Gavin Ryan's Chart Commentary

(Thanks to Gavin Ryan)

A new No.1 single this week, and only the second for this decade, from

artist Iyaz and his debut single "Replay" (DL: 2 to 1), which climbs a spot

to claim the top spot from the five week run of Owl City and their now No.2

track "Fireflies" (DL: 1 to 2). Also swapping places are numbers three and

five, with the Mumford & Sons track "Little Lion Man" (DL: 4 to 3) climbing

up two places to a new peak of No.3, and the former chart-topping single by

Ke$ha "Tik Tok" (DL: 3 to 5, Phys: 3 to 2) falls down two spots to No.5. In

amongst all of those swap-arounds, Ke$ha's "Blah Blah Blah" (DL: 6 to 4) is

at No.4 for a third week, in its fourth week in the charts.

"Bad Romance" (DL: 9 to 12, Phys: 10 hold) by Lady GaGa climbs back up

one spot to No.6, swapping places with Jason DeRulo's "Whatcha Say" (DL: 5

to 6) which falls a place to No.7. The only other track that holds place in

the Top 10 this week is Jay-Z and Alicia Keys on "Empire State of Mind" (DL:

7 to 8), and two tracks climb into the Top 10. Up five places to No.9 is

David Guetta's third Top 10 single, teamed with Kid Cudi on "Memories" (DL:

14 to 7), and scoring his second successive Top 10 single is Jay Sean

featuring Sean Paul (Sean Paul hasn't been in the Top 10 since June 2006

with "Temperature") with the track "Do You Remember?" (DL: 13 to 11), which

climbs two places up the charts to No.10.

NEW PEAKS: Muse look poised to score their first Top 10 single next week, as

"Undisclosed Desires" (DL: 12 to 9) climbs a few places to No.11. The Temper

Trap peaked at No.16 a week after the ARIA Awards last November, but this

week they climb to a new peak of No.14 with their track "Sweet Disposition"

(DL: 18 to 14), and the third new Top 20 peak is Timbaland and Nelly

Furtado's "Morning After Dark" (DL: 26 to 19) which is up eight places to

No.19.

Rihanna jumps up twenty-two places from last weeks debut of No.45 to No.23

this week with her new track "Rude Boy" (DL: 39 to 21). After a little

back-step last week, Richard Vission and his dance track "I Like That" (DL:

37 to 33) is up ten places to No.27 this week. The Art vs. Science EP

featuring the lead track "Parlez Vous Francais?" (Phys: 6 to 3) is up four

places to No.32, and current tourist's Mumford & Son score their second Top

40 entry by leaping up twenty-nine places to No.33 with their second single

"The Cave" (DL: 32 debut).

Calvin Harris scored the highest new entry last week, and that track

"Flashback" (DL: 36 to 38) is up to a new peak of No.38. Climbing eight

places to No.40 is Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zero's and their track

"Home" (DL: 44 to 40), and right behind them at No.41 is the new Top 10

entrant Kid Cudi, who is up fifteen places to No.41 with his latest track

"Pursuit of Happiness". Other Top 50 entrants this week also include Passion

Pit and their track "Little Secrets" at No.48 and Cascada and their latest

track "Fever" which is in at No.50.

Justin Bieber is sitting at No.30 for a third week with his first single

"One Time" (DL: 32 to 31), but he also debuts at No.37 with his new track

"Baby" (DL: 37 debut), featuring guest vocals from Ludacris. Both tracks are

from his "My World" album which recently hit No.79 on the album charts.

Below Top 50:

Florence + the Machine score the biggest and third biggest climbing singles

of the week, both of which are hitting new peaks below the Top 50 this week.

Current single "You've Got the Love" is up thirty-seven places to No.57, and

their first charting single from March 2009 "Dog Days" is up twenty-seven

places to a new peak of No.69 (formerly No.83 peak). John Mayer climbs five

places to a new peak of No.61 with his latest track "Heartbreak Warfare" and

The Temper Trap score two new peaking tracks this week, as older single

"Fader" is up to a new peak of No.82.

Lil' Wayne score his eighth ARIA Chart appearance, but only his third

lead vocalist track by debuting at No.56 with "Drop the World" featuring

guest vocals from Eminem, which they performed together at last weeks Grammy

Awards. Lil' Wayne's pervious solo efforts have been "Lollipop" (HP-32, June

2008) and "Prom Queen" (HP-93, March 2009). This new track is taken from the

album "Rebirth" which is released this week.

Canadian hip hop artist k-os debuts at No.71 with his eighteenth single

(first ARIA Chart appearance though) "I Wish I Knew Natalie Portman (Can't

Really Make You Love Me)". Born Kevin Brereton in 1972, he first released

tracks in 1993, and his first album in 2002. His fourth album "Yes!"

features this track, which has a sample from the track "California" by

Phantom Planet (2002), which they re-recorded as "California 2005" and was

played in the second episode for the third series of the TV series 'The OC'.

The fourth and final new entry for the week is the fifth charting single

for local singer/actress/TV host Natalie Bassingthwaighte entitled "Love

Like This". The track is being used by the GLBT Community to help promote

same-sex marriage in Australia, and enters at No.88, whilst Natalie was back

on TV screens this week as the host for the third series of So You Think You

Can Do, of which the new soundtrack is released next week.

Lady GaGa holds for 76th week in the charts at No.93 with "Just Dance",

now tying it for second place as 'Longest Charting Single 1988-2010', and

will most probably surpass Justin Timberlake's 79 weeks for "SexyBack", as

Lady GaGa's tour in March will not doubt keep her singles charting longer.

For the eleventh week in a row, Susan Boyle holds at the No.1 position

with her album "I Dreamed a Dream". Australia is the only country to have

held it a No.1 for this long, with New Zealand having had it at the top of

their charts for nine weeks. The album also ties with the 2001 "Moulin

Rouge" Soundtrack for being the 'Longest Consecutive Run at No.1' for this

decade, so if she retains the top spot for a twelfth week, Susan's album

will be longest consecutive run at the top this century (but not the longest

overall {yet}).

Unlike the singles chart, the Top 5 is very stable, with only two albums

swapping places. Mumford and Sons hold at No.2 with their "Sign No More"

album and Ke$ha is at No.5 again with her debut album "Animal". The two

albums that swap are No.3 and No.4, with Lady GaGa's "The Fame Monster" up

one place to No.3 and Michael Buble's "Crazy Love" down a spot to No.4. Muse

climb two places to No.6 with "The Resistance", and Grammy winner and

current tourist (she started in Brisbane on February 4th) Taylor Swift jumps

back up five places to No.7 with her "Fearless" album. The McClymonts are

down two places to No.8 with their second album "Wrapped Up Good", "The

E.N.D." by The Black Eyed Peas is holding at No.9, and down three places to

No.10 is Vampire Weekend with "Contra".

Florence + The Machine finished their national tour as a part of the

Laneway Festival in Perth on Saturday, which has helped their former UK No.1

album "Lungs" to climb to a new peak of No.12 this week. Owl City might have

fallen to No.2 with their former No.1 single "Fireflies", but their album

"Ocean Eyes" does the opposite and climbs one place to a new peak at No.14.

Other albums making new peaks include the soundtrack for "Bran Nue Dae" up

to No.29, and English indie band The XX, and their self-titled critically

acclaimed album which jumps up fifty-four places to No.40.

Groove Armada's seventh studio album (17th including compilations)

"Black Light" is the highest new entry of the week, coming in at No.17. Rob

Zombie's fourth solo album entitled "Hellbilly Deluxe II" debuts at No.23,

the original edition peaked at No.37 in late September in 1998. And the

fourth album for Electro British group Hot Chip called "One Life Stand"

debuts at No.27, who debuted exactly two years ago this week with their

third album "Made in the Dark", which entered and peaked at No.25.

Other new albums that enter this week come from LostProphets and "The

Betrayed" at No.49. Midlake debut at No.61 with "The Courage of Others", and

Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros debut at No.86 with their first

full-length album "Up From Below".

WOW big jump for 'Rude Boy' can u imagine what peak it'll get once the vid is released  :yahoo: and great for Cascada 'Fever' hope it peaks higher  x

Was hoping M&S would overtake Susan this week. :( Hopefully they still have a chance next week. Great to see Little Lion Man reach a new peak and The Cave enter though. And :o at Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros actually charting there.

Also, great for Florence's album! I'm loving the Oz charts much more than the UK one atm.

I'm surprised Timbaland feat. Katy Perry hasn't appeared in the Australian chart yet. Is their track getting released in Australia or will they be getting Timbaland feat. Justin Timberlake 'Carry Out' instead?
