Betty Driver has reportedly revealed that she intends to retire at the end of the year.

The Coronation Street stalwart, who turns 90 in 11 days, said she wants to end her long-running role as Weatherfield's Betty Williams on a high by taking a large part in the soap's 50th anniversary celebrations.

According to the News Of The World, Driver told a friend: "If my health holds up I want to get through this year and take a big part in the anniversary celebrations. Then my plans are to put my feet up and have a long overdue rest."

Driver's 41 years with the soap were recognised with a 'Lifetime Achievement' gong at last night's British Soap Awards. In a recorded video message, she said: "I'm not very good at making speeches but I want to thank everyone at ITV."

Don't see how people can say they'll miss her tbh she's barely in it enough atm to be missed.

Whenever she has been in it (very) recently ... the writers have been kind enough to give her something sharp and witty to say - however it has only been very brief. Before Blanche re-emerged into the street Betty did deliver some of the pub-scenes best lines - but I think, over time, they've devoted the best lines to Blanche. Over the last 15 years or so however, she has been confined to 'do you want pickled red-cabbage or beetroot with your hotpot'.

You're right though ... because she has been in it so seldom recently ... she won't be missed. I must admit ... whenever she's on screen though ... I marvel at how bloody good Betty Driver looks for a woman approaching 90! She looks at least 10 years younger than June Brown from Eastenders.

 god I think it's impossible to look older than June Brown, don't think Betty's a smoker though is she? Not sure.

all cast should be sacked especially that grahame one he is not funny

This is why you can never bank on humour. You think Grahem is not funny - I find him hilarious and lovable. Dot Cotton from EE on the other hand - everyone on the EE forum think she's hilarious - I've never laughed at her once (don't find her a particularly good at pathos either ... Grahem is.)

Looks like Betty isn't leaving after all.

Corrie will be getting new titles as the show goes HD from May 31st.

I saw a bit of coronation street a minute ago when my mum was watching it.

In the latest episode did Gail say "Depression killed my husband" or "The Recession killed my husband"?

I thought it sounded like the latter but I'm not sure now

I'm not watching right now so can't be sure lol.

But both played a part so I couldn't even guess! :kink:

She said "I didn't kill my husband, the recession did" and you saw Tracey holding in laughter on the top bunk. Was hilarious.

The reading of the will was hilarious. I loved the little 'conditions' on Ken's bequest.

Just seen that now, couldn't stop laughing

Week beginning May 31st is a big one - 9pm episodes and the most expensive episodes ever on the Friday.

Week features Gails trail and of course Tony's escape and revenge.

Also it goes HD.

Monday 31st - 7pm & 9pm

Tuesday 1st - 9pm

Wednesday 2nd - 9pm

Thursday 3rd - 9pm

Friday 4th - 9pm

Episodes will be sandwhiched between the Britains Got Talent live shows and results.

I thought tonight's episode was a bit meh! .... apart from one bit ... the look between Graeme and Tina ... it was almost as good as the 'near close encounter' between Alex and Gene Hunt in Ashes To Ashes penultimate episode!

I can't believe that someone like Nick wouldn't have £300 in ready cash! Why would he need to even contemplate raiding Underworld's safe?
