nella Fantasia (In My Fantasy), evoked memories of her tragic son Archie Jay Lomas, who died moments after being born 18 weeks premature last February.

Kym Marsh broke down in tears last night on Popstar to Operastar after singing a moving song that reminded her of someone special

She was comforted by presenter and former Hearsay bandmate Myleene Klass, who was also on the verge of tears

Before she took to the floor, viewers saw a video of an emotional Kym revealing she was worried about the performance because she found the Italian song so moving as it reminded her of 'someone very special'.

It came on a night that saw McFly star Danny Jones sent home after coming in the bottom two with Shakespears Sister singer Marcella Detroit.

After the judging panel were split on who to save, the decision was taken back to the public vote and Danny had the least so was sent packing.

Kym, whose baby Archie died after being born prematurely last February, sang the Italian song Nella Fantasia which refers to 'souls that are always free'

In a night of high drama, Meat Loaf also reignited his feud with presenter Alan Titchmarsh by holding a piece of paper with the words 'protest' emblazoned on it.

The American rock star, one of the four judges, is said to have become cross with Alan for snubbing him over the past few weeks and focusing on the opinions of the other three judges.

After Kym had performed, she told Myleene she had done her best, but said her breathing had been affected by her emotional state.

McFly star Danny Jones and Shakespears Sister singer Marcella Detroit were in the bottom two

But it was Danny who was sent packing after the decision went back to the public vote when the judging panel were split on who to save

The lyrics of the song refer to dreaming of 'souls that are always free' - one of the lines that Kym is thought to have found particularly powerful.

Judge Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen agreed, telling her: 'That was terribly moving.'

Katherine Jenkins added: 'I know what you've been going though this week. I know that line that gets you, but you managed it. Well done.'

Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen (left) and Rolando Villazon (right) chose to save Danny while Meatloaf and Katherine Jenkins picked Marcella

Danny performed a lively rendition of Funiculi Funicula

Meat Loaf told her: 'I love it when people just feel the song so much... and you are making me cry now.'

Darius Campbell lightened the tone, however, when he sang with his flies undone.

The slip up was noticed by Meat Loaf after the former Popstars contestant performed Non Piu Andrai from The Marriage of Figaro by Mozart.

Marcella impressed with her scaled back performance of Ave Maria

Judge Rolando Villazon congratulated on his accomplished rendition before Meat Loaf butted in saying: 'By the way, check your fly. I think it's down.'

Jenkins then started to laugh, saying 'they are... but I want to know why you are looking.'

Shakespears Sister singer Marcella Detroit sang Ave Maria by Schubert.

Marcella, known for being able to hit the big notes, gave a stripped down performance, controlling her voice and rising to the challenge.

Jenkins told her afterwards that she did a fantastic job and managed to control her voice expertly, with no big notes to hide behind.

McFly star Danny Jones brought the house down with his confident performance of Funiculi Funicula.

The piece is a famous song written by Italian journalist Peppino Turco and set to music by Italian composer Luigi Denza in 1880.

After he had finished, he received a standing ovation from the audience as his fellow bandmates clapped him on.

Bernie Nolan opened the show with Les Filles De Cadix by Leo Delibes

She said after she enjoyed flirting with the male backing dancers

Jenkins told him: 'It was a really good performance. Last week was not good and I kept you in because I could see the potential in you and I'm so pleased I did, because you are back.'

Bernie Nolan kicked off the show, flirting with backing male dancers as she sang a powerful rendition of Les Filles De Cadix by French composer Leo Delibes.

She said afterwards: 'It was great to have the boys. It was really helpful.'

Villazon praised her for her 'impressive' rendition while Meat Loaf told her: 'Darling, when you walked on that stage, you owned it... you owned that stage.'

For some reason it wont let me post the pic with it.

Most of the reviews look as though they'll only concentrate on his trousers

Yes thats the report meg, not a lot about D was there and I do think the bit about the flies was uncalled for and manipulation.

OMG wasn't Darius soooooo Awesome again :yahoo: !i loved the way he performed this song, i love it when he turns into the character,i loved the comedy bit he added! :D Mmmmmmmm loved himin that purple suit too......looking Hot as always!

I asked a question about it on his discussion board as it just made me laugh - then I realised that it'd have been embarrasing for him and, even more, it'd be something for the media to demean him. Not how good he was, just he'd been so nervous he'd made a mistake.

So I removed the question.

Edited by megham

When you are singing in the right register it is so lovely.

Rolando: That’s where your voice should be singing.

That's why Darius never being given an aria for his range until now completely mystifies me.

Toreador kept him at the bottom and he couldn't show transition up and down his range like the girls have always been able to do with their choices.

I know they said to Marcella that on the first week she couldn't have controlled her lower notes but having seen Darius in the West End and seeing the breathing and control on I'm Your Man, I think he could have had a decent crack at Non Piu Andrai much earlier.

it was a quite ridiculous comment wasnt it.. THEY choose the arias, they spoke as if they had no choie in what register they made him sing!

they really have no excuse for giving him any more tenor arias now, ther are some great ones left vor a baritone..if they say these things about his voice this wek and he has anyting but a baritone aria next week, I'll know its a fix.

a tweet this morning ..Congratulations! My wife had to try 3 times to vote for you as there was "heavy demand for this number"!

anyone had this?? have to say I have redial down to a tee, so one finger clicking to disconnect as soon as alan says hello, and one on redial, almost immediately!

I had a coule of engaged tones whihch were probably me being too quick..but otherwise got through each time.

and watching repeat it sems most unfair Danny had that chorus blaring over him as he 'tried' to hit the last note, it was almost as if they were trying anything to give him a chance

Edited by prettyinpink

I have played his performance over and over because it is so brilliant. His stage presence is awesome.

Tweet - well said!

mattruskin if darius found the cure for cancer it would still reported like this - "that britney spears twat off pop idol cures cancer"

Shouldn't laugh I know.

I have played his performance over and over because it is so brilliant. His stage presence is awesome.

but without the page boy, people were still confused - "Why is Darius singing to a baby?"

Despite all the PI tricks - week one - song choice week 2- language skills seemingly more important for Toreador than all the other French ones which had been less comprehensible week 3 - VT intro very negative week 4- manipulate the staging to make less impact ( tough they forgot about his X factor ) - Pstos 's voters do seem to be voting on performances - Marcella wasn't nearly as impressive this week

Tried to get up early enough to catch the re-run on itv but switched on just after D had finished

Danny's been favoured throughout, as I feel the producers wanted to maintain a younger element in the viewing public. He's only had to sing one language(I think) and has had a lot of favourable comments, many times unjustified IMO.

I'm still P'd off with the negative spin about D from Rolando, and the fact that even when they comment positively on D, they don't rave about him like they do the others.

Lyn thought Kym was best on the night(???) but said D was very good, but her first comments were based not upon his performance but on the fact that his fly was undone. I can't help but feel this distracted many other viewers too, though I don't necessarily feel Meatloaf meant it to have a detrimental affect on D, more that he was wanting to add something that the other judges hadn't mentioned or picked up on, to add a little credence to his presence(remember his protest to AT).
