I wouldn't miss the Peacocks if they went.

Also regarding comedy in EE - I do like Shirly and Heather when they get comic lines to do.

I always say the comedy in eastenders is far to under rated, its not that instant stand out comedy lines they use, its the dry wit comedy that needs that couple of seconds to get, i find the comedy in eastenders extremely clever, i hate cheap comedy lines myself and much prefer wit people often say to me that im a very witty person, i suppose its what ever suits people some people like dry wit comedy some like that instant cheao kinda comedy, but once it makes us laugh which ever one you like is the main thing.

I don't see any 'dry wit' in Eastenders at all. You can see any 'comedy' they have coming because they send it on an express train ten minutes earlier to deliver it. Its laboured, unfunny, unsophisticated and lets face it ... plain rubbish. I admit that EE has the upper hand over Corrie for Drama at the moment (even if it is way too far-fetched ... but then again ... so is Corrie) but comedy ... forget it! EE is firmly at the bottom of the pile. The only time EE makes me laugh is when I see clips from Harry Hill taking its unintentionaly funny bits ... and they are laugh out loud hilarious (such as Max with the shoes ... I laughed my socks off!)

Rob (Mush) was right earlier ... the only soap that consistently does humour well (even though it probably doesn't have the best actors) is Emmerdale. And that is because it has expert 'specialised' scriptwriters.

Well all i can say to that is you have either have to be done deaf to miss some of thefunny lines in eastenders, there are plenty of of them, its easy to say eastenders lacks comedy as that is the label the press have given it but its far from that for anyone who watches the show with aan open mind.
Agreed. An open mind is rather a key ingredient when it comes to critiquing any soap.

No ... EE just doesn't do comedy. It is plainly useless. Although I must admit ... Dot has made me laugh for years ... usually at her most 'dramatic' times. She does a SUPERB Albert Steptoe impression and has made a fantastic money-earner for the duration of the series. June Brown is an awful actress.

If eastenders is utterly useless it doesnt exactly say much for corrie at the moment as eastenders has miles on corrie at the moment.

Pete ... we're talking 'comedy' ... not drama ... to which we've agreed ... EE has the upper hand at the moment. But Corrie's comedy (even in its darkest hours ... like now!!!) is still 'streets' ahead of EE! But Emmerdale is road-upon-road ahead of both of them.

The thing about Corrie fans is ... we can see that our favourite soap lacks in certain areas. EE fans just CANNOT see that their favourite soap lacks in some departments ... you all go on as though EVERY aspect is brilliant ... it itsn't! No program is!

That is not the case, i will be one of the first people to say something bad about eastenders when i see something that i dont like, i have always said one of the reasons i love eastenders is for its dry wit which is something i adore about the show, on the whole coronation street does deal with more comedy scenes like the brilliant comedy scenes we are getting from Helen Worth the last few weeks, and yes if cheap slap stick comedy rocks your boat coronation street is far better in that department. But leaving my sarcasism out coronation street on the whole deals with far more comedy than eastenders and eileen grimshaw is a very good example of that, but to 100% say eastenders does not do comedy is incorrect as you are not a regular viewer of the show.

Coronation street fans are utterly the worst people for understanding that becuase the show is on air 50 years does not mean its automatically the best soap, and many eastenders fans have no problem in saying bad things about the show. Dont get me wrong i do defend the show alot aswell as people who are not a real fan of the show just slate it for no reason and its it is nothing but depressing whicg again is not the case.

Yes, we all watch shows and have our own take on shows which is totally fair, but coronation street is not gods gift when it comes to comedy by any means.

But by the same token ... some EE fans think that because she is 510 years old ... June Brown is a great actress (she is NOT ... she is rubbish ... and if it wasn't for EE ... she'd probably be destitute!)

Yes ... Corrie is going through a bad patch at the moment (and has done in the past) ... but EE is hardly the soap equivalent of Brideshead Revisited!

Norma

Every soap has their good and bad patches and it goes in swings and round abouts, we have seen that happen over and over again, it was only a few years back eastenders was on its knees thanks to the awful work of Louise Berridge so in that regards i totally understand what its like for corrie fans at the moment but it seems to be slowly turning the tide.

June Brown is an acquired taste, in my own opinion she is a love or hate type actress but i like her although i thought Dot was a far more quirly charactor in the earlier years i do miss the double tean of ethel and dot which i so enjoyed at the time.

I compare Dot to Dev in coronation street loads of people love him but i think he is one of the worst actors to ever grace the television world and likewise rosie webster is no better. On saying saying Sally Whitaker who plays Sally Webster is a brilliant actress who is sadly under estimated in the world of soap and likewise sue clever who plays eileen grimshaw is the same although i think sally whitaker is a better actress.

I agree with you on Jimmie Harkishan (Dev) he is an appalling actor ... however ... his character and Shobna's (Sunita) ... along with the two aunties ... has provided the funniest lines of late in Corrie. This is thanks largely to superb Corrie writers ... compensating for the 'bad actor' factor with excellent writing. Likewise ... Sally Whittaker (like Lacey Turner in EE) is a good enough actress to shine in anything outside of the soap(s).

Norma

I hope they give Sally Whitaker some more good stuff to get her teeth into apart from the whole kevin molly affair thing which i just hope is forgotten about, sally done the scenes about her cancer so well it almost felt real, i just hope she gets some recognition for that even if it was just getting a nominating for best actress which i think she has yet to get.

Sally is my favourite character (amazing as she was the one I most detested in the earlier days). I love it when they give her good comedy lines ... although I see them being far fewer given the 'cancer' revelation. For me ... she is the best, consistent character since the fabulous Doris Speed (Annie Walker).

Consistant she definitly is, Helen Worth is delivering her lines in an extremely weird manner as of late i dont know is it just me but she is absolutly irritating at present.

Helen Worth has never been a good actress ... but she has been the first to admit that she isn't ... which is why she has always said she'd never leave Corrie. At least this is better than all those actors who do leave a soap (not knowing which side their bread is buttered) and then come back with their tails between their legs when they find they can't get anything else that pays as well.

You are right about the Gail character though. For one ... she speaks so quietly half the time I can't hear what she's saying. David is the only character in the whole Platt/McIntyre/Grimshaw triangle that is worth watching.

Norma

im fully with norma regarding eastenders being unfunny.

its got nothing to do with whether im liking the current storylines or not, nor having an open mind. real comedy makes you laugh, it catches you and makes you laugh whether you want to or not. emmerdale consistently does this with their almost pardody characters acting slightly ott. viv windsor, nicola, val, all deliver very sharp one liners that youd miss if you blinked. many times ive laughed out loud at a line from emmerdale ... a show i watch for the storylines not as a comedy. THATS why emmerdale pisses all over the others (and even 'comedy' dramas like shameless).

i have NEVER laughed involuntary at eastenders the way i have at emmerdale. i love parody comedy, i love one liners, i love satire, i only find traces of these qualities in emmerdale.

Aww I love Gail I think Helen Worth is a lovely actress ^_^ Sally has to be my favourite too I think along with Liz McDonald

I cant stand Liz McDonald either she is just a desperate trollop in my opinion but i think on the whole she is quite a popular charactor among corrie fans.

I do agree about soap stars leaving thinking the world is their oyster which in reality less than 5% usually have a career after a soap, i remember the guy who plays steve mcdonald saying in an interview one time when he was asked if he would leave corrie he said no way as it would be career and financial suicide and i remember thinking fair play to you for realising where your bread is buttered.

I od understand why some leave as they want a new challenge which we all often do in our own normal jobs, but Shane Richie was a guy who i never understood why he left eastenders, now dont get me wrong im not a big fan of his charactor alfie at all but shane was bankrupt and joining eastenders saved him career wise and financially but once he got on his feet again he went off and made the same mistakes all over again and now he is back, will he ever learn i do wonder.

In fairness to Shane he was at EE a good while and he was at the centre of so many storylines - he must have been filming practically non-stop during his time there. Many an actor who plays a major character in a soap is over-worked. Sure, they get big pay, but fairly often they just want to be able to spend time with family and friends again!
