The holder of this accolade was probably Journey with Don't Stop Believin' unless I'm mistaken, but obviously that recently broke the top 40 for the first time, so who holds the record now?

I ask this question because I notice Drake/Kanye West/Lil Wayne/Eminem - Forever has been in the top 75 for 9 weeks, 6 of those in the top 50, but peaked at #42. It's also climbed back up 3 to #51 this week. If it keeps going at this rate, it could surely take that record?

I'm sure there is, probably some old 'classic' song that missed the top 40, a la Journey (but that hasn't reached top 40 yet)

But I can't currently think of one :P

Did Goo Goo Dolls - Iris reach top 40? That's been around 120 in itunes for a very very long time now, maybe a few years even. And it's 12 years old, so must have high sales.

I'm sure Iris went top 30...

Eva Cassidy's Somewhere Over The Rainbow hung around for ages without going top 40 but there's probably something a lot older that holds the record

EDIT: Or not

I got it mixed up with 'Back To Black', but that reached top 40 :P

I'm thinking of 'Somewhere Over The Rainbow' by Israel Kamakawiwo'ole.

Yes, I think it did. Well..it's not that then.

Iris went to #26 with the 1999 re-release, and #39 in 2006 credited as 'Stay With You/Iris' for some reason. It did original only make #50 though...

Probably spot on with Over The Rainbow actually - Eva's version was #42 and Iz's #46. It's probably one of those.

I would guess it would be this standard?

It never reached the Top 40; but has become a pub standard since; and certainly spent a lot of time in the lower reaches of the iTunes Top 300 up until the middle of 2008 as people added it to their iPods.

That's the one I was going to say, but I couldn't remember his name! That one seems to linger around iTunes as well.

As already suggested, it's probably another one of those classics that never did as well as you expected.

I would have nominated "Shame" by Evelyn "Champagne" King from 1978 but I see that made no. 39. (spent 23 weeks in the top 75)
